I actually keep the Acratech leveling base on my tripod all the time - it's not too heavy or large - and I find it very useful even for non panoramas: I get the base level, and then after I get the composition mostly right, I can make small adjustments left/right w/out having to worry about things getting out of whack. It's also really great to switch from landscape to portrait orientation w/out (again) having to worry about level. Very good overview. One note: the most important point about the nodal point is actually that you "save" pixels: if you are not at the nodal point (and/or you are not level at the base) then you start having waves of good pixels and no pixels on the top and bottom after the panoramic merge, which means you have to crop pixels.Once you have the base level and the camera at the nodal point after the merge you'll end up with almost all (if not all) the pixels available.

thanks for the review!. Can you let me know if there are any issues using their nodal rail with an ultra-wide lens??? What I'm wondering is that if used with an ultra-wide lens, is the rail going to be so long, that it will show up in the shot???

I love Acratech! I have the leveling base and the gp-ss ball head. They are expensive but the quality is top notch. With all of those gear on your desk, you just dropped lots of $$$$.

Don't you need to align the nodal point on the vertical axis too in order to be able to tilt the camera up and down? Or else you would have parallax between horizontal subjects. Am I wrong? I'm trying to understand which panoramic head to have and it's a it diffitcult to find.

Nice video on the differences in Pano photography and the gear needed. I would only suggest that better lighting so we can see the products better.

Great explanation but video very dark. Suggest you use a lighter worktop( and wear a lighter top) and a video light particularly as the products are black as well

I just found your video and have to say that it was very informative - thank you for sharing this information with us. If I may offer a suggestion it would be to use a white table top and/or a lighter colored shirt on these demonstrations. Most of the time during this video the black equipment you are showing us is lost to the background (ie. black against the black table top, black against dark green shirt). Otherwise I learned a lot and will order the head and leveling base this week. Thanks again!

Skip to 6:30 🤦‍♂️ Not to spoil the surprise but all of this gear together is about $1000-1500

I've been looking for video like this for some time. Thanks for creating. Comments: 1. The lighting seems to be low. I have my cellphone brightness set to the highest and your white background appears only to be gray. 2.Since most gears are black, a light color shirt would define the edges of the products better as you move them in your hand. I have a hard time seeing the details with the dark gray clothing. Again, thanks for the video.

Nice intro to panos. I recently invested time selecting stuff from Amazon to my lists that included the levelling base and nodal rail, but I didn’t purchase because I wasn’t exactly sure the added value to having these items (we all know how easy it is to by photography stuff we don’t need yeh!). So, anyways, having watched this I can see now it is exactly the right the right investment and also, that the equipment choices I made where all for the right reasons. Thanks and I subscribed looking forward to finding that next video btw. One thing, would be useful if you could add a note of the company name and products after you introduce them. I realise you’re not a paid ambassador for them but as you say give credit where it’s due. Being from Belgium I’m not sure this brand is available but useful to check before I make my purchases.

Very good comments but poor lighting of the objects (dark on dark clothing and background, on the dark table...). Otherwise... thank you.

On the GP Ball head, if you turn it around and use it as a leveling base, does it still function as a ball head? In other words, can I leave it in this configuration and not have to turn it around to use as a ball head? This would be cumbersome as an all in one ball head/leveling base.
@FindingMiddleEarth
@FindingMiddleEarth 6 лет назад
Yes, it will still function as a ball head when you’re not using it as a leveling base.

Nice video as always, Eric! I have a need for a simple Arca-Swiss compatible head for my IFOOTAGE Cobra 2 A180-II that permites Up-Down tilting with a Nikon Z7/any lens, and Kirk L-Bracket mounted. I tried the Sirui L-10 head, and while it's a beautiful, robust head, it unfortunately only allow left-right tilting, and the top plate cannot be rotated 90 degrees. Have you ever had expereince or seen reviews of the Moveski VH-10R 2-way Pan-Tilt Tripod Head? It seems to do what I need, though it doesn't specify Arca-Swiss compatibility. The description states "Sirui L-10 replacement", so I assume that it's also Arca-Swiss compatible? Thank you, and Be Safe!

The pano head is no good for vertical pan; it rotates around the head. This would cause parallax shift when rotating vertically. You really need a pano gimbal to perfectly rotate around the nodal point in both axis’s.

Hey Eric will the Acratech set-up suit a Nikon D850 and 14 - 24 mm lens? Would love to support these guys
@FindingMiddleEarth
@FindingMiddleEarth 3 года назад
Absolutely! The AcraTech pano head will hold your D850 and larger lenses too. The other head I wouldn’t push it too far.

Do you know how many degrees of rotation different lenses need to get overlap in doing panoramas, or do you know where I would find this info? I struggle to work it out in the field, by eye. Thanks for the video
@FindingMiddleEarth
@FindingMiddleEarth 4 года назад
From my experience, you typically want a 1/3 overlap

I love my Acratech leveling base but personally I feel the panoramic head is over priced. After tax and shipping you are looking at $500.00. I'm sure the quality is top notch like their leveling base but I went a different route. If it retailed closer to the $300.00 mark I'm sure they would sell a lot more. Again... I am in no way saying that their products are not very well made but there is a point of diminishing return.

For multi row don’t you also need to adjust to the Nodal point for vertical tilt?
@FindingMiddleEarth
@FindingMiddleEarth 6 лет назад
Yes, you would need the nodal for vertical tilt if you’re shooting a subject that is closer to the camera like architecture. For distant mountains, the vertical tilt nodal isn’t that important. If you want gear for the vertical tilt, I would say buy the Pro Media Gear katana Junior gimbal head.
@robertlombardi8301
@robertlombardi8301 6 лет назад
I called up the Acratech folks earlier today and they mentioned doing a test on vertical tilt with the panoramic head. They used the shelving in their warehouse as the test subject and although there is no vertical nodal adjustment, the results where impressive. Have you notice any detail loss due to ghosting for close subjects and multi-row panoramas? I have a Leica M10 and small primes. I don't see how I can even mount my camera on the Promedia gear gimbal. It appears that it's intended for mounting a long telephoto at the lens collar. The structure of the gymbal looks like it would prevent mounting a camera body at the same location.

@@FindingMiddleEarth I have the exact same gear and the quality is the best. I was also concened about the vertical tilt nodal point, but no more, because 90% of my panos are landscape, and judging from results with a handheld Leica, stitching has worked perfectly. So I guess when I try de Acratech setup (I got it recently), it will be fine. Great gear !

Eric having a RRS tripod with a RRS leveling base. I wonder if I could use that with the Acratech Pano Head. Your thoughts.
@FindingMiddleEarth
@FindingMiddleEarth 6 лет назад
Hey Joe, all of the Acratech's heads are the standard 3/8-16 screw thread so as long as the RRS leveling base is the standard size as well, it will work perfect together! Thanks!
