PanPastel for Beginners | Painting using Sofft Tool Sponges
In this demonstration, I will focus on the Sofft Tool knives and applicators, in addition to sneaking in a Masking film tip and trick to help with the background when applying PanPastels.
I use masking film to prevent halos around my subjects and show you how I mix colours if I don’t have the hue or colour I’m looking for.
The art supplies I use are listed below:
Pan Pastels
Sofft Tools
Pastel Pencils
Pastelmat by Clairefontaine
Glassine Paper to protect work while I was painting
Kneaded eraser
Derwent Superpoint sharpener
Mask IT masking film by X-Press IT
Exacto knife and Ceramic slice tool

Hi Chrissy! Just a little tip... if you don’t want your sponges to worn out to quickly, use a micro fiber cloth instead of a paper towel when you’re cleaning your sponges. Paper towels can be rough.

Thank you! For some reason i have been struggling with pastelmat lately, and when putting down my initial layers, they would be blotchy. then i would try to go over them with the same result. i tried to fix it with pastel pencils, but it just didn't look good. So i would try to work it more, spray with Spextrafix which then made everything spotty and darker. When you mentioned that looking blotchy was normal and to keep layering, it answered my question. I had asked in several facebook groups about why this was happening and nobody seemed to have an answer. i just restarted a large drawing for the 4th time using the panpastels, and it seems to be moving more in the direction of the look i want. Again, thank you so much for this video and example!

Hi Crystal, thank you so much for your comment and apologise for not replying sooner. I'm glad I was able to be of some assistance. First up!! I almost never ever use fixative when painting with pastels on Pastelmat. Pastelmat is made specifically for us artists NOT to use fixative. I've had way too many negative results using fixatives. And yes you have to layer, and layer, eventually you'll get the result you're looking for. I enjoy working with layers so this combination, medium and surface is perfect for me. And on another note, I too will start over a project if i'm not happy, so keep on keeping, happy painting and regards Chrissy.

@Xrissart 4 года назад
Hey there CC, apologies for not replying to you sooner. I talk about pastel pencils a lot of the time and differences between them. I enjoy using most of them for different reasons. Of course I do have a few favourites, for example, FB Pitt Pastel, Stabillo Carbothello, Bruynzeel, Giconda and Conte, they all have there purposes, some have soft cores, some hard and it just depends what project I'm painting and what effects I want to apply. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Happy Painting.

Xrissart No worries! I understand it’s a question with a vast answer. I will learn as I go. I tried your technique of using the frisket film before doing the pan bg and I cut thru my Pastelmat. 😢😢😢 How do you cut it and not cut thru or scar the paper? Parts that I didn’t cut thru have a big raised scar around the outline. 😢😢😢

Hi Chrissy thank you for the inspiration. What do you use to get your pastel pencils so sharp?
@Xrissart
@Xrissart Год назад
Hi Laurel, thank you for your kind comments,I've used many kinds of sharpeners, but these days I use those cheap inexpensive hand held sharpeners . Then when the blade blunts I usually throw it out. Again thank you for watching.

Asking what sharpener you use for your pencils :)
@heidid2346
@heidid2346 4 года назад
I was going to ask the same question as Jean Dominique. You got such beautiful sharp points on those pastel pencils. My sharpener “graveyard” is constantly growing because I’ve gone through so many but whatever you used seems to be amazing. I’d love to give it a try.

I have the same problem...getting a sharp point on pastel pencils. Wondering what sharpener also?
@Xrissart
@Xrissart 4 года назад
@@heidid2346 I have a graveyard of sharpeners too. But I used the Derwent Super Point. I know it does get frustrating to get a sharp point with Pastel Pencils. I reckon it's hit or miss with sharpeners for Pastel Pencil.
@Xrissart

What kind of sharpener do you use on your pencils? What brand pastel pencil?
@Xrissart
@Xrissart 3 года назад
G'Day Renee, I use all kinds of sharpeners, mostly the Derwent Super point (that dulls quickly though, mind you the sharpener is fantastic, it's the pastel pencil that is at fault here as it dulls all or most sharpeners) but the best sharpener for me is the cheap handheld sharpener. I end up throwing it away after a couple of projects. I'm okay with that as I have resigned to the fact sharpening pastels will always be an issue. Another option is to use a blade (that works too). As for pastel pencils I use many brands, PITT, Carbothellos, Brynzeel, Content and Giacondas. PS. Thank you for your question.
