Paragliding from the summit of Ben Nevis! Hike and fly adventure, across the CMD arete. A wonderful curving ridge line in the Grampian Mountains in Scotland that links Carn Mor Dearg (English translation: great red peak) with parent peak Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. In this Flybubble Vlog I enjoy the arête in spring conditions on firm snow, saving the knees on descent by flying from the summit of Ben Nevis on my lightweight paraglider. This flight has been something I have wanted to do since I took up paragliding five years ago so it feels fantastic to finally have everything come together as part of a brilliant mountain journey in some beautiful conditions.
"Carn Mor Dearg is the ninth-highest mountain in Scotland and the British Isles, with a height of 1,220 metres. It stands a short distance northeast of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, to which it is linked by the Carn Mor Dearg arête'." - Wikipedia
"Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the British Isles. The summit is 1,345 metres above sea level and is the highest land in any direction for 739 kilometres." - Wikipedia
"The Grampian Mountains is one of the three major mountain ranges in Scotland, that together occupy about half of Scotland. The other two ranges are the Northwest Highlands and the Southern Uplands. The Grampian range extends southwest to northeast between the Highland Boundary Fault and the Great Glen." - Wikipedia

Excellent video. More discussion of picking launches like this please. Also gear choice commentary would be useful.

Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂 I was fortunate to fly over Ben Nevis in epic XC conditions with incredible clouds and light, experiencing some of the most beautiful and majestic views I have ever seen. I hope to fly in Scotland again under good weather conditions. 🌤✈🏴

Well done and well explained. Is the summit of Ben Nevis suitable for launching without snow or is it jeopardised by rocks and boulders?
@flybubblecarlo
@flybubblecarlo 3 месяца назад
Kind of but yes, the summit is covered in rocks and boulders. 🤔 From my very limited knowledge of the area, having only flown from nearby Aonach Mor Mountain to and over Ben Nevis, not launched from Ben Nevis itself, it looked to me (from ~ 6000 ft AMSL) like it might be possible to launch from near the summit but this is covered in rocks and boulders - so it's most probably wiser to find a more suitable spot to launch, and into wind - and then hopefully climb up and fly over the summit with White-tailed or Golden eagles! ⛰🪂🦅😁

The summit plateau is covered in big boulders, and launching there would be difficult without risking tearing your wing or lines. If you descend a bit to the south or west there are grassier areas.

@@andrewjcraig Carn dearg (near gully nr5) is usually the best takeoff spot for the Ben, paired with Carn Dearg 1020 in the south, if no snow is present (8/10 times wind is Westwards) Tip: If you start near No.5, You can proxy fly the whole tourist path and carve around Meal an Suidhe, just to land 5m near the pub at the bottom.

"Doesn't get much longer than that in the UK" Is this true? Is there anywhere where prolonged ridge soaring is possible? I've just got my licence in NZ and returning to UK for summer, hoping to get some longer flights in! :)
@flybubblecarlo
@flybubblecarlo 3 месяца назад
That's just for a straight "top-to-bottom" flight, as it's called in the UK. "Sled ride" in the US. "Un petit plouf" in France. "Foefie slide" in South Africa.

Prolonged ridge soaring is possible and common anywhere there are hills, mountains or cliffs in the UK, as everywhere else. 😁
