This list is of POST WW2 tank films only. I have plenty of lists featuring WW2 tank movies. Russian Tank WW2 Movies: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fil-fnW3kQI.html WW2 Mock-Up Review: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C1pJkEAsmEM.html
In the movie "The Beast" , they really made the terrain look like the Kandahar Plateau. There are some issues with the small arms and the modified DShk but, as a former tanker, I fully agree - one of the best tank movies ever made.
"The Beast of War" is one of those overlooked little masterpieces that hardly anybody has even heard of let alone seen. I was fortunate enough to catch it on cable back in the early 90's when they were running it. One of the best war films of the last 40 years or so.
I have it on DVD (yep) and to be honest it ranks up there for me with Saving Pvt Ryan in terms of "realistic portrayal of war"... it can be a bit obtuse at times for theatrical effect, but overall the movie works.
It was playing regularly on Greek tv back in the 90's. Great character dynamics and an original theme (especially for the time). I might be alittle biased by nostalgia but I think that it is the best tank movie to this day.
Nah. Modern Russian war films is just copypaste of Hollywood action with thick coat of sovietophobia and justification of nazis like . Try find soviet "Zhavoronok" with translation.
Red Dawn never gets credit for a decent M-1 Abrams mockup on the opposing side when they get up to the front lines. I've always loved it as it looks good but they made a point in not showing it too close. In "The Beast" they used liquid-filled heads for the main gun tank rounds, which is why the main guns go into full battery as they should as the liquid gives enough resistance against the blank charges (and also creates a massive amount of steam which looks like smoke). With expertly-timed ground charges, many still think they used live rounds in the opening of this movie.
The Beast is an excellent film and I particularly enjoy the sequence when they deal with the blind round (or ‘dud’ if you’re speaking American). However I’m not sure if the T55 is fitted with a flamethrower as standard. Apart from anything else, they’re tiny inside and there’s no room for the fuel!
Can't forget the fact that the mockup T-72 was so good that the CIA followed it as it was being transported and wondered where they got an actual T-72!
Not a tank specific movie, but I enjoyed the tank scenes in Kelly's Heroes. A lot of it looked pretty good, and the "special" ammunition was hilarious.
So good, it led to an anime called Girls und Panzer that does some brilliant referential love letter moments based on some of its scenes, including the aforementioned "special ammunition" one.
Danger Close: The Battle for Long Tan has a great scene when M113 armoured personal carriers of alpha company arrive to reinforce delta company of the 6th Royal Australian Regiment, after they are ambushed by a 2000 strong force of North Vietnam regulars and Viet Cong.
"August Eighth" is a good Russian flick featuring some good tank action, especially showing the T-72's auto loader in action. While it's not a war movie per se, it's set during the 2008 Russo-Georgian War.
I saw it on a flight to Amsterdam, weirdly, in 2011. I agree that it’s a gem of a film. It’s hard to watch at points exactly because it’s so good. And the comparison to Das Boot is on point.
Near my hometown of El paso Texas is Indian cliffs ranch were the battle scenes of courage under fire were filmed. The mockups of tanks and helicopters are still on display there.
So the Israelis made a short series called "The Valley of Tears" about the Yom Kipur War (or The October War if you are an Arab). The series is frankly shit and misses the opportunity to do one of the most impressive tank battles of all time justice. But they did a scene in the beginning which shows remarkably well the way modern Israeli tank crews are drilled to fight (I was in one, so I know what I am talking about). The guy I talked to who actually did take part in the fighting as a loader told me that the accuracy of the tanks was highly exaggerated for the tanks of the time and more appropriate for modern tanks with fancy optics and aiming systems, but the basics are there. Check it out.
They definitely could have done more regarding the tank scenes and even the IAF. As both the IDF and IAF claimed seriously impressive victories in the air and on the ground during the Yom Kipur War. Only 1 or 2 Skyhawks in the whole series and not a single Mirage or Nesher.
I really appreciate that you always include movies from around the globe in your play lists. Not too many have probably ever heard of "Warriors". Excellent movie.
Film recommendations are always welcome, thanks. There's an interesting tank scene in the Children of Men from 2006 where a tank is used to quash guerilla fighters. I think it demonstrates very well the meaning of "firepower". It's not a war movie though.
I’m glad you mentioned The Beast. Long ago I had seen part of it and had forgotten the name. Given current events I’ve been wanting to go back to topical media.
“Transformers-Revenge of the Fallen”. You can see two M1A2 Abrams tanks and an M2A3 Bradley; real ones; during the Battle of Egypt. Same with “War of the Worlds” and “Battle: Los Angeles”. Both films used actual USMC M1 Abrams from 2d Marine Tank Bn.
Apart from Battle of the Bulge and their versions of tanks and battles, which today are hilarious by being so wrong, the odd thing is you showed about the best war movie I've ever seen as a reference .. 'Das Boot', maybe that's worth having a look at under your microscope? Have a good day
Das Boot benefits from the author being a war correspondent that actually served on subs. Not as dramatic as the book makes it but still close enough. The person the Kaleu is based on survived the war and later commanded the nuclear driven frighter Otto Hahn. Oh and Buchheim wrote follow ups to Das Boot. Darker but interesting.
