On this trip I return to the French River just after ice out. My plan is to make a base camp in the Pickeral River Outlets area of the park. When I arrive, I'm forced to adjust my plans as I'm greeted by an ugly surprise.
Another stellar job on a beautiful trip! Truly more of a film than a video, as is the case with all of your content. I've been so busy in the workshop all winter that I'm only now getting around to seeing this. Thanks very much for the shoutout with the fire kit. I'm glad you like it! Can't wait for the next one! 🤙🏻🧡🏕🔥🛶
The sky, the stars, the moon, the sounds of nature - oh my, what a great video. So nice not to have loud music. The sounds of nature make it so relaxing. Thank you for sharing this adventure.
A spectacular video capturing the sounds of nature, the devastation of the fire from where I spent my childhood summers at our cottage at the very mouth of the Mag Channel looking out to the Bustards. My grandfather built original cottage in 1908. Heaven!
Thank you Jason for the most perfect way to start Christmas Day. I feel completely chilled out now and I can see me using this video as ASMR relaxation. Your cinematography and composition are as always outstanding. Thank you for sharing your adventures and your vision. It is truly immersive. Merry Christmas to you and your family and Happy Paddling in 2024.
Awesome, thanks for taking us along. At the start of your video, you were singing. At that moment, I realized my singing may not be so bad. 😅. I thoroughly enjoy this trip. Thank you.
Another stunning video Jason! I remember that fire happening. I live almost a three hour drive east of that section of the French River, and when the fire was happening we actually had smoke from it all the way to our area for a few days!
Just a thought, but do you have the Merlin app from Cornell? It will tell you every bird species just by their sound. It is truly fantastic, and it is free.
I first saw Sandhill Cranes 15 years ago at the Tobermory airport. Now there are thousands upon thousands along the North Shore of Lake Erie near Port Rowan and Long Point
Jason, I'm telling ya... there's nothing like putting on your videos on a quiet morning and just forgetting everything and feeling like I'm right there in the moments you record. You capture all the feels I love about canoe camping. I really miss it and I need to see the French through my eyes one day for sure. Not through a virtual reality headset or AI.. 😂😒. Cheers and Merry Christmas to you and your family! -Mark
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah AI is hitting fast... the text to video stuff is shocking already and its just in its infancy. This next couple of years is going to be disruptive on a few fronts!
YAY, You're back with yet another episode of the most peaceful, beautiful and fun film and photography on RU-vid, in my humble opinion. I must say, at the beginning of the film, when you returned to a fire damaged French River and spotted your favorite camping site now burned to the point of not being useable, I had to fight tears. I found it incredibly sad to see such devastation, from beauty to ugliness in a flash. Still, nature continues to sing and islands of color remain in the grey. Hope springs eternal. Thank you so much for an enjoyable 40+ minutes. I look forward to your next one.
yeah it was kind of shocking in the moment... I cant imagine losing a home or property to fire... hard enough losing a fav camp spot! Some of the pines in that area were really old. They weren't large trees but had incredible twists and gnarly growth patterns due to the windy / rocky conditions. I've spent hours taking photos of the wild root growth of those trees. It's ok though, probably necessary in some regards.
I really enjoyed your video that showcased how the simple sights and sounds of Nature can soothe our souls. One small suggestion. As the spring peepers, chickadees, yellow-rumped warblers, and white-throated sparrows were prominent, it would have been useful to put a caption up when they sang. Great work.
THanks! I'm working on getting to know the different bird sounds :-) I couldn't name half of them in the moment but often look them up after. I agree, it would be neat to identify them during the vid.
Mate, thought for many years that your secret sauce was b roll. Right, listening to this I now know it’s your aural b roll. Always a pleasure. Oh and merry Xmas, Ric
The the sound is the thing! I need to start doing even more wild recordings of these places. I spend loads of time with the mix... thanks for noticing :-)
Hi Tumble home, I love you videos. Next time you use the fire steel try holding the striker still and pull the rod against it. It's easier to aim the spark. 😊 Richard
Hey Jason, how are you? So nice to have all the birds in this vid, from sandhill cranes to white crowned sparrows, song sparrows and more. Loved the edit of your bee question, nice touch. :0). Crazy fire, thank you for sharing, soon be time for 2024 peepers. :0).,,, Bob
I so enjoy the zen of your videos! Your eye for natural beauty is amazing and it is definitely expressed in your filming and photos. Very sad to see scorched land but hopefully it will regenerate to it's fullest over the upcoming years. Thanks for sharing. :) :)
According to Audubon, Sandhill Cranes have increased their range in North America. They are still considered vulnerable because of habitat loss. Thanks for a great video!
Interesting! I remember hearing them for the first time years back and thinking... What the heck is that! I imagine thats what a Pterodactyl would sound like
Great audio and time lapse video. Sorry you cut the trip short, but a slow paddle home is also fun. Looks similar to the Adirondack Mountain in New York. I mean besides the mountains lol. Great relaxing video.
From rural Nova Scotia .... Thanks for another top notch video! The video, still pic's .... and audio ... are of the highest calibre. If only Bill Mason could see your work :) , I'm sure he would have approved!
I have to add one more comment. I wish you were able to get out to play more often. Your videography and fun personality is a fav. By any chance, do you publish a coffee table book??
Great video buddy. The audio really took the win on this one. Fantastic job capturing the sounds of spring. Never been to the French before so looks like I missed out on some beautiful areas. Like the limited edition TH toque in grey! Amazing stuff as usual. Thanks for sharing! 👍
Again, I have said it before and will say it again. Your videos are the best!! The visuals and the sounds love it 😍😍. Question: I always watch your videos on my TV, so the aspect ratio you have chosen is because most of your audience watches them on their phones? Nicely captured, the devastation of nature due to negligent human presence.
Is that canoe the “puddle duck” as shown in Gil Gilpatricks book? I built one and just love it. So versatile as a solo or tandom canoe. I built mine super light, only weighs about 36 lbs and a joy to portage
Yes! Omg 36 lbs? Mine is 60lbs! It was built long ago by an uncle of mine... his first build. If mine was 36 lbs I would probably never have bought a carbon boat. Id love to see a picture of yours.
Brilliant as always, thank you. Really makes me wonder if someone could do hiking videos to this level of artistry? Would the gear be prohibitively heavy?
The cams are so good and small now. I use the go pro for most of the filming anyway... the R6 is mostly for stills and timelapses. I watched a hiking vid in California / Muir trail area and it was all done with an Iphone... looked amazing.
Thanks! The cedar boat is an old one built by my uncle (his first of many). He sold it not long after building it. The man who bought it got sick and it sat unused for many years under a cottage. (25yrs ish?) My uncle ended up purchasing it back when the man sold his cottage. That was about 13 years ago. It had hardly been used and was in near new condition... He sold it to me for a song :-)
