The German Army units of the Legion Condor - the "Imkerverbände" (bee-keeper units) - in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) are rarely covered. These units were equipped with Panzerkampfwagen I and Panzerbefehlswagen, additionally they also brought with them anti-tank guns notably the 37mm gun. The Panzerwaffe drew various experiences from Spain, additionally many of the veterans served in training units and schools later on.

About the learning on infantry/tank coordination, I have to mention the battle of Brunete, an attempted offensive in which the Republicans ultimately lost due to the lack of coordination between infantry and tanks. At this point, the Republican forces had never fought using tanks in large numbers, and most conscripts had never even seen a tank on their live. The armoured battalion deployed to act as a sparhead made some advances but had to stop due to the fact that the infantry couldn't follow its path so quickly. Also, the battle of Madrid doesn't get the attention that it deserves. I mean, the Soviet defense on Moscow and Stalingrad was based on lessons learned during the battle for Madrid, like the fact that the defenders in urban warfare have a great advantage and that tanks have limited use in urban warfare (in fact the Republicans found that the Panzer I could be easily destroyed by throwing a gasoline-based bomb into its engine).

It's very complicated to coordinate Armour, Infantry, Artillery, and Aviation. In the Spanish Civil War, radios were rare, which meant that you couldn't do that optimally.

My great grandfather took part in the war, in the nationalist army (he was given the option of joining or be executed with all his family) and he saw a few panzerkampfwagen, btw he also survived without a scrath all the great battles, from the Ebro battle to the siege of Teruel, to get his legs cutted after the war in a train accident, nice video! Keep it cool!

Hazzmati There was in 1944 (5 years after the war was gone) a huge train crash in spain, the worst in spain’s history where more than 500 people got missing, my great grandfather was in that train and survived but his legs got traped between his seat and the seat of the guy in front of him, so he lost them... Luck is always a bitch!

the nationalist army did not execute civilians for refusing to join the army, there's is not record about something like that happen and mens to fight was not a problem for both armies in the beginning. what happened a lot in both fronts was the "ley de trincheras" where whit out even a "consejo de guerra" the indiscipline was hardly punished. At one point during the SCW, Italian International Brigade members realised that there were Fascist Italians in the trenches opposite them. The Italian communists started shooting, and hurling grenades AND insults at their countrymen. The Royal Italians troops yelled back "...why are you attacking us? We're Italian!", to which the Garibaldi Battalion members apparently yelled back "...EXACTLY!"

pretty much every one was fighting on both sides so its not unusual to see communists and nationalists from the same nation fight each other its like they took this from the streets of their home country to some place else

Kate, according to McGarry’s book on the Irish in the SCW, they got close but never were directly facing one another. The fascist Irish Brigade was however one of the main reasons the Connolly Column was formed. I’d love to see a video on the International Brigades one of these days :)

Good video. Thanks. Good to point out the recovery and maintenance lessons learned. Maintenance is the most important point most often overlooked by aficionados ... if the tank doesn't roll out ..you can't use it,. no mater how good it is.

Interesting how a lot of nation watched and learned in the spanish civil war but never take into account a technological improvment on the enemy side. France underestimated development of german Panzers, Italy underestimated development of aircraft and even Germany did not recognize that the AT guns where not really effective.

Actually, German panzers weren't really superior to French tanks. It was the radios, tactics and deployment of the panzers that allowed the Germans to run circles around the French...since panzer deployment was limited in Spain these advantages couldn't really be observed. Honestly, it seems as if even the Germans underestimated how effective the marriage of radio equipped tanks with panzer formations and encirclement tactics would be, as even the Germans were surprised at how quickly France fell

Kampfgruppe Kastner They mostly sent materials and advisors. Plus, the Spanish PCE (Communist Party of Spain) had some people sent to the USSR prior to the war, to learn in the Frunze academy, like Enrique Líster or Torcuato Modesto.

Iam betting this high number of "trained" spanish soldiers comes from adding up all sort of training exercises together: For example a company who got one training session from a german tourist in how to operate with armed forces would then be counted "trained", even though this was one hour in a classroom, while a single soldier who got trained as a tankdriver would have probably got way more training hours, but would still only be listed as one trainee.

Very rough calc, but based on typical reserve training these days (about 6 weeks of training), those ~2-300 Germans would have been training about 10 personnel (about one training squad depending on your army) which isn't out of the question.

