My Little Lime was a flop! A big flipping flop! I ended up hard pruning her right after she bloomed last year to give it time to grow more sturdy stems and then gave her a light trim this Spring. The stems look much stronger now... I ended up with a load of hydrangeas in vases and made a few wreaths so all was not lost. I'm looking forward to seeing the beautiful show all of my hydrangeas will put on this year. Great detailed video, Laura!

Thank you so much!! There aren't a lot of good video's out there explaining everything you have. We had landscaping done 4 years ago and I told them I have NO experience and don't intend on having any with gardens so put in easy to care for stuff. They didn't tell me how to prune anything and ended up putting in whatever they wanted. I am slowly getting the hang of it but these one were the trickiest to me. Now I can go outside and confidently prune my Little Lime. 😀

In my Pinky Winky pruning video -- another panicle hydrangea -- I mentioned there are gardeners who don't prune their Pinky Winkies... but for better branching, no worries about crossing branches, and a healthier shrub overall, pruning is recommended. Great video. I have a 6 yo little limelight that has lost some center branches and only has 6 live stems that stretch out to periphery. I have yet to see any new growth from base of plant. I did prune the tree that was shading it so hoping this year it does better. I am hoping I don’t have to replace it with a new one. Any ideas to try and encourage growth from base or is it a lost cause after 6 years in zone 5a? Thanks!
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity Год назад
Hi Shane - I don’t think your Little Lime is a lost cause. How do the leaves look now, as I imagine they are leafing out? I think with more sun it will do better. Many plants got hit with the deep freeze(s) we all experienced this Winter, and it’s possible your shrub got hit with that. Pruning does encourage the shrub to push out new growth, so even trimming the existing stems will help the shrub. If you haven’t yet pruned it, I’d say you can go ahead and trim those stems back more toward the main part of the shrub, to a set of leaves. (In other words, take those long stems and trim them each back toward the center of the shrub.) This will help the shrub be a bit fuller rather than have it’s growth going out to the periphery like you described. Apply Holly-tone by Espoma around the shrub and work it into the soil a bit. Water it in or let Mother Nature water it in. Hope this helps! 🌱

@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 2 года назад
Is there any chance you could plant the pot into the ground temporarily for the Winter? Doing so would help insulate the pot and roots, helping the plant survive until it gets a permanent home in your landscape. That’s my best suggestion, and what I’ve personally done in the past with plants (still in their pots) I needed to over-Winter. And yes, occasional water like you suggest is a great idea! ❄️

I’m back with a new dilemma! Lol. My little limes are growing taller and seem to have sturdier branches this year (YAY!) however there are not many buds on them this year as there were last year at this time. I used plant tone slow release fertilizer in the spring but am thinking maybe I need one with more phos? Do you think I can fertilize again now with higher phos to get them to bud or is it too late and just wait until next spring?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 2 года назад
Hi Kerry - hooray for the sturdier and taller branches! 👍 Are you talking about flower buds - or - leaf node buds coming out from the branches and stems? 🤔 It’s possible the Little Limes are a bit behind this year in developing new flower buds, so I wouldn’t worry just yet. Panicle hydrangeas (including Little Limes) love acid soil, so use Holly-tone instead of Plant-tone. You can work some Holly-tone into the soil now and be patient - which I know isn’t easy! 😀 It’s possible the Spring temperatures can impact the growing season, and I hope that’s all it is for you. I’ve got small flower buds on my newer Little Limes on one side of my front yard, but not any flower buds yet on my older Little Limes on the other side of the front yard. 🙃🙂

Proven Winners recommend to use rose tone for panicle hydrangeas. I also know people who use bloom booster up to panicles are fully opened, and they are huge. Hope that will help.

Can you control the size of a little lime punch? I just bought 4 and have 2 beds about 9 feet wide. and I planted a qty 3x ( 3 feet apart) Center to center for a bordered look. Getting told it’s overcrowded and need to relocate?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 6 дней назад
Hi Carolyn, I don't think that's overcrowded at all, actually! 👍 Little Lime Punch will grow between 3 to 5 feet tall AND wide. And that means that they may stay at 3 feet tall and wide or they "could" eventually grow a bit taller "up to" 5 feet tall and wide. What it doesn't mean is that it "will" grow to a specific height and/or width. So using the height/width as guidelines helps us plan for a garden space but it isn't a hard-and-fast rule. I'm unsure why you were told it is overcrowded because each "side" (if you will) of the Little Lime Punch will grow a minimum of 1.5 feet wide from the center outward. And if two plants are growing towards each other 1.5 feet that equals a nice 3 feet, exactly as you described with branches just touching each other! And if they grow more than that, well then you've got yourself a gorgeous hedge that I'll be quite jealous of! 😀 My own Little Lime Hyrangeas - which also have the 3 feet up to 5 feet tall and wide guidelines - all grow wonderfully together and look like a small hedge (as there are only 3 of them together) and I love the look. Not overcrowded at all! And to answer about controlling size: you can always clip a branch here or there during the Summer if you feel the flowers are too close to each other. However, I bet you'll leave them because of how gorgeous they will look! I hope this puts your mind at ease! ❤️

No worries Kim: you will have new growth, new stems and beautiful flowers next year! You did the right thing by cutting the stem back. Limelights are tough shrubs, so it isn’t ruined at all. And pruning when you do is perfect! 🌱

Great video! What month would be considered late Winter in Michigan?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 2 года назад
Thanks so much Joan! With the way all of us across the country experienced such a whacky Winter last year -- yours is a great question! With Little Lime Hydrangeas, my best suggestion is to look and see if the buds are forming. Depending on our individual gardening zones, this timing can vary. But when you begin to see those buds, you can prune your Little Limes -- and your other panicle hydrangeas for that matter. Once you get used to see what the buds look like, you'll begin to know what to watch for, and -- unless we have more crazy weather -- you'll begin to learn when is a good pruning time in your area. For example, I usually like to prune in mid-March, but last year I pruned them one month later than usual. Our mid-March was still late Winter in terms of the temperatures and how hard the ground still was, and it would have been ok had I pruned them in mid-March. The good news is that panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood. So whether you prune them in late Winter or early Spring, they will still continue to grow and will flower wonderfully for you! I hope this helps?

I planted a limelight tree last spring and it bloomed beautifully all summer. I didn't realize that it will get very tall, and I want to try to keep it small. How do I do that?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity 2 года назад
Hi Jim, I have a great video about pruning a Limelight Hydrangea Tree that will show you how I prune my tree. Most years I let it grow huge, but last year I pruned it back quite a bit, and it came back well. As long as you leave at least 1/3 of the stems on the tree after pruning, you can keep it to a height and width you want. All the growth happens in one season. So if you see how far back I pruned my tree in early Spring -- and then see how much it grew and flowered in later videos from last Summer and Fall -- it's amazing how much it does grow! And remember to only prune it once a year in early Spring, so you don't accidentally remove the flowers which will grow on the ends of each stem. I hope the videos help. Please keep me posted!

My question is can I prune the drooping branches now?
@GardenSanity
@GardenSanity Год назад
Hi Joan, How old -- or young -- is your Little Lime Hydrangea? Sometimes in the first few years -- as the main stems are still developing -- the branches can be prone to flopping when the flowers are weighed down after rainstorms. (It's amazing how much water each flowerhead holds!) If you'd like to send me a photo or two, you can email them to me at petscribbles@gmail.com and I can take a closer look for you. 🙂
