We hit the west coast to explore the brand new Paparoa Track, New Zealand latest Great Walk. We ride from Blackball to Punakaiki, 55 km and spend over two hours above 1000 meters.
We hope to show viewers what to expect from the track the terrain and the huts for when they venture forth.
Punakaiki is located about 3.5 hrs drive south from Nelson in New Zealand's South Island and is located between Westport and Greymouth.
Home of the famous Puankaiki rocks we find out there's a lot more on offer to whats probably an underrated location.

I rode the Track the day before you just a month before my 70th birthday, I really enjoyed watching your video as riding requires concentration and not as much of the surroundings can be appreciated. My riding time was a little less than 6 hours which was a little silly but I didn't know how long it would take so kept hurrying along, next time I will take more time and have a look about. Thank goodness we rode it then as no one has been up there since really. Thank you for your video.

Wow that is a fast time through the track. I hope you had a great day up there like we did. I'm sure it would be a lot less fun without a warm sunny day. Thanks for watching and commenting and well done getting up there for a great adventure.

Kevin. So with a good level of fitness you can knock it out in less than the DOC posted timeframes? Looking at doing in a day to get through.

@@cameronhall7018 Yes, good level of fitness and confident on grade 3/4 tracks, you would be a fair bit slower if it was wet. I watched the weather patterns and picked a settled clear day and went for it, stayed at Blackball Hilton the night before and when I finished the track, good venison meal there. There is a section of road from Blackball to the start of the track, buy one of the locals a pint and they might run you up to the start in the morning, saves 30-40 mins. I did that and they left my car at the pub and keys were in the bar when I returned. Have a look at this and you might be able to work out likely times for yourself, www.strava.com/activities/3158217777 when I finished at Punakaikai I hitched a ride back towards Greymouth with one of the 1,000's of tourists milling around there, but that was just before lockdown so you would need to see if commercial transport is available. Thanks for the comment and watching. We do tend to miss a bit on the bike as we like to roll through steadily in a day carrying just the essentials. We will go back again and also do the pike memorial track when it opens.

@@getoutside519 I have one question for you. I’ve just started MTB after 30 years on the road and 6 months gravelling. I see a lot of references to the various level of difficulty on your trails. I am familiar with the international colour/shape MTB difficulty systems, but can’t find a reference to a number system. Except for hiking trails. Any ideas? Joe

@@joebeech7423 Sorry never seem a number system Joe. Just the color/shape system. We do most of our research on trailforks who definitely use the color & shape system.

Loved the vid thanks for sharing! Definitely adding to the list! Only thing I would mention, is it would be so awesome if you could give a bit of better pronunciation a go, especially for "Paparoa", will encourage others to try too! Its like this - Par par raw ah :) happy riding!

Awesome ride, can you share the ride on Trail Forks? Cheers...

@getoutside519 4 года назад
Yep I tried to upload the ride to trailforks but the track was not loaded yet. I then tried creating it and it got rejected - due to some out and backs we rode to get to the huts. I will try modifying the GPX file and try again.

Its a loop trail or you need to park another car when you finish? I really want to plan a trip to there next summer. How many hours did you take to finish? Thanks

@@zenopf Theres about 62km between the two trail ends. I highly recommend using the shuttle service from punakaiki motor camp. The last part of the shuttle climbs a very bumpy gravel road so great to to use your own car. Shuttle was super easy and sets you up being independent rather than asking a family member or friend to shuttle you.

No expense spared in signage but the signage is pretty poor in delivery the message. I took a wrong turn and went down the Pike29 memorial trail carpark which left me having to call out the police to get a lift back to Punakaiki.

What's wrong with using the word 'Tramper' instead of 'Hiker' ' We have 'tramping clubs' not 'hiking clubs'. It's a shame and in the process we lose another small piece of our tramping culture. Just saying.
