the Panzerschreck was made better than the bazooka for two reasons, the shreck didn't require batteries, instead used a spring loaded electromagnetic system to fire and secondly the bazooka barrel was the same diameter as the rocket only a bit bigger, the schreck however had the barrel with three ribs going down the length of the barrel allowing for less friction on the rocket, and the ability to fire with a dirtier barrel or even minor damage say like a bullet or fragment hole as long as it wasnt on the rin

@treysmith8917 2 года назад
@@thereynaldosan7695 I can’t attest to that, however I know they had winter and summer versions of the rockets. And the ignition system was easier to work than the bazooka since it was a wooden block with a metal plug that was inserted into the ignition box on the rocket instead of wrapping wires around CPU’s like the bazooka
@Treblaine
@Treblaine 2 года назад
@@thereynaldosan7695 The Panzerschreck's rocket was simply bigger which gave a higher velocity but it didn't burn as fast as the American Bazooka (either the M9 or the larger M20 "Super Bazooka") which burned out entirely before it left the tube so no need for a blast screen.

wrong, there was a fairly easy fix for this problem ... soldiers just layed at an angle so that their feet werent in line with the tube. Those who burned themselfs with Panzerschrecks were mostly untrained civilians forced to the frontline defences (Volkssturm).

There is a recent video of Ukrainians using an NLAW against Russian armor at near suicidal range. It didn't look much farther than 100 meters. The newer shoulder fired anti-tank weapons are designed to fly just above the tank, and then shoot an injector down through the thin top armor. They seem to be effective in this latest conflict, but, as you point out, the crews are vulnerable to counter-fire.

@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq Looking forward to it! I could give boring minute detail about the German anti tank arms mentioned but no one would want to hear that. Especially endless translation from German high command text at the time. You mentioned just about all anyone could expect concerning the Panzerschreck. Mind I do think it is a bit of disservice to the Panzerfäuste as it really deserves a separate more in depth video. It's principal of operation is very different being both recoilless & propelled by gun propellent. not combustible fuel. Same role but completely different design philosophy The Panzerfäuste has more in common with a gun then a grenade discharger/launcher & especially a rocket propelled grenade like the M1A? bazooka or Panzerschreck. Though the German Shreck where inspired by the yanks their pulse jet for the rocket works on a very different mechanism as they had to work with what their local industries could produce, hence the greater flash as you mentioned but it did allow a considerably larger shell. i doubt any would want me to rabble on about technical features. The Panzerfäuste could be argued to be the 1st recoilless gun that fired a explosive shell/round. But that depends a lot on the semantics of definition that are not set in stone to this day.

It was definitely dangerous, but it beat the alternative tactics for relative safety and effectiveness. They tried axes, grenades, magnetic mines, and the Russians famously tried anti tank dogs with tragic results. Just about everything else required the foot soldier to get much closer to the tank and the closer you have to get the less likely you are to succeed and survive the encounter.

I was in the Australian Infantry and did several specialist courses and served in several different Specialist platoons. One was DFSW or Direct Fire Support Weapons, we used the Mag58 Machinegun in both direct and indirect fire using tripods and the same C2 sight as a mortar uses and the also used the 84mm Carl Gustav. DFSW was the amalgamation of two different platoons, SFMG (Sustained Fire Machine Gun) and Anti Armour platoon. We used to practice tank hunting with the 84. They used to weigh 16kg unloaded but now the new versions are only about 9kg I believe. Pretty sure the rounds averaged about 2.5kg each depending on what the were and each man carried 4 of them that's on top of our normal rifles. I once weighed my gear fully loaded for a 5 day operation and it weighed 71kg (156.5 pounds). Had to lay backwards on your pack then someone would roll you over then get to your hands and knees and either use a tree or your mates to help you stand up!!

The Panzershreck was a heavy anti Tank gun and was effective in destroying the Sherman tank in one shot however due to it's heavy handling the soldiers had replaced it with the disposable panzerfaust to deal with tanks due to it's light handling
@likeaplatypus8909
@likeaplatypus8909 2 года назад
Thats not right at all. The panzerschreck was for special trained soldiers, it had a longer range and was more effective. The panzerfaust was for untrained or light trained users, like the volkssturm. The first panzerfaust only had a range of 30m, later 60 and more. The panzerschreck was effektive up to 150m. The second reason for the extensiv use of the panzerfaust was, that it was cheaper.

That part where they show actual German footage presents one minor, but very important detail that I don't think any movies or video games ever showed. That loading the rocket into the tube was not enough. You also had to connect it to the inbuilt battery, in order to fire it.
@HazardousMoose
@HazardousMoose 2 года назад
small nitpick: The Panzerschreck doesn't use batteries. Neither in the launcher nor the rocket. That's one of the main advantages over the bazooka. But the rocket is still fired with an electric impulse, which is why a cable needs to be connected from the rocket to the launcher. The electricity instead comes from a small electromagnetic generator. Forgotten weapons has a nice explanation, you can find the video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nllZnCcYy-w.html

