This is our pilot episode of a demo series we're launching for 2021. Watch as papermaking artist and studio co-owner, Jenn Woodward shows you a demo of pulp painting and throwing. There's even an unexpected demo fail to enjoy!
Thank you to studio co-owner Gary A. Hanson for producing this video, and to Solomon Kimrey for the music. You can hear more from Solomon at www.solomonkimrey.com/

Just wanted to say I appreciate you! This was very helpful and I picked up a few things I’ve been wondering about. Loved your final result!

I really like the demo, and i am excited to see more. I'm just starting out with paper making and want to work with harvested materials, like elm bark. Could you make a video about pulping harvested material? Keep making videos and thanks.

Thanks Ben! We will be adding more video demos soon and working with plant materials is on our list for sure. If you haven't watched this video about stinging nettle harvesting that's in our playlists we recommend checking it out - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1VJMR4orW28.html Happy papermaking!

Love your video. It’s so refreshing to see how artists actually work and have little fails all the time. I laughed when you dropped that bucket because I’ve done the same thing.

Great video! Love the demonstration. What formation aid is being used? I am trying so hard to draw with paper pulp made out of recycled office paper waste and it is not working. Not coming out, clogged purring. Or not the right consistency of my paper pulp. I would appreciate all your advice here. Thanks.

Awesome! I've been making paper book covers, myself, so that was cool to hear about your intentions for the thick paper. Maybe a book making demo in the future! I just made up my own way to glue folded pages together, and I don't make the book pages, they are torn from a bought roll, but I would like to make them if I can figure that out. Thanks for the tips about formation aid. Is PEO, polyethylene oxide a natural medium? What's your favorite natural sizing? I have so many questions.

Thanks! We've done some research on PEO and from what we understand it's often used in making biomaterials. Depending on it's molecular weight it is also known as PEG, and is used in making laxatives. There's some good info on this wiki page - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyethylene_glycol Sizing is a whole other topic. Some of the pulps we used in this demo were internally sized with Carriage House Paper's sizing - carriagehousepaper.com/sizing-575 We are experimenting with the finished paper now and different external sizing techniques. We'll share that info in another video soon. Stay tuned!

Hi. Great video. Normally, you would use the opposite side of the mold. How did you get the paper off? =) Just curious.