He helped the good Afghan guys there. At that time, the director did not know that after a little more than 20 years, the United States would give its citizens 60 years in prison even for financing Afghan militants.
I suppose it’s because it would be a budget and production nightmare but I’ve always held out hope we’d get a Cold War movie with massive tank battles with the story line from Red Storm Rising.
That's too bad it's only for post-WW2 'cos "White Tiger" / "Белый Тигр" is one of my faves (more of a thriller than a tank movie). Perhaps a WWII ep for those?
I served on a Bradley while in 4/7 Cav. Its an amazingly versatile AFV. I was also on uparmored m1151 humvees and later on Strykers, but the BFV was my favorite.
Another great one was the ending of the first episode of the series valley of tears, such a great action scene that captures the chaos and panic of armoured warfare
Loved the video! Would like to add 2 brief scenes from different movies, which to my knowledge, are the only ones where actual M1 Abrams tanks appear in movies. Not really tank movies at all, but still worth noting since real M1s are super rare in cinema to this day. 1st one is War of the Worlds (2005). The hill battle scene vs tripods features a USMC M1A1 Abrams tank rolling up the hill. 2nd one is in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009). Battle scene in Egypt features a US Army M1A2 Abrams.
Very good list. I was surprised to see Damien Lewis in Warrior. I will have to check that out. How many alum from Band of Brothers appeared in The Walking Dead. We saw Joe Acevedo and I know Michael Cudlitz was also in the series. Have you ever done a video on vehicles used in movies for urban assault? Perhaps a UAV (Urban Assault Vehicle)? If not then it could be fun, especially because you would get to include Stripes EM-50 UAV.
The A-Team scene is made a little more amusing now that a modernised M8 is one of the designs being looked at for the MPF systems... and apparently just lost.
There is war footage from Syria where irregular forces sneak up on an active T72 and throw a grenade down the barrel, moments later the tank cooks off with flames venting out the hatches.
Man it's kinda sad that there's not much movies showing modern tanks and stuff like the M1A2 Abrams,Challenger 2,Leclerc,Leo 2A4-A6, and more also i can clearly see my man literally getting alot of comments of "Where's Fury ?" "Where's T-34 ?" xd
Interesting list, I only knew three of those. :D And please pronounce "Das Boot" like "boat", it's closer to the original German word than the English word boot, haha
The Walking Dead tank was an M60A1, with the improved turret not found on the previous M60. I'm also not sure if M60s were ever called Pattons, but they do share the same lineage so lol
The M-60 is in fact the only post-war American tank without a nickname. Some only add the Patton distinction because it looks so similar to the Patton series, but it's just M-60.
Good selection and I’ve give a strong recommendation to “Valley Of Tears”, an Israeli miniseries picked up by HBO about the epic 1973 defense of the Golan Heights by outnumbered Israeli tank units.
The Beast of War could be one of the greatest tank movies of all time, but the American accents of the main cast, who are meant to be playing Russians, just completely takes you out of the movie
Idk, I’d rather have an American voice instead of a really bad Russian accent by an American. Just comes down to which one would be less annoying I guess lol
OK so once again I am mentioning the Saints and Soldiers series. Specifically, Airborne creed and The Void. Airborne creed has a great final battle against a very nice Panzer III mock up and in The Void, they use two restored M18 Hellcats against the same Panzer III mock-up though they film it as if there were 3 tanks. The mock-up is really well done compared to many I've seen and the Hellcats steal the show with their speed and firepower. Good movies all around.
The one in Buffalo soldiers is notva Leopard 1A5. Welded/blocky turret makes it an A3 or A4. The cage on the front of the turret for the PzB 200 makes it a 1A3 variant. While some A3/A4 (ie the Danish) where upgraded to A5 fire control and optics the typical A5 is based on the cast turret version
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq I have the benefit of having Leopard 1 commanders in the family and serving in the cold war german army. So I was around the Leo 1 variants quite a bit. West german 1A5 with cast turret base m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YOmqZufLkYw.html Besides the Danish 1A5 variant is IMHO the most beautiful variant m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JZVjgwiBRAA.html
To my knowledge The Beast of War is an Israeli production, not American. That is why it is such a superb movie. It was filmed in the Negev desert and the helicopter that shows up in the end is an Israeli Air Force Super Frelon, making for a MI-8.
Buffalo Soldier, the Joker, am I right? I also own Operation Red Sea, though they used the Hummer, they would have probably used their own, China's Dongfeng Mengshi, which looks very similar to the HMMWV. I have a 1/64 scale version of one. I also own Beaufort, an Israeli film, I can't recall if there where any tanks in that film, however, I wanted to mention it. May I ask, will you, or have you made a review of CBC's mini series about the Avro Arrow? I hope this video goes well for you this time. Take care, and all the best.
The reason in the film that they mostly did not use any Chinese equipment, Is they don't want to be known that the ACTUAL Chinese army is there involved.
I once saw a picture in a magazine of a car - the left half had been crushed by a tank lengthwise, the right half looked okay. I think it was in a German village somewhere after an exercise. So shit does happen.