The Panzerschreck was the Result of Germans capturing an American M1 60mm Bazooka during the Africa Campgain, and the 88mm Panzerschreck gave the Americans a Reason to Further Enlarge their Bazookas, which Gave way to the M9 Bazooka and the Largest Man Portable Anti-Tank Launcher used post World War 2 (At least in my Opinion), the 90mm (89mm) M20 Super Bazooka, probably my Most Favorite of the Launchers, what can I say? I Love Big Guns that go *BOOM!* and No one can Deny that a Flash of Light and Fire, giving way to an Earth Shattering Boom, is both a Frightening and Awesome Sight to Behold! And Seeing How the Panzerschreck was Used IRL (Via Training Videos) and in Movie, you can Really see it, that is more that Just Shoving a Rocket up the Metal Tube's Rear, but I guess its a Tiny Detail the Most Movies don't show because it quite Subtle and well in a way... Uninteresting... But to me, Tiny Details like that are Nice to see... Simply shows that Movie Makers have done their Homework. My Thanks, for another Informative Video Johnny! And Seeing the Red Berets again, since watching it when I was Little, was a Total Nostalgia Trip, not that a lot of the Film Clips used in this Video Didn't give me any Nostalgia Trips... In fact... Bazooka, Panzerfaust and Panzerschreck are what I would call the "Hollow Charge Revolution". Prior to hollow charge weapons, the primary way to destroy a tank was: Fire a realy hard projectile, realy, realy fast. Just comparing muzzle velocity and callibre could tell you wich AT gun was "better" at penetrating armor across all ranges. "How far away could it penetrate X mm of armor" became the biggest factor in deciding how usefull a AT weapon was. Hollow Charge Weapons changed that. For them, projectile speed is _entirely_ irrelevant. Which is why they could be turned into human portable weapons, suitable for ambushes. Armor thickness is also largely irrelevant. Distance only maters for dodging and active defense AT guns basically have vanished now. Even tank guns changed. While there is still the odd kinetic penetrator, most AT projectiles nowadays are hollow charge weapons themself. The race for speed has ended. At the same time, Armor changed. "just a thick armor" became entirely useless. Spaced armor, Reactive armor - that is where it is all at now.
@thelvadam2884

they changed armored warfare that is true , but todays MBT main ammo to fight other tanks are still kinetic penetrators such as APFSDS , while anything else basically uses hollow charge.

Just two linguistic notes: The first "k" in "Panzerknacker" is not a silent "k"; in German, it is audibly pornounced as "-Kn-". And at 2:13, the second "-zer-" in "Panzerzerstörtrupp" - i.e. "Panzer-ZER-störtrupp" was left out entirely. The way it is spelled here - effectively "Panzer-Störtrupp" - it would mean "Panzer Hampering Team".

Hey man the videos are amazing and maybe a bit of a late comment. I just wanted to mention that (im from Germany) panzerknacker translates more to tank cracker than tank breaker. But still awesome video

What are the tanks shown in the clip from The Last Escape? They look like M41 Walker Bulldog tanks modified to look like some type of WWII German tank.

tanks can still be usefull, but perhaps no longer in the infantry support role, but rather to take out other tanks and ifv/apc/.... in the open field, as those would be better equiped to take out the anti tank teams

modern APS systems make anti tank weapons like atgms and rpgs useless. Mbts therefore remain relevant. thankfully the russians are too cheap and corrupt to have Aps systems. Only their t14 tanks potentially have it, if the money earmarked for those even made it to its destination lol

@@KaiserLandsknecht c)ZPU-4 14.5mm QUAD is 1949 technology a)M45 Quad uses the M2 browning the first .50 cal machine gun produced since 1923. a)M45 Quad out performs b)M53 DsHK Quad but the c)ZPU-4 14.5mm QUAD is stretch. You taliking 2 & a 1/2 decades of tech. You both are yanks I presume so have a bias for your quad mount & arms. mind as a Limey blight I honestly do not care. No way the m45 quad is better than ZPU-4 14.5mm QUAD in the anti air role as ZPU was designed for that purpose. The M2 browning was not purposely designed for the anti air but filled the role well enough as a cheap easy to construct means. The m45 would out do the ZPU in anti infantry of anti motorised due to the rate of fire, smaller system & incline angle. So not all bad! mind e ZPU would fill the 2 latter mentioned roles well enough.

Nice piece of kit,got one myself,problem is it was issued,depending on the theatre of war,with summer and winter rounds......if a winter round was issued in say northern france it would be ineffective....if a summer round was say issued in russia,the heat of the sun would be enough to make a spare round laying about explode the body of the round had a special raised section to denote which round was for which climate.

@jantschierschky3461
@jantschierschky3461 2 года назад
Panzerschreck. Well pzf ist cheaper and more powerful, however you had very limited range max 150m , most be within 70-80m, ambush and sneak. Panzerschreck has a range of 400m, so for ambush, defence great. So both systems are very effective if used right hence production of both.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mXWUCmeUF9o.html Just asking, from this Swiss film about their armed forces and what not, they did use a Panzerschreck, right? Or is this a more "modernized" version for the time, or reproduction the Swiss made? Been wondering that for quite some time.

In the early years of the war the light-weight 37 mm anti-tank gun, in motorized units, was highly effective. Much more effective than the alternatives at the time. When light-weight anti-tank guns could no longer be effective and the effective anti-tank guns could not be deployed in adequate numbers because of a lack of transportation for them, then these AT team weapons and panzerfausts became ubiquitous.
