Contaminated Blood: The Search for the Truth - BBC Panorama
It has been called the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS. More than 2,400 people died and thousands more were infected with HIV and Hepatitis C after being treated with contaminated blood products. All the victims were infected over 25 years ago, but even now new cases are still being diagnosed. Survivors and their families are trying once more to persuade the government to hold a UK public inquiry.
Panorama examines recently released documents, and asks if the government could have done more to save lives. The film hears the heartbreaking testimony of some of the victims and their families and explores the dilemmas of doctors who had to carry on treating their patients through the unfolding crisis.

My cousin, John Leone, was using Factor 8 in the 1970's. He died of AIDS in 1989. He was a husband, father, and a brilliant jazz pianist.

I sympathize with Sarah, my husband was eventually diagnosed with terminal cancer, during which time he had been fobbed off without even an X-ray or a scan. He spent the rest of his life I’ll from the chemo, it was a horrible death for a proud man, robbed of his dignity. No help from anyone other than my friends.

Factor concentrates had not become the main form of treatment at that stage and people had not began to die in numbers. In short, the scandal had not become apparent yet.

because no one knew in 1970 and aids wasn't around then, it was more mid-late 70s and they didn't know gays were giving contaminated blood until about 1982/3 and even then they were in denial.

Awful. Same happened here in the U.S. AIDS was discovered in '81; blood wasn't tested until 1985. While there wasn't an HIV test until '84, they knew that Hepatitis B was a common co-infection in HIV+ patients & chose NOT to screen blood products for this disease due to cost, laziness & political correctness. Countless died as a result. Read "And the Band Played On" by Randy Shilts for an amazing account of ALL the players who contributed to the modern AIDS epidemic. It's a very fair & balanced book. Edit: Holy crap! Didn't know y'all refused American blood donations. Good lord, that just drives home how shady our collection methods were. I had no idea you didn't pay donors over there. Wow. Today I learned.

It is the sheer amount of negligence, carelessness, and disregard for human lives that is so shocking. The fact that companies were using plasma from paid high-risk groups; that they were not disinfecting it; that no one in Europe questioned this; that 'we' even stuck to the procedure when Aids and Hep C. were discovered; that doctors were not informing guys about their infections, and that politicans tricked terminally ill people in signing unethical agreements. And so on, and so on. and so on ...

I don’t think it was a fair and balanced book, solely because of the demonisation of Gaetan Dugas. Shilts made him sound like he was a monster and serial killer. And Dugas couldn’t defend himself, he was dead. He’s been posthumously defended now. But for years he was seen as Patient Zero because of Shilts.

With respect, 3,500 British citizens were killed by the contaminated blood, purchased from the American State Factor 8 and the British government and NHS sidestepped their moral and legal liability=Factor 8.

In my country, Portugal, the same thing happened in the 80's - the conservative government at the time bought contaminated blood and then tried to sweep the scandal, the hemophilia case, under the rug. Many people died since and many more are suffering and yet justice has not been served. That's the bourgeois democracy at its best.

At the time I had set up a Sunshine's Place web page entirely dedicated to explaining Hemophilia. The reports from America to campaign for the 100 thousand dollar bill bill to be passed and this page was visited by all kinds of countries all over the world, especially many members from England. I once smuggled the DVD Factor 8, from America in my possession where prisoners sell their contaminated blood. manufacturers knew about it and kept it quiet!

As someone who lives in the US and was born right after AIDS was discovered, I am appalled and disgusted that this even happened. So sorry to all those who were affected by this disaster.

I live in the USA. My dad and uncles were/are all mild hemophiliacs. I also have it hemophilia and now my son. My dad got Hep C from the blood products. How heartbreaking to know so many were hurt by medication made to save them in the first place.

Treloars knew from the moment they put the boys on the trial, too many unrelated incidents happened with even the slightest amount of blood on any surface without knowing whose it was, I remember seeing the panicked expressions of the staff from around the last three months of 1983 onwards at the sight of the tiniest amount of blood anywhere.

With respect, it is necessary for a British Judge of the British Judiciary, to consider the facts of the British Blood Contamination case and to ajudicate the criminal liability of the British Government and the Heath provider, the NHS and to determine damages for the British citizen survivors and their families, with respect.

