I photograph the Canadian prairie landscape covered in hoar frost. Under extremely cold conditions I use the Hasselblad X1D II 50C medium format digital camera and spend the day photographing the snow covered landscape.

For an old Arizona photographer, a landscape covered in hoar frost is surreal. Your images and this video inspire me to brave the heat of summer to photograph scenes unique to that condition. Well done sir.

Hello from Massachusetts....this is great, a frosty version of the sand dunes. I (we!) appreciate the tenacity you bring to the artistic task. I also have the Hasselblad, the newer X2D. It's amazing, but (sadly) it does not have the crop masking feature for the panos-hope they fix that. Good to see that it operates in sub-zero temps. I have photographed the Tetons and high southwest, but not Canada‚ especially your part. I'm putting it on the list! I will bring the 'blad and Wista 4x5.
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
Yes that sounds great, come on up a lot to see here. The X2D is wonderful, but the crop features are supposed to be coming in a firmware update. I have no idea why they didn't put that in, I have a friend who bought one as well and id disappointed that feature is not there yet, but amazing camera and fabulous files. No issues with my X1D II in the winter at all, except maybe the battery goes a little quicker, but that's with all batteries when it's that cold here. ;-)

@@toddkorolphoto Thank you, sir for the quick reply. I am going to start the research. I love both the outdoors and the city. Is the Stampede a good time, or is it a bit overwhelming? What would you suggest? Your B&W large format portraits (I believe it was that event with 8x10) are super. BTW the found your site the first time because I needed to learn how to load 4x5 sheet film. 🙂Best...

It's always inspirational to watch your videos, and this one is no exception. Beautiful b&w images. I love how you utilized black skies contrasting the white snow. Curious as to what post work you did to achieve the black skies? I'm presuming that maybe you dialed down the blues in LR or ACR after converting to b&w? FWIW - I now own all of the XCD lenses except the 80 & 35-75 zoom (no desire for either one of those, nor for the new V series either). I just purchased a used XCD 65 lens a couple of weeks ago. It and the 45/3.5 are now my favorite lenses. Both super sharp, and useful in so many instances. Loved watching you use yours in some of the shots.
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
Cool thanks for watching. Those lenses are just so good across the board. I actually do very little editing to the images. Obviously I convert it into black and white, but, I expose for the highlights, and the sky is a pretty deep blue out here this time of year. I do a slight curve adjustment to make sure the highlights look good and the sky just goes pretty dark, almost black, and that's it.

oh man, i was hoping for you to take that second shot of the tiny house on those hills without the fence in the foreground! yet again a wonderful set of images. i wish i could just walk with you on a day like this. question: do you choose the crop-format, for example square vs. pano, beforehand or do you crop after the fact to see what works best?
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
Yes I always choose before hand, and then I see that crop in the camera and shoot that way, it then comes out and into photoshop with that crop.
@davidh8258
