The Pike 29 Memorial Track was built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers.
It is the first ever dedicated mountain bike track to pass through a national park in New Zealand and is the country’s first ever “Great Ride”.
As well as an MTB trail, it accommodates walkers and forms the 10th addition to New Zealand’s “Great Walks” trail system and is the first to be built in a generation.
Passing through the rugged and storm battered Paparoa Mountains on New Zealand’s West Coast, it connects with the Paparoa Track and descends down to the Pike River Mine which was the scene of the 2010 mining disaster which killed 29 men.
From the highest point on the track there is an uninterrupted and flowing 8.5km descent down a well formed track to the Pike River at its base. Not a single peddle needs to be put in the whole way down.
This video is a sneak preview by the trail builders showing off our creation with the first ever ride through of the track. The video also documents a few of the secret features that we snuck in during the build.

You guys went way above and beyond with the way you made the trail, where it would of been easy to go straight you have made for some really enjoyable turns. I rode the trail by accident Feb 24 while heading on the Paparoa trail, I found the signage slightly confusing, plus when i asked the shuttle driver if there was just one up and down the Paparoa Trail he agreed. I ended up marooned at the Pike 29 Memorial car park. A long story short I had to call out the police to ferry me back to my car at the Punakaiki shuttle pick up point.

Thank you. I haven’t seen the signage yet. It’s possibly something that could be improved. Maybe a map would help. I think you got to ride the best bit of trail because of it though.

Just checked the DOC website....track still closed...sheesh,enough already with this "never ending recovery" I'll be back on the Paparoa for the 3rd year this Dec and will be riding Pike 29 open or not....And I'm sure I won't be the first🙂
@TomWoodwardVideos
@TomWoodwardVideos 2 года назад
Not to mention the price! Over $50 million and they still want more. The Pike recovery people are in cushy jobs hidden away from scrutiny up the end of the Pike valley, and they don’t want to give them up. The years that I was up there all they were ever doing was drinking coffee in the office. Hopefully the track isn’t in a state of total disrepair. Also hopefully when they do open it they don’t get a team of labourers flattening it out to be the same as the Paparoa track. We made this track specifically to be the biking track!

I saw some sigs of e-mtb not allowed, but, hypothetically, if I don't see the signs, and go with an e-mtb, what could happen? =D
@TomWoodwardVideos
@TomWoodwardVideos Год назад
Exactly, nothing. The signs are only there because theoretically you’re not allowed e-bikes (motorised vehicles) in a national park. However e-bikes don’t make any problems so it’s just a legal technically. Just do it.

Is this open? Can you go look at the Pike River buildings and portal?
@TomWoodwardVideos
@TomWoodwardVideos 2 года назад
You can see the portal from the track, and the track take you right down to just below the mine entrance. For that reason it’s still closed while they do their never ending recovery.