So if they were directly told about the risks of blood products and the limitations of testing at the time, would they choose to just forgo the treatment and just choose to die of hemophilia by 18? It takes ENORMOUS amounts of blood to make enough of these medications. I think people are kidding themselves if they think that they would have forgone treatment of lethal medical conditions. Thank god testing is greatly improved but even today there are risks. You always have to consider what the alternative is.

Except they had other treatment options like cryoprecipitate. Or heat treated factor 8. There were other options, but these people were never told of them. Not sure how you missed all this info, it’s in the video. Edit: want to add that most weren’t even told they could get HIV/HCV from factor 8 until AFTER they were told they were infected. HIV would have been in the blood supply in the 70’s, yet HIV was not even discovered until 1981. Even once it was discovered, these people were told nothing.

So sad. Iv hep c and don't know how I got it and I can't even get 8 pounds from personal independent I'm having to go to trybrunral to prove how ill I am and how it affects me . Like my medical records arnt good enough. What a joke. God bless you if your affected may you find peace in your life x

I also did research on hep c given to children at early age the syringe s used were glass and cleaned with hot water then used again on military men whom most had hep c this was in the 60s and 64 I'm a 1961 baby but thers no proof for me or how I go about finding out. Yes it makes you very untrustworthy about what they give you . All I know its reuend my life and having to fight for disability every few years is discussing the people who interview you have no medical background and just tick boxes I'm waiting now for my review to still see if I get disability .

This actually deserves to end the NHS. No compensation paid let alone criminal charges. People in the NHS told of the dangers in the 70s. Murder or manslaughter? When it's 2400 cases you deserve life in jail either way if you failed to act when you knew.

Factors are all the various molecules made by our bodies that float around inside our circulatory systems. Some are known to have vital purposes, like how Factor 8 plays a significant role in the chemical process that makes our blood clot when tissues are damaged. Others have been identified but we don't really know yet exactly what functions they perform.

Solution? If you know you may need a transfusion, self donate ahead of time. Have someone d&d free with your blood type and you can agree to donate for each other.

It's Not how it works...1 you need to look at it takes Many different people to make 1 'dose' of plasma, 2..you are talking about some of the most sick people that need blood to live that can't be donors themselves. 3. Cancer patients and many other illnesses require powerful medications, cortical steroids chemotherapy drugs that make donating blood unsafe and impossible. 4. If you're relatively healthy person if you ever suddenly need blood it'll probably be from an accident or you need multiple pints of blood, and your scenario no donor could give you that without dying themselves... real answer is making sure blood donation stays safe, ethical and Nonprofit. A minute it is monetized is when we have problems and we're seeing that also in the organ donation field like China using prisoner of conscience as live human organ harvesting vessels

Factor 8 is a killer and the British Government and the main health provider continued the importation of contaminated blood from the American State provider/seller and the handing out of death sentences to the British citizens who placed their trust in their British Goveernment and the NHS.

joe sprinter -'-----There are other transfusions which are available and safe , Erythropoeitin is one of these.Unlike whole blood transfusions, it doesn't suppress the immune system, also is without infection, being a catalyst for the production of red blood cells from the patients own bone marrow.

Since 1985, plasma (and Factor 8 and Factor 9 - which are the specific clotting factors that Hemophilia A and Hemophilia B patients need) can be Heat/Vapor Treated - which kills HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Not every country start using Heat Treated Concentrates immediately, which lead to many hemophiliacs being infected after safe clotting products were available.

With respect, why didn't the Conservative government sue the American State in 1970 for their goss negligence in regard to the grossly negligent provision of contaminated blood to British citizens and why didn't the British government stop importing contaminated blood and resist handing out multiple death sentences to British citizens? Why doesn't the Conservative government demand compensation for the gross negligence of the American state, now 49 years later, on behalf of the thousands of British citizens that were given a death sentence by their own State and health provider called the NHS, with respect? Why is justice politicised by the Conservative government to get out of legal and moral liability? Who will be left alive to sue the British government for gross negligence manslaughter on a genocidal scale, with respect. This case resembles the plight of the Holocaust victims in Germany in 1941, with respect.

Jehovah Witness basis on refusing blood transfusions. Genisis 9:4 Leviticus 17:10 and Acts 15:29. I see no mention of blood transfusion. The religion not ban blood transfusions until 1945 yet was founded in 1881. Blood transfusions were available in late 18th century. So the obvious question is: Did the Jehovah Witness's who received a blood transfusion between 1881 - 1945 receive an exemption from god in order to enter heaven?
