Parallel compression is the flavor of the month. Most compressors these days have a mix knob. Saves a lot of CPU usage.

Michael L. Actually it’s the flavor of multiple concurrent decades but thanks for the reminder. Mix knob does not give you as much control as an aux track but it is helpful when you only need the elements in that particular compressor or plugin. In either case, this is helpful for people who have never done it the old way and insightful for those who have. Par Comp doesn’t take much CPU in my experience but since we’re always striving to keep the CPU load down I’ll just say, “ Thanks “.

Great video. Yess NY compression is standard now. Plus I’m buying this song because I’m a DJ for clubs. Also side chaining delayed vocals help control the dynamics of the effected vocal, this way the vocal echo isn’t all over the place. Plus a nice D esser

In theory, I understand compression/gating and dynamics in general, but I feel like I really can't hear the difference most of the time when experienced producers all go nuts for it! For example I understand the theory behind this video, but I really don't hear much of a difference. How can I train my ear to notice the subtleties? THanks for the videos, you're a legend.

Thanks for the tip. I can hear it for the most part, but just haven't fully trained my ear on hearing slight changes when surrounded by an entire mix. When I imagine what's visually happening to the signal it helps me describe the effect to myself in my head xD I like ur channel as well, thanks yall for doin what yall do ayyyy

Thanks Wayne, I was able to perform this technique on a snare in attempts to fatten it. I then started to hear phasing occur once the proc/unproc signals play simultaneously. I made sure the tracks are both stereo, per the tip early in this video. Is there a way to address that? Houston, TX

I noticed on majority of your videos, you places certain plug ins in specific blanks on “inserts A-E, and Inserts F-J”. Why is that? How come you cant just start from the first blank? Hopefully my question is clear

Inserts are processed from top to bottom. The order matters. The previous plugin will feed into the following.

Thanks for the question. Parallel compression gives you the benefit of presence and power that compression gives you. But using too much compression can restrict the dynamics of your signal. So, instead of squashing the main signal, you make a copy of that signal and compress it hard removing most dynamics, this allows you to retain the dynamics of the original signal while still getting that benefit of compression. Try using it on signals what you want to be dynamic but also increase the overall presence and body.

You mentioned when we make our send to leave them MONO to avoid phase issues and the like, but towards the end of the video I noticed that both of your parallel compression tracks were STEREO. The Angry Engineer yes I wouldn’t recommend that you solo safe the Parallel channel. It might interfere when you try to solo something else depending on which method you are using. What might work better is to group the 2 tracks together after you get your balance.

gotcha, so you still need to compress the lead ; then you can parallel compress. Am I right ?
