Panoramic Edit & Print Advice

I love finding a woodland scene that comes together as a panoramic photo. They're not always easy to find, visualise and execute, but it's fantastic when they come together and they make wonderful large format prints.
This is an image I made in a local woodland quite recently. I was very keen to nail the image so I returned the following day to retake the photo with my 55mm prime lens. It required a bit more editing than usual so I thought it would make an interesting photo editing and printing video. I hope you find it insightful and useful. Thanks for watching!

Yes I agree with previous comment about the interest in the flattening early on, the use of negative dehaze and foreground intensify! Brilliant.

I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts about why you edited it this way. So many videos emphasize the how not the why. Your comment about the importance of balance to photography is one of those simple statements with great depth. I will be thinking about that one for some time. Thanks.

That woodland pano is gorgeous Simon. It is amazing how quickly the ferns have turned. Over the last week in the Lake District the bracken is completely brown in some places. Great video and always good to see other editing techniques. Thanks Nigel

I hope the tree foliage in the Lakes will be good for 2nd half of Oct Nigel and not peak too early this year...I went first week in Nov last year and it was a week or so past it's best and having had to cancel Skye trip in may I'm especially looking forward to Lake District this autumn.

🇨🇦 Wow, Simon! I'm slacking off at work, here. (large-format printing tech) I'm going to have to watch this a couple of times. I'm a fan of hugely printed panoramas and feel that marketing them for above the livingroom sofa is an UNDER-tapped market! Cheers!

The orderly chaos of nature in this shot is so much different than the minimalist path Thomas, Adam and others are taking. Not saying either is better than the other, as I like them both. Just that you have an eye for bringing order to the chaos. Thanks for sharing how you edited this one!

Many thanks. I guess my primary objective is to portray the experience of woodland and how important that is to me. With that in mind, it's rare to find something minimalist. I find the more complex scenes are challenging but very satisfying to make images of :)

Great video and fantastic capture. One minor concern is the bright white object/ color at the base of one of the trees. My eyes are drawn to it and interrupts my appreciation of the entire scene.

I like this one a lot. Hahn. has a pearl I'm testing. I like the glowing colors. Red River has a good luster finish also, but I'm testing others because I'm not sure it holds out all tines and details. I've been using Canson papers a lot.

Fabulous image and some interesting post processing techniques. Most of us seem intent on accentuating detail and contrast rather than softening it. I don't like glossy prints, but I've never had any joy with matt papers either, they just seem to suck the life out of a print, and appear dull and flat even when I've had them correctly profiled and soft proofed.
@SimonBaxterPhotography

Thanks, John! It's worth persevering with matt papers if it suits your work. It takes a bit of getting used to if you're used to seeing back lit images on your monitor but I love the understated but classy feel.

Thank you for sharing your love of the woodlands and providing great guidance how these images can be captured in a lasting print. Can I make a suggestion about your presentation and the use of the mouse? I’ve provided many illustration software demos to customers over the years. I had a great mentor who taught me best practices for using the mouse on screen during live demos and web-based demos. Purposely use the mouse to draw the eyes to the area of attention then take your hand off the mouse. Don’t wiggle or circle the mouse quickly as the eyeballs in the room will get tired keeping up. Move the mouse at a slow to moderate speed when moving from one area of the screen to another. Too fast and eyeballs will get whiplash! It is okay to move the mouse around a shape. Do it purposely and do it once. I enjoy your presentations, Simon and will look forward to the next. Cheers!

Hello Simon, that was just incredible! I loved your thought processes and obviously the final print. I only use Lightroom, so when you mentioned Photoshop I shivered. I do not know if it an age thing with me but I soon forget all that has to be done and I get lost. Perhaps I should invest in a one to one Ps course. But basically, its a memory thing with me, so probably is got to do with my age. You are really a very talented person who has grasped the concepts of photography; printing and the theoretical side of it all. I imagine that all of your family are very proud of you indeed! So once again, thank you for sharing your skills and passion. Exemplary! Best regards, Allan Davies

Hey Simon. Another impeccable image and video walking us through some of the ways you add your signature atmosphere to your images. I smiled to myself when you gave the name of the image, as I was very much ‘feeling’ the LotR Alan Lee vibe too. Beautifully done sir. One suggestion - when I edit my own images, I get a lot of satisfaction from doing a quick before-after toggle been the raw and finished versions. I’d love to see the direct-comparison differences been the original and final versions of your images and I think it would help your viewers reinforce the cumulative effect of each of the modifications you walked us through, step by step. Hope this is a helpful suggestion :)
