Once they got the kinks out... it was pretty close though. After the war the French had a quantity of Panthers they began overhauling. They were shocked to find dirt, pebbles, cigar and cigarette butts jammed into hydraulic lines. Wiring intentionally shorted and crossed. Tools left in gearboxes, fuel lines left untightened, bearings not greased or missing completely. All signs of factory sabotage... by both paid foreign workers and German civilians who were tired of the war. One French mechanic remarked that if not for their superior engineering they never would have been able to drive out of the factory. Keep in mind... prewar Germany was roughly the size of the state of Montana going up against the world's largest countries. A war of attrition was unwinnable. Late in the war strategic minerals and chemicals were almost impossible to find. Many vital parts had to be made with substandard materials.

Doubtful. A lot of those things you mentioned will automatically fail those critical components. Great engineering doesn’t cover up for that. Like all first hand accounts of well, anything, over time they would have grown into fantasy. So while some likely grains of truth, this is probably some sort of colourful bullshit story.

The best looking AND the best performing. There are stories of U.S. units capturing working Panthers, painting big white stars on them, and running them until they dropped. There weren't enough Shermans with 17 pounders and the Panther's high velocity 75mm was invaluable to the low velocity 75mm Shermans.
