Well think of it like this...In ancient greece they didn't just do it for an Olympic pussy sport...this was how they would fight if they lost their weapon in battle so yes it was way more brutal because they had intention to kill
lord777terror From Hercules.Pankration is associated with the ancient Greek tradition ma friend, like the fight between Hercules and the lion of Nemea,Theseus with Minotauros, Aianta with Odysseus. It exists as a martial art from 8th century B.C. The name originates from the words PAN+KRATEIN(Πάν+Κραττείν) which means HOLDS THE DOMINATE POWER.
yea but who taught the greeks the greeks were learned and taught by the africans in ancient kemet and they were doing hand to hand combat ground fighting graples and throws long before the greeks in fact the greek gods zeus and apollo were ethiopian unless HOMER is a liar
I dont think so that Greeks learned this art from Africans..cause they are sources refered to Pankration 3000 years ago.. It was the first to combine striking, grappling and submission techniques, making it the ancestor of modern mixed martial arts. Also Apollon and Zeus werent Ethiopian, but Hellenic(Greek). And Homeros was not a liar but a lot of sources are...search better next time my friend...
@@aluisiofsjr "maiandros" throughout the uniform lines, the Gi is a modern way of having a uniform on for catching/grappling/throwing, nothing wrong with it
Pankration was my introduction to grappling. Started this when I was training in hapkido. Started BJJ a few weeks later. Unfortunately I only got to do around a year of pankration. This shit is the real deal. Only time I've ever had a knee injury, when I copped a kneebar from this Thai dude.
Boxing didn’t start in Greece - drawings have shown boxing in Egypt before Greece. Neither did Greco-Roman wrestling start in Ancient Greece. Greco is actually fairly new and the name was given as a homage to Ancient Greek culture.
Wrestling and boxing where invented from the first human to live...it's like sayign before we discovered gravity people used to float....it's the rules and the sport that countries gave but fist fighting and wrestling existed because that's how every human on this planet fights
If Pankration gets back into the olympics as Khabib intends I hope they don't use a gi. It doesn't make sense. Pankration wasn't origionally fought using an gi and neither is mma
So you want them naked ?...I agree tho maybe some mma shorts would do just fine...but just letting you know they fought naked in ancient Greece so I don't think you want that
@@sir2657 I think a swimming bodysuit or wrestling rash guard sort of clothes would be best, best to avoid nasty skin infections like tinea gladiatorum or wrestler's ringworm plus slippery like the original oil of the naked pankration.
Might want to look up modern pankration history........Pankration DIED OUT thousands of years ago and modern Pankration is a recreation from the 1970s from Jim arvintis who used Judo, jujutsu, muay thai, boxing and wrestling to create MODERN pankration.........it has no connections to the ancient one. lmao
@@lowrhyan567 that's why you don't have an effective rebuttal to my take, right? these two dudes would be lunch for any half-competent Muay Thai practitioner, let alone anyone who trains MMA.
This looks more like a random mishmash of modern martial arts like kyuokushin karate and jiu-jitsu, with some weird arbitrary rules, nothing to do with pankration other than the name.
This is Pankration in name only. We can't practice real Pankration as it was practiced in ancient Greece today, because they left no manuals. We can only guess what it was like based on some paintings. Not enough to revive real Pankration. MMA has nothing to do with Prankation by the way. Yes, there are similarities in concept. But MMA didn't come from Pankration and was not inspired by it at all. MMA as we know it today came from Brazilian Vale-Tudo. MMA started from the UFC and the first UFCs were basically Brazilian Vale-Tudo competitions set in the U.S. So MMA is a direct decedent from Brazilian Vale-Tudo.
We can say that Brazilian Vale Tudo is one of the precursors of MMA. But to make it real MMA, as it is today, there has to be a set of rules. Vale tudo, which is basically a no-holds barred style vs style match has little to no rules. The Japanese Shooto has a lot to do with what modern MMA has today(including the rules) MORE THAN the vale tudo. Shooto competition started since mid 80s and there are pre-1993 footage here in youtube(thats years ahead than the UFC).
Hmmm that is interesting, there is just one problem. Do you think that the idea of using many techniques from various fighting styles was independently arrived at by the vale tudo inventor(s)? Something tells me not very likely. The point being that the first in history to have utilized multiple fighting styles in one sport were the Greeks. The knowledge of this was not lost to history, seeing as we know about it today. So this means that it's possible that Vale Tudo and all attempts to infuse many fighting styles into one sport were inspired by the first who ever did this the ancient Greeks with Pankration. Of course we can't know for sure as we would have to speak to the guy who invented this and he's probably long dead by now.
I like these rules it's like a mix of Enshin Karate and Kosen Judo. I can't seem to find more like this? Other Panration fights I've seen, have head punches and they're wearing headgear, shorts and even boxing gloves.
The modern "Pankration" is a "light" version of the actual ancient one! In ancient "Pankration", you could do WHATEVER you like to defeat your opponent - boxing, kicking, wrestling, taking eyes off (!!!), chocking him to the death (!!!), breaking his fingers, whatever!!!! Very few defeated athlets in ancient "Pankration" were ...survived - most were dead after the match! (There were NO rules... NO TIMING - rounds... you simply was fighting for YOUR LIFE!)
Eye gouging was actually one of the few things that were illegal in ancient pankration and while to the death was encouraged a knockout or yield also ended a matched
This aint pankration, this looks like Judo with some striking allowed. Pankration was an almost everything goes sport that allowed everything except eye gauging and biting. Also fighters were naked.
within 4 seconds the announcer was like "no hits to the head" this is not Pankration. that sport had no holds barred and allowed eye gouging and all sorts of bs.
Because it is , pankration is long dead and even if it was alive nowadays (which it is it's called mma) most of its techniques would look like techniques used in mma since most mma techniques are simple , effective and efficient.
Xenikogiannis MMA isn't pankration. Pankration was dead and discontinued martial art. The people who brought it back are actually kickboxers and fighters from other martial arts who recreated this. Seriously you think these karate style point and clothes aren't enough clues? Pankration maybe older but now they are looking at other martial arts to be back
The West and Ukraine gets offended and correct others over "the Ukraine " when all they are doing is just being political , politically correct . As a part of Ukraine's self made national identity . Particularly modern Ukraine . Not saying it doesn't have its own national identity exactly just that they are pushing these stuff too much . Any way let's focus on the ancient sport of pankration which is what this is about .
