🇩🇪 Tiger Tank " Hand Crank Engine Start Up "

The crank starter, is the recommended way of starting a Tiger in cold weather conditions, because batteries in WW2 were not very reliable, the tank also has an electric starter. The hand crank turns a heavy flywheel at the rear of the engine, when it reaches a high rotation speed, a pin is pushed or pulled, this connects the spinning flywheel to the crank shaft, which spins up the pistons thus starting the engine.

It is not the best, the Soviet's T34, KB ( KV, in Latin) , those are the best. They have diesel engine, engine power/weight ratio better, speed higher, e.c.t. if wee take 1939-1945 Soviet's design and made best tank's in the world. And they have them so much in 1941, so can easily cruch all Europe. But Hitler take the first move.

For those who don't know, This is called an *inertial starter.* That pole would be connected to a gear inside that hole, which would be connected to a few other gears in a step-up fashion. (Gear reduction but the opposite way). The other end of that gear train would be a *heavy* gear that connects to the engine's flywheel (connected to the crankshaft). Now that gear is heavy for a reason. When you got that last gear up to a high enough rotational speed, the momentum, the driver would use whatever mechanisms to connect that gear to the flywheel. Then, the energy of the _inertia_ of that gear's fast rotation would go into the flywheel, turning it. It wouldn't turn it for long. But it would be just long enough to get the engine started. Which is why i love german engines. They barely make a full revolution before starting up. Which, even by modern standards, is damn impressive. Even as old as this big heavy Maybach engine is, it started up in no time at all! And in my book, the mark of a well-designed engine is the quick fidelity of it's starting process. EDIT: Maybach engine, NOT porsche. I always thought it was a porsche engine. Thanks for the correction!

Yes but how hard would it be to mount a similar system as a backup starter on my old Ford. I've asked on countless automotive forums and nobody can give a concrete answer. They used to put inertials on old semi trucks too it can't be that hard right? Some fabrication work maybe but surely not as hard as totally rebuilding the engine

His platoon hid in the dark because they wouldn’t be able to take on the group of tanks that had started up in the night. He told me the tigers had to be started every few hours to keep the engines warm and batteries charged.

Its not actually a hand crank, no human would be strong enough to crank over a Tiger I's engine, no way in hell. This is an inertia starter, used on planes and tanks for ages, its a big old heavy flywheel that is slowly accelerated by an electric motor or human power, and once it is spinning fast enough it is engaged with the crankshaft and cranks the engine.
@valdasvalintelis5867
@valdasvalintelis5867 8 лет назад
+Adrien Perié Still - people are strong enough to crank over this engine, though not powerful enough to do it directly, without accumulating the power in spinning flywheel :)
@adrienperie6119
@adrienperie6119 8 лет назад
Valdas Valintėlis Yes and also with use of leverage and mechanical advantage, but the puny human's power output is never enough at any one time to crank over the engine, not close either, try and crank over a diesel engine, any diesel engine, and you'll see. Gasmoline engines are more forgiving because of the lower compression ratios. But yeah in theory if you accumulated all the kinetic energy you produced and liberated in the environment after it was brought to you by the sun more or less directly through organic chemistry in chemical form, you might have quite a bang, someone must have estimated that number somewhere.

Three of us got VIP tickets to tank day one year - during the day we had a 45 minute lecture about "how to start a tiger that's not been run for more than a couple of days"! Putting oil directly into places, removing plugs and manually turning it over - the whole thing would take hours (if you knew what you were doing). Or... you could restart the engine every couple of hours - so Oddball from Kelly's Heroes was dead right - restarting them every so often WAS standard procedure (and that "To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three tigers."!)

Yes that is true, but their manufacturing methods where sadly lacking, no mass production on the scale the allies used. It's been said by the Germans themselves that they produced each Panzer of all Marks pretty much by hand, one at a time. Only a little over 1500 Tigers were ever build, their best all-round Tank was the Panther too few of them.(about 7000 I think) And it was the excellent Russian KV-1 Heavy and T34 Medium Tanks that spurred the Germans to build the Tiger-E and Panther-D.

It's impossible to explain why I love tanks in general, and 131 especially, people either understand or they just don't get it. Mostly they just don't get it! At least other commentators on this site will understand. My kitchen is full of tank photos, and I would buy one if I could.

the tiger 1 had a hydraulically operated gearbox with "Dog Clutches". these are not friction coefficient clutches like a car one but physically need to be bashed together to click into place. just like a racecar gearbox with Dogs instead of synchro's. there's a cool read here www.alanhamby.com/transmission.shtml

@@LazyLifeIFreak Yes, that would be 3rd or 4th gear.
@thoriated
@thoriated 4 года назад
The driver only uses the clutch when starting out from a dead stop. From there, the clutch and shifting is semi-automatic. The driver pre-selects the next gear then pushes the lever to actuate the shift. Clutch actuation and gear shifting is done by a hydraulic system. It appears 131 needs some adjusting. Gearbox issues were a common problem for Tigers.

Despite the tank with the highest fire-power at the time is came into front operation (late 1942) is was notorious for being underpowered. The Maybach V12 engine was rated 700 hp but the weight was also tremendous, hardly less than a modern tank of the 21st century. So most Tigers were not lost by enemy fire but ended up with engine failures due to overheating and piston jamming.
