Panic Braking, Do You Use the Clutch? | Motorcycle Training Concepts
Hello everyone, welcome to another edition of Nick's friction Zone. In this video I would like to touch on a controversial topic in the motorcycle community.
Let's say, you are in situation where you are riding down the street, and for unforeseen circumstances, you need to perform emergency or panic braking to stop your bike as soon as possible. When that happens, in addition to use your brakes, will you pull the clutch to downshift? Or will you just ignore the clutch and focus on braking? Which technique will give you the best chance of avoiding or surviving a head on collision? What about downshifting? How much does engine braking really help you? Is it just a myth?
As we discuss this topic, I welcome the motorcycle community to share your experiences and preferred technique. Not every bike is the same. Not every rider is the same. Not every environment is the same. You could live in a metropolitan urban environment. Maybe you are lucky to live and ride in a quite rural neighborhood. Are you a weekend warrior? Are you a commuter? Let's talk and share our perspectives to the rest of the community.

Had a few really scary moments on my cruisers. A big factor is "panic." If a car has just pulled out in front of me and I'm cool and rational - progressive braking beginning with the rear to jeep from overloading the front wheel grip. Second, progressive application of front brake also once I felt the rear end squat a bit. Meanwhile, left hand and foot are downshifting to get engine braking in it also. I'm also looking for an escape slot ahead of me if I can swerve to miss the other vehicle. If I'm totally freaked out (it has happened a couple of times), I have defaulted to my early training and just let off the throttle (good) , squeezed the clutch lever without a downshift (bad - no help from engine braking), and clamped front and rear brakes until the bike starts to skid (I have no ABS now). I have seen videos of people about to wreck where they instinctively put their feet down as the bike is about to crash. At least I haven't freaked out that badly. Took the Basic Rider Course and the MSF Advanced Rider Course also. Great training to have.

Panic breaking (also known as "ho shit breaking") is just too late... Emergency breaking is not available on an Harley 😂

Kind of off topic but the AI video mixed up the braking numbers, 70% of your braking power comes from your front, 30% from your rear. NOT, you should only pull the level those percentages. Progressive braking is the way, preload the brake.

ha! u r right! That was a confusing AI generated video!

On the topic emergency braking i wouldnt pull the clutch sense the engine braking would help you slow down faster. If this is coming to a complete stop youd obviouly have to enngage the clutch at some point but if this is really an emergency you would want maximum stoping power.

I use engine breaking coming up a stop light or stop sign and barely using my brakes. However, when you really hit the brakes, you're slowing the bike much quicker than any engine braking I have ever experienced. I pull the clutch instinctively when emergency braking so I can downshift and be ready to apply power to swerve or take other evasive action if needed. If you slow down to 10 mph, but you're still in 6th gear... it's going to be difficult to make that subsequent move if needed. Keep the shiny side up.

@@jshumphress13 I also pull the clutch "instinctively". I also heard from other bikers, that in moments of desperation, you could forget to unroll the throttle. I'm just being honest here, "Everyone has a plan until u get hit in the face"

Clutch shall be applied at the very end of the stop of braking giving most of engine breaking and front plus rear brake efficiency

Well, if I'm in the scenario of that AI vid, all I'm thinking is that I'm done for. How much braking power would engine braking add there, given the short distance? From driving a manual car, I'm more used to using mostly the brakes in emergencies and forgoing engine braking.

Yo, seasoned motorcycle riders, share your wisdom on this subject. Do you pull the clutch right away or do you use engine braking? Let's chop it up and figure out what the best, safest strategy is. Ride Safe 🏍

You have bad audio, I wanted to hear what you had to say but the volume is so low that I just decided not to. This is by no means a jab. Just something you can improve on. You need to have the volume for speech set higher than other sounds.

yo, i appreciate the feedback and apologize for the bad audio. As you may tell, this is not a professional YT channel. Really only posting these videos because I have a strange love for motorcycling. Stay Safe!!

@@NicksFrictionZone It's objectively too low. I can move back and forth between this video and any other video/audio and notice the vast difference. I can also look at the audio levels on my PC.

Recently was in a situation like in the video and here are my observations. As a backstory I had been in similar positions and were to tell my friends how I was able to mitigate the situations but this time I took a overside fall and rolled couple of times. So what happened is a animal crossed the road and I had literally no time to react to plan or think. Generally I would stay calm in the last couple of seconds and what I do in that time bailed me out of trouble. Not rhis time. What I want to summarise is... don't assume there is one good way to handle panic situations. What I realised is there are levels to this game and no matter in what level you are in now...there are levels above you.