The training number is realistic. It takes one NCO to train a platoon of 36-40 men. His first task is to find the best motivated and strongest in his platoon and make them his runner or runners. With three good subordinates he can train that platoon in the most basic combat tasks (marching, firing) in one week. In one month he can get in land navigation and rudimentary tactics. The war lasted 3 years or so which means 150 weeks times about what was it 700 German trainers. That's a lot of time in fact. I think the quickest one can do a basic infantry course including more than the most rudimentary skills and tactics but also first aid and simple tactics is six weeks. I would prefer to have 3 trainers (one officer 2 ncos) per platoon but it CAN be done with one trainer. In either case of course part of training is delegation. Also these units will fight better as a unit rather than being parcelled out as individual replacements to front line units. The noob always gets the most dangerous assignments :/ Best would be to have front line units as officer/nco cadres and replacement platoons trainers replaced by the core combat cadre.

He does very detailed vids about WWII and includes vid about some early war campaigns that most people are unaware of ie; Operations Battleaxe , Brevity etc. He has done a few vids about Stalingrad and 'Case Blue' which are very good. He is currently working on a documentary about Stalingrad. It'd be interesting to see a collaboration between TIK and yourself.

^this is an example of Soviet infiltration and sabotage, all of it: use your pacifist useful idiots to undermine force readiness with constant whining defeatism etc. Meanwhile bribe or compromise or infiltrate leadership at all levels to defeat your enemy before the battle starts. Russian/Soviet deception warfare is consistetly ignored (also no accident: they don't want us to notice all that). It's effectiveness is thus also ignored (and it can be VERY effective). Bagration is the best example of Soviet deception operations' successes but is FAR from the only one.

Why don't more vehicles have sloped armor? The Pz.IV has a massive flat plate of armor on the front of the turret. If you sloped it forward, it would actually give the crew a bit more room on the inside.

The Spanish nationalists made modifications to the Panzer I placing a 40mm gun in the turret instead of the dual MG. They were nicknamed "Negrillos" (blackies) by the soldiers.

I'm afraid that version armed with a 40mm never existed. The version of Pzkw I armed with a 20mm Breda AA gun existed. It was the only suitable armament upgrade possible on a Pzkw I due to lack of space.

Like the info.Think about 6200 Spaniards were trained for the Tanks, and Anti-tank, Maintenance and Transport. . Best as I can tell there were only 4 Panzer and 2 T26 companies.( Not counting the odd old tank companies .. 2 ish? ) But I think they were really good trainers. The Nationalists seem to be more professional while I sense the Republican forces had trouble here.. even frustrating the Russians. While I admire the Republican esprit , I sense they seemed to not quite get it... Militarily and Politically... I know Flak was only German operated and by the Air arm as were some technical units like Radio intercept.. Their Motorized Equipment was widely varied and really mostly civilian... which make sense that early..but I don't think Germany really simplified and standardized rolling stock during the war. A lesson that should have been learned here. But maybe I'm wrong here. It seems that this happens because Blomberg was the man who started the new German Army and this early effort recognized that Germany Lost the war and these officers (he chose) decided that they would change the Army so it would win the next war. There must be a good book on this?

Not a tankette - those have no turrets (Italian L33/35). The Pzkpfw I was a light tank, inspired by the British Light Tank Mark II, which entered limited production in 1929.

Tim Smith. The difference between a tank and a tankette was not to hve turret or to be turretless. The difference was to be armed with a proper gun, at least 20mm cannon, or to be armed with mere machine guns. Ultimately tankettes were, as described by an author whose name I don't remember, "the armored carrier of one or two machine guns".

In the 30's there were some kind of "tankette fever" spreading around the world. At that time you had the Italian models CV33, CV35 and CV38 (later renamed L3/33, L3/35 and L3/38), the Polish series of TKS and even a Spanish Republican model based on the Sadurní tractor manufactured by IGC. All those model were turretless, armed with one or two machine guns. Then you had the more refined models of tankettes having turret, the German Pzkw I, the British series, pompously named "light tanks", from LT Mk I to LT Mk VI, the two first versions of the French model AMR-35, the Czech model, turned to Romanian, R-1, and the Japanese model Type 94 Te-Ke. All those models had turret but still armament consisting of machine guns.

3:45 "...the irony of Germans fighting Germans..." -- not really; that was the fate of Germans for thousands of years. Even WWII could (with great difficulty) be constructed as a German civil war by roundabout means; half of the 'white' American troops were ethnic Germans, and it's worth mentioning where the Franks and the Angles and Saxons came from. That Germany is resisting divisive Putintrolling proves they remember the price of masturbatory extremism: it really _is_ 'self-abuse'.

Although an excellent effort, As always you are forgetting the Fascist Italian intervention in the Spanish Civil War... They were there at the SAME TIME, so why does everyone, and I mean EVERYONE forget this fact? Other than that, excellent effort!

Fascist Italy was sent what was by far the largest foreign force involved in the Spanish Civil War; you're quite right about that - why does no one cover that?
