Yes we do, so we can get the use of the full pattern width, but also to help keep it in place.

You could try that, but we do have tear away patterns that we sell. You lay them directly on the fabric, stitch over the design and pull it off. Here is a link! www.longarmsupplies.net/collections/quilting-tear-away-patterns

Due to shrinkage along the quilting process, it is hard to determine what you will have left at the end. The more you quilt a pattern, the more you figure out shrinkage for that pattern. We teach for you to still line up the same as we showed in the video. Once you get to the last row, you would then secure your bottom edge of your top, then you would put a long piece of tape on the plastic thru the pantograph to match up with the bottom edge of your quilt. You would then make adjustments to the pattern with a pen to come in and out on tape. The stitching will come in and out at the bottom edge to show it is a continuous stitch still happening. It is very common when using pantographs that you won't get the full width of the last row, so its making adjustments at the end. We have a video on our channel by Linda Taylor and at the end of that video she will show you this process. It is called pantograph quilting.

I’m a lefty and it’s not a challenge to go right to left and follow the laser. I rest my right hand on the top of my machine and guide with my left hand.

Depends on the brand of machine. Certain machines don’t have a bracket for the laser on the opposite side.

You don’t need to baste in between when you baste and secure your top and sides as you go.

Some of the patterns are loose and some are dense. You would want to stick with easy curves, patterns with open space. Pattern 700 is really easy at 4" and some of the other 700 series, these were made for the smaller throats.

You would have to basically cut the pattern in half with tape. You would find your measurement of how much space you have left. So if you have 5" left and its a 10" pattern, you would put tape all across the length of the quilt on top of your pattern shield. Double check it will fit inside your 5" you have left before you start quilting. The reason for painters tape, is so you can connect the pattern back together, since you split it in half with the tape. I hope that makes sense.

Stars and Loops for the star pattern you need. There are so many holiday patterns, I would pick one that doesn't look to busy, that has more curves then points. Trace it in your mind when looking at it on the screen if you get stuck a lot on which direction to go, that pattern might need to be a pattern used as you get more experience down the road. Practice the rolling with the tips in the video a few times, before you start stitching that normally helps. It just takes some practice, you got this.

It's hard to explain over chat, we do have a newer video that shows you how to do it. You basically have to take painters tape and adapt the pattern. If you have plastic that you put your pattern under then it makes it much easier to do this. Measure where the end of your quilt top is, like how many inches you have left to quilt, then take that measurement and put the tape all the way across the paper pattern on top of the plastic. This will cut your pattern say in half. Then draw in and out points on the painters tape adapting your pattern to fit and flow, then quilt.
