This is one of the best reviews of Pan Pastels I've seen. I love watercolor, but lately. I've been veering off into pastels. I have a small set of Pan Pastels but I don't think I would ever use them as a major supply for the reasons you stated. But they can be the "star of the show" for abstract works where you have large swaths of colors and need luxurious soft blends and lots of undefined shapes. Thanks!

i'm not sure but i think coverage refers to surface area vs material used, and not opaque coverage, one over another. in other words when you apply the panpastel it will stretch and fill in the tooth over a larger area using less material. A pastel stick doesnt always adhere and spread evenly.
@nicolemartinart5819
@nicolemartinart5819 4 года назад
To me coverage is its ability to cover up . What your describing sounds more like surface spread . I agree certainly that a little goes along way with these . And I really do like them but I dont think they are for everyone nor do I think they could be your only pastels for this simple reason that they are transparent , more like a watercolor effect vs a traditional pastel look .

@@nicolemartinart5819, @spiritsjoy is absolutely correct. Don't want to give people the wrong info. Panpastel means an area for coverage, not opacity. They contain more pastel volume than a stick.

@@trishawadman8325 coverage in art has many definitions. Covering power or surface coverage . It really is open to interpretation but I dont feel I gave people the wrong info. I wanted them to know that you can influence a color underneath but not fully over ride it or cover it up like traditional pastels incase they didnt know I didnt want people to get the wrong idea and then be disappointed. I really do love the pan pastels and highly recommended them . No other pastel is better for such a smooth background and glaze effects . Thank you for your comment.

I just found your channel. Thank you for this nice Pan Pastel demonstration. I am interested in using Pan Pastels for my back round only. I use colored pencils and find it's difficult to cover the back ground with them, so I will give Pan Pastels a try. My question is, what is the black tool you are using to make those narrow lines? It looks like some kind of brush.
@nicolemartinart5819
@nicolemartinart5819 Год назад
Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you found it helpful 🙂 actually that black tool that I was using was an old double-sided eyeshadow brush . I find certain make up brushes perform very well . Particularly the angled eyeliner brushes. The one I'm using here happens to be by Lorac but the brand really doesn't matter . I have an ELF angled shadow / liner brush I enjoy just as much and it's dirt cheap . It's stiff enough to apply the pan pastel with accuracy but soft enough to pick up the pastel without digging into the cake . Works great for details . I love these pan pastels for mixed media and they've lasted a long time . Highly recommend 🙂

This is an excellent video explaining pan pastels - even the pros and cons. Thank you so much. I have the basic set of 20. Do you have any suggestions as to ow to mix them?? Do you mix them on a separate area and then pick them up? Can you actually take a bit in a dish, or something, to mix say a color with white? I am especially struggling with mixing with the black - it takes over the color so quickly. Thank you for any ideas and please keep up these wonderful videos!!

thanks so much for watching . sorry im only just now seeing your comment, youtube didnt show me for some reason. i mix right on the pan usually but you can also mix on one of their large soft tools and if you want you can take a palette knife and scrape a small amount of powder off the cakes of color into a small dish and pick up that way . yes the black is very powerful . maybe try mixing with the extra darks shades if you can afford to get a few . i think that works better . thanks for watching i hope i helped and please feel free to reach out with any more questions . im happy to help .

@@nicolemartinart5819 I have a question. I bought 20 pure colors and wanted a transparent one. Actually, I can't hear the exact interpretation, but if what I understand is right, does the color come out a little opaque?
@nicolemartinart5819
@nicolemartinart5819 4 года назад
@@헥사 they are semi transparent in nature all of them you can influence colors by layering but can never fully over ride the color underneath . I highly recommend that set you purchased because you can mix all the colors from that set and I know alot of fine artists who dont feel the need to purchase anymore . Hope this answered your question and if you have anymore questions dont hesitate. I'm always happy to help .

Any opinion on how it would work on canvas?

Did your pan pastels get harder/more crumbly, as you were worried about when you mentioned how the tops had become bumpy? This is an excellent review, BTW. Lots of knowledge from someone who's actually used them in a practical setting. I bought a set of the main 20 pan pastels, but have not opened them yet. I wanted to know if you've tried using them with polymer clay. Not just to add a dusting to the outsides (which is what nearly every video I've watched has shown) but actually mixing them into the clay. I'm also on the fence as to whether to get the pearlescent and metallic colors, or use mica powders like Pearl Ex. Either way, the color range is disappointingly narrow for someone who wants to make shimmery clay dragons and doesn't want them all in the same ten colors. I'd use metallic/pearlescent craft paint, but with no pigment information on the bottles, how do I know they won't fade?
@magical571
@magical571 8 месяцев назад
....just get loose pigments then, why pastels?... otherwise all that you need to get comfy with is color theory, clearly.

Thank you for a really great review. I'm interested in the PanPastels because of the dust and mess factor with stick pastels. The room I do my art in has carpet (old and shaggy). I've missed working in pastels and thought the PanPastels along with pastel pencils on my large table might work. I can cover my floor but know enough about myself that if the cleanup gets too long, I probably won't do that medium that often. What are your thoughts about dust issues with the PanPastels versus stick pastels. Thank you for any help you can give me with this.
@nicolemartinart5819

@nicolemartinart5819

thanks for your question . sorry I didn't reply sooner youtube sometimes doesn't notify me . yes you can mix both shades and tints from the pure painting color sets by adding varying amounts of white or black but I suggest you pick up an extra white as it will dirty quickly .

That's precisely why I did this review, I do really like pan pastels but not as a stand alone product and they are too pricey for a lot of people to be just a companion piece, or completely incompatible with both their needs and expectations. My reviews don't just sing the praises like a lot of RU-vidrs do, my loyalty is to my subscribers first whether the Stan's like it or not. I actually go in depth and discuss both the pros and the cons which many RU-vidrs are scared to do for fear they will lose their sponsorships, free product, promotional gifts and possibly upset a few stan subscribers if they express a strong opinion. Thank you for watching and I hope it was helpful 🙂

@@nicolemartinart5819geez what a clown. then if you truly care do a thorough lightfast test on the polychromos: the biggest offender when it comes to information -(27 of their three star pencils are absolutely fleeting, the equivalent of a 1, but people repeat like parrots the crusty old info on their chart just to justify their sunk cost fallacy of years of trust and money (and sure, they are a nice hard pencil if you are looking for that).} This test already exists; made and updated thoroughly by the cpsa, bu they prohibit distribting any meaningful detail or sharing any page of the book. So unless you pay around 80 dolars for their subscrition you'll never get acces anywhere (if you live in the us they price is closer to 15 dolars, but they flat out discriminate based on country, greedy f*cks lol). anyhow, biggest scam? faber castel. have fun if you care to debunk them in the name of your viewers (i mean it, pot of gold), best of luck. I remember when the whole gelatos debacle came around, and it seemed out of place for faber castell, but it was ultimaately dismissed as them catering to crafters. but no, their standards aren't great on their artist ranges either, only trust their graphite and charcoal.
