Panicle Hydrangeas Not Turning Pink? Two Reasons Why (Little Lime Punch Example)

Are you frustrated that your panicle hydrangeas are not turning pink, but instead are turning from white or lime green directly to brown? I was too, until I realized the two main reasons why. One reason is in our control and the other reason is not. I use my Little Lime Punch Hydrangea as my example of what went wrong (last year) and right this year. Thank you for this video. I’ve had my Bobo for about 5 years and I’ve never seen pink, just brown and although I’m still in love with Bobo I’ve been disappointed with them not giving a spectacular color show through the temp changes. Now I understand that I haven’t been doing my best with watering since I felt they were established. In GA our Summers are now brutal instead of the gorgeous GA summers we were used to. So I need to adjust my habits. Fingers crossed this year will be different.

You're welcome! 😀 I hear you about the Summers were were used to . . . as we never used to have such brutal hot and humid Summers in this region either. 🥵 What also makes the pink color difficult in achieving is when our night temperatures don't get low enough, as panicle hydrangeas -- like Bobo -- also need those cooler night temps in order to help them change color. That's why many of us in the hotter Summers don't get to enjoy our pink colors until very late Summer and early Fall . . . whereas our neighbors in Northern climates get to enjoy the pink color sooner. I've got my fingers crossed for you too, for this year! 🤞 Please keep me posted! 🌸

Jenny from Gardening with Creekside Zone 7b (professional garden growers) pretty much has resolved herself to the fact that she won't be seeing the fabulous pink/red vibrant hydrangea tones that Northern Zones experience. This year for whatever reason I am seeing more pink hues on my hydrangeas in Zone 7a. I will take your suggestion and up my watering game.😊

Same here in Georgia ... everything happening later due to the extreme heat. We've had one storm after another so they're getting plenty of water. And for me, I do storm clean up over and over and over. On the upside though, I get to dream up new projects for fall and winter :) Everything is looking so beautiful, Laura!

Great vid. I have a strawberry sundae first full year, 10 days ago it was just turning pink then went away on a trip and came back and now they’re green….argh! I will be patient for next year. Didn’t know how to tell if I’ve been overwatering so thanks for that. I did learn a tip from Overdevest nurseries to cut the branch tips in early summer and let them grow back, that way, you can time it for cool nights. I don7have the guts to do this yet.

Wow -- they went from almost pink to green? That's interesting Karen! But this has indeed been a wacky Summer weather-wise! Plus, the plants we buy from a nursery have been fertilized and treated and are on a specific schedule. I think next year will be the first year to begin to learn how and when your own strawberry sundae will bloom, once the plant has acclimated to your own soil and climate. 👍 That's quite a tip from Overdevest -- oh how I love them -- but I wouldn't have the guts to do that either. 🤣 As it is, most of mine don't begin blooming until mid-July . . . I can't imagine waiting even longer to see any flowers! Thanks for sharing that tip! 💕

Great idea! As soon as this current heat wave lets up, I’m hoping to show these again. Today’s heat index was 104 degrees with dew point in the 70s. 🥵 I’m melting out there! 🤣

@@GardenSanity I know, it's so hot here in Ontario Canada as well for the past few days. My hydrangeas were looking great as the weather seemed to cool off in the evening, and now this blast of heat got them looking not so good. "Fire light" and "love a lot pink" hydrangeas. All we can do is just water them.

Thanks John! Yes, I think we got a glimpse of cooler night temperatures here in southern NJ last weekend, but nothing “regular” just yet. However, my fingers are crossed! How big is your Vanilla Strawberry? I think they are so pretty!

Good points, Laura! The Quickfire standard I left by the deck has turned totally pink. The one I moved to the woods, totally white. That one has to compete for water and is still settling in. Your garden looks great! No such thing as too many hydrangeas!

