This is a growing series of videos about the various steps in the hand papermaking process. Look for other videos in the series.
Resources from the video:
I used plastic stencils like this, but you can cut your own designs in mylar or duralar:

Hi Helen. We met many years ago when you had an installation at a library, north of Denver. I am a fiber artist but now getting into paper-making so now I'm watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise! I just bought your book and am learning page by page. You are an amazing artist.

Carol Ann! I remember visiting your amazing space in Rino. How fun to hear that you are getting into papermaking. I hope you'll learn something here. Have run, and thanks for watching!

Love and thank you! Just to clarify, you stencil on a couched sheet and then press?

Very intriguing! I am also interested in pulp painting. I hope there will be a pulp painting video! A question ; Does the base sheet need to be wet? Thanks Helen!

Thanks for watching, Noreene! I'll definitely do pulp painting in the future. Yes, the base sheet is freshly made. The fibers bond best when everything is in a similar state.

Thank you for this video, Helen. I've also tried pulp stenciling and had similar frustrations with the finer stencils. Would increasing the water-to-pulp ratio in the pigmented pulp improve the outcome, or perhaps using a shorter fiber than flax?

I'm not sure, Ron. I tried flax and cotton and had similar results. I was wondering about the height of the stencil. And I haven't found a good squirt bottle to spray pulp through - that might be another option to try. There's always experimentation to be done!
