Western Canada, in the winter up in the Rocky Mountains - I absolutely love it. I'm sitting back eating my Cara Cara orange, watching Todd do his thing with his Hasselblad digital X-pan. What could be better... not much. Although when I can, I use my Rolleiflex 6006 Mod2 now and then, with a 645 back and 2 - 645 masks to get an image that's 57x25 on film, which is close to X-pan territory. Granted I can only get 12 or 13 shots on a roll of 120 film, depending on the film stock. But the results are great for what they are. I sold my Hasselblad X-pan back in 2005 after it gave up the ghost, and it was just to costly to get it repaired, I got $900 for it back then after spending more than $2K for it 3 yrs earlier.
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
That sounds like a very cool system on the Rollei. I still love film as well, but the Xpans are now going for huge money, and if they break, no guarantee you can fix them. Thanks for watching.

@@toddkorolphoto I just don't know how those who do venture out to purchase an X-pan today, knowing that getting it repaired is next to impossible. And as you said 5K American is no easy walk in the park to spend on a film camera. There's a guy out in Calgary who strips down Nikon FE's and converts them to 65x24 film opening, its awesome and affordable. Jess Hobbs in Montreal did a RU-vid video on the one she bought, just wonderful.

Thank you Todd, inspiring, although there’s no chance of shots like that up here in Australia. On the image at 8:01 - was there any post processing or did the flesh of the broken tree give that glow? Congrats to your patient videographer too.
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
Oh man, I want to come to Australia bad and do photography. There was just a slight correction in the curves for the tree photo, I actually do very little photoshop. I really try and capture the scene and the light. But, because of the snow, it reflects night clean white light onto that tree to make it pop. The X1D files are so clean and accurate there is almost no colour correction as well.

Todd, you are an inspiration. I've recently become an X1Dii owner based on watching your videos and admiring your broad spaces work. I love the camera and the perspective of the format. @weisserth Год назад
Your "XPan" is a much better approach by now. With the actual XPan being THAT expensive, with no chance to get it repaired when (not if) its electronics fail, the pain of digitizing 35mm panoramic negatives, I also looked for a more attainable way to shoot that aspect ratio natively in a digital camera. I didn't drop money on a medium format camera for this, I settled on a Sigma DP0 Quattro, this works fine for what I need. Fuji and Hasselblad should have made the XPan fully mechnical with optional meter support (like the Leica M6, MP), that way that camera system could have been a true evergreen. Now you are paying a premium to enjoy something unique and special for a limited time because the XPan has an end of life while something mechanical like a Leica MP does not.

Yes, the 3:1 ratio is the holy grail these days. Is the Hassy doing anything to the photo other than cropping off the top and bottom to fit or is it performing some computer magic inside? I can't afford a Hassy but have been masking off the screen on my FF Nikon D600 to try to get the same effect when viewing a scene then cropping the image in post. Those XPan images just look like they came from an original X Pan.
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
Yes it crops the top and bottom, in the viewfinder you just see the pano image. And then you have these great juicy Blad files to work with.
@ckronauer
@ckronauer Год назад
@@toddkorolphoto I have the X2D, and yes, it's wonderful. I have not tried this Xpan ratio, but now I will. I think the advantage of the crop is that you see the image quite differently than simply cropping a full view down to this aspect after the fact. It's the act of seeing (the composition) that makes the difference. For those who are interested in 120 film and pano check out the Shen Hao 17. It's a 6x17view camera. Advantage is all the view camera movements are available. And it is 120 film, so no 4x5 sheets and holders.
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
@@ckronauer yes that’s exactly right, I love that you can see the pano image, makes all the difference in the world. Unfortunately the X2D still does not have this feature, rumour has it’s coming in an update. But that camera really should have that feature. And, both the cameras should have the feature to put the viewfinder into black and white. But that X2D sure is a beautiful camera!