I’m a newby as far as paniculatas are concerned and bought two at the end of the summer last year. I live in southern Greece and fellow gardeners thought they wouldn’t survive. I’m happy to say they have bloomed beautifully but our summer has been particularly brutal this year with temperatures of 40 degrees +. A couple of panicles have scorched but the others have turned green and no pink or red in sight. I water them every evening as they’re in pots they do dry out of course but they’re still damp when it comes time to water. So do you think that it’s more a case of the high temperature? Overnight it didn’t drop below 34-35 degrees for a couple of weeks. They seem to like the spot they’re in, sheltered by a tall shrub until about 2pm then pretty much full sun. I’d appreciate any advice please. I do love their big blowsy blooms ❤

Hi Sally, I remember you previously mentioning your paniculatas - one is a Limelight if I remember correctly? Yes, I do think it’s the heat where you are - most definitely. It sounds like you are doing everything right and they are happy. I know last year I had you cut the flowers off so they could focus on growing stronger stems, so this year will be the first year to see how the color change happens. My guess is any color change will occur once your nighttime temps cool down, as long as the hydrangeas continue to get water like you’ve been providing. Which types of paniculata hydrangeas do you have?

Yes, hot humid nights are the sole reason pannicles don't turn color. I'm in 8b Florida, and I have tried several types of pannicles. All are well hydrated. Mine have never turned color. I don't know of anyone in my area who has pink pannicles in their garden. It simply doesn't happen here due to the heat. The extra watering that the video creator gave her hydrangea is not a factor. I suspect that she lives in an area with cooler nights and the lack of water last year contributed to dry flowers, and therefore, they didn't last long enough to turn pink. Anyway, I ripped them all out. Nothing attractive about brown flowes!

@@maryannferencak3799 Hi MaryAnn, yes it is very difficult to get the wonderful pink colors in your gardening zone. Your zone is just on the tip of where these hydrangeas won't do well. I don't live in an area with cooler nights -- although I wish I did!! -- as our Summers this year and last year have been horrendous and the temps stay very high at night. Hopefully we will begin getting some lower night temperatures in September. 🤞Water does indeed help, especially when the sun is so brutal because the sun quickly dries out the shallow roots that panicle hydrangeas have causing the flowers to dry out and turn brown. I hope this helps and that you found something to replace those brown flowers much more to your liking! 💮💕

I'm in zone 8b. Pannicles simply do not turn pink due to the high temps at night. The nurseries here even warn patrons that pannicles won't turn pink here. What I sometimes do is tip prune them in midsummer to postpone blooming until late September. That usually does the trick. I got rid of most of my pannicles, but have about 6 left. Also turning pink is not dependent on the amount of water provided. I suppose you could damage the flowers by withholding water, and then they wouldnt turn pink, but that would be a real stretch!

Greetings from TN! Is the same advice good for red slipper oakleaf hydrangea? Mine goes from light pink to brown. I never see the red fall color😢

Excellent question Anna! Not all oakleaf hydrangeas change flower color, but for those that do - like your Red Slipper - the same advice I gave here holds true. The watering is in your control, and cooler temperatures (and nights) will help the Red Slipper flower colors change to pink and hopefully a deep pink, with foliage turning a burgundy-ish color in the Fall. Do your leaves change color in the Fall?

@@annacole5023 I'm sorry the blooms are turning brown in July. At least you're getting the nice foliage color change -- trying to find a bright side for you! So yes, try to monitor the water on those extreme heat days -- but know that Mother Nature is so darn unpredictable. 😐 Here's hoping next year is a better season! 🤞💕

Is this the same for oakleaf hydrangea? I have some blooms that were ‘pinkening’ and now they are brown ☹️

Good question Heather! Not all oakleaf hydrangeas change flower color, but for those that do - the same advice I gave here holds true. The watering is in your control, and cooler temperatures (and nights) will help the flower colors change as well as the foliage. Again...depending on which Oakleaf hydrangea you have. 👍 Yes, the flowers going from pink to brown are somewhat out of your control...as we deal with Mother Nature and these very long days of hot temperatures. 🥵
