Greg Papa, Tom Flores and Lincoln Kennedy man the broadcast in this all time Raiders classic. Derek Carr and the Raiders go into New Orleans to open the 2016 season to battle future Hall of Famer Drew Brees and the Saints.
The only what if I have about the raiders is what if they weren't owned by a narcissistic egomaniacal petty asshole who torpedoed the greatest offensive player he ever had (yes, Marcus was a better offensive weapon than Bo) and completely sunk this team in an ocean of mediocrity for decades since their last Super Bowl win.
The other stupid thing that Delrio did. Carr had a broken finger that he was playing through so he stayed in shotgun. That signalled to the Colts we were piling on that’s why they kept rushing Carr. We were literally 6 McGloin hand offs away.
I remember watching that game on TV. When they went for 2 at the end I was screaming not to do it, take the game to OT. When they made it I was screaming, "Your'e a genius. That's why you are there and I am here." Very fast turn around of emotion s. LOL
I swear, we got a decade's worth of good fortune and breaks in that 2016 season. This game is a great example. So many small things. The Saints having to burn a 2nd timeout after screwing up a playcall that had the Raiders fooled up 24-19. Instead of maybe down two scores, it's 27-19 and they have just one timeout. The PI call for Coop on the last drive. Then the PI on the throw to Richard that was probably uncatchable. Then a dumpoff to Richard burns 35 seconds before Roberts gets the TD to make it 34-33. And with the silly penalty on Crabtree after the 2-pt conversion, Janikowski's having to kickoff from the 20 meant the coverage team had to get down there instead of a touchback. Bates and Trawick and Holmes (boy did we end up missing THOSE GUYS) get down there and six more seconds burn off. We needed all of that because Brees got them to the 44...if he had 5-6 more seconds, he might complete a short pass and Lutz may have walked it off on us from like 55 or 56 yards. Instead, he has to make a 61 yard FG and just misses it. Those little things add up to wins. Compare all that to how we lost all those close games in 2020. That's how little the difference can be from being 7-9 or 8-8 to 12-4 and a playoff team.
This defines and started the modern day classic Raiders games imo. We had still been nursing the Super Bowl loss, retreads at HC & QB (JaMarcus...) and it seemed like Del Rio was going to continue that trend outside looking in. Came in... & BANG!!!
2016 offense was the best offense we had since 2002. 2016 defense gave up 1000 yards in the first two games. 500 yds here and 500 yds against Falcons the following week.
All the Carr haters for get about the 2016 season and the fact that Carr was mentioned for MVP that year...boy how the years go by and memory goes as well.
The other thing NO one mentions especially his haters, is that this is the ONLY year he had a somewhat decent defense and not even his best offensive year, and look at how great they were, cuz every year Carr was with the RAIDERS he had the worst defense in the league
@@trumptouchesivanka You can never mention to Carr haters that the D was piss poor when he was there. They still find a way to blame him for everything. Oh well, he's gone so we move on, but a lot of Carr haters can't move on they love to still hate him, and he has on effect on the Raiders.
IF I WAS SAINTS HEAD COACH DENNIS ALLEN. I WOULD HIRE BILL MUSGRAVE TO BE THE SAINTS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. BILL MUSGRAVE S OFFENSE IS PERFECT FOR QB/ 1# DEREK CARR'S SKILLS & STRENGTHS.
Del Rio lost the locker room that year. Also firing Musgrave was a huge mistake, and promoting Ken Norton Jr. to defensive coordinator was a disaster. Del Rio carried that throughout his head coaching career, firing and promoting from within, promoting coach’s not ready for the promotion
IT'S COACH JACK DEL RIO'S FAULT. DEL RIO SHOULD'VE PULLED DEREK CARR OUTTA THE GAME LATE AGAINST THE COLTS. THE RAIDERS ALREADY HAD THE COLTS GAME WON.
To this day I always think what could of been if carr never had gotten hurt week 16 in a nothing game against the losing record colts right before we went to the playoffs only to lose to brock osweiler in the first playoff game with us having a 3rd string qb
