I would love to thank you Jay for this amazing lesson. I paid for 6 lesson at my driving school and failed the parallel parking mainly because I never control the car on my own to align beside the car hence I started looking a day before my road test. I watched this video constantly over and over and when I did enough hand motion practice like I was actually in a car. I gained enough confidence I needed plus I spent additional money to borrow the car I PASS with your help it was straight forward Thank you so much again

Just failed my driver’s exam bc of parallel parking. It would be so much more helpful to actually parallel park on a street and not in a parking lot with cones set up for several exercises it was very confusing. Ty for the video, very helpful.
@DriversEdDirect

Sorry to hear that, totally understand that it can be confusing... Even though the mechanics are the same, the visual reference points are definitely different when you are parking between 2 cones vs 2 cars. Keep practicing and you'll get there! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Hi Inday, it's okay and perfectly natural to be a bit nervous before your road test - it shows you actually care about the test, which is a good thing! Acknowledge your nerves, but also acknowledge the fact that you've been practicing a lot and working hard at your driving skills. On Sunday, when it's time to take your test, have confidence in yourself and trust in all of the preparation you have done thus far. Take a deep breath and then show the examiner the best driving version of yourself. You got this Inday! Let us know how it goes!

Can I change mirror during test for parrallel parking?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 3 года назад
Hello Tano, great question! Here in California, they do not perform parallel parking on the drive test, so I would recommend contacting your local driving authority for clarification. With that said, anything you do on your drive test that is safe and within legal driving regulations is completely acceptable to do on your drive test. If you feel that adjusting your mirrors prior to or during parallel parking will help you complete the maneuver safely, then it's perfectly acceptable to adjust your mirrors as needed, as long as you do it safely and legally. If possible, I would recommend adjusting the side mirror before beginning to parallel park, but if you do need to make mirror adjustments during parallel parking, make sure your vehicle is safely stopped and under control before doing so. If you adjust your mirrors while the car is moving, that will most likely be a fail. Also, when you are finished parallel parking, don't forget to re-adjust your mirrors before you pull back out into traffic. Hope that helps, please let us know how it goes, thank you!

Am i supposed to look out my left side while reversing?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 2 года назад
Hello Destiny, great question! While you are reversing, you want to primarily be checking behind you by looking over your inside shoulder (over your right shoulder here in the U.S.). You also want to glance in your rear-view and side mirrors from time to time, but your main focus should be looking over your right shoulder, behind you. With that said, you do want to be constantly aware of your entire surroundings, so we strongly advise that you pause and re-check your surroundings from time to time like Jay demonstrates in the video at 3:52. Just remember to look behind you, over your inside shoulder, whenever you start backing up again. We hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions!

Line up rear door with bumper.... People like myself who drive pickups... 😑😑 Especially single cab flatbed dually like I do. Hey all joking aside great video and helpful. Other than the fact, like I said I drove a 1948 dodge 1 ton dually so stuff like lining the post or read doors (which I don't have) is not possible
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback Braedon! Yeah, using the rear door reference point doesn't do you and your 1948 Dodge (very cool) much good :) Using the rear tire as a reference is probably a better fit for your situation. That is why parallel parking can be such a challenge - the visual reference points vary from vehicle to vehicle, and no two vehicles will have the exact same reference points. At the end of the day, everyone needs to figure out the best reference points for their specific car or truck. Thanks again and please stay safe out there!

I probably wouldn't need help if my parking spaces were that huge, but I appreciate the video. Do you have any reference points I can use if I want to parallel park on the driver's side? Stuff like the back window obviously won't work that way. Thank you in advance.
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback! While we don't encounter driver's-side parallel parking situations in the US as often - only on one-way streets - the basic concepts are still the same. However, instead of the right-straight-left technique you would use left-straight-right technique. The 45-degree reference point still applies, and you can also use the "mirror trick" as a visual reference point as well. Some of the other reference points would obviously change, and we'll have to look into making a separate video for that in the future. Great question and thanks for watching!
@mrcx6142
@mrcx6142 3 года назад
@@DriversEdDirect Thank you, your answer is much appreciated & I'm looking forward to the video! I also feel like judging the front when you're about to tuck yourself in can be quite a bit harder if the car in front of you is facing you instead of facing away from you - especially when it has a low, long front as opposed to the often flat and shorter or higher rear.

@@milels6917 Hello! Thanks for sharing, hang in there! I know the videos show "easy" parking situations in low traffic areas, but that's where we recommend you practice fine-tuning your parking skills before you try to do it on a busy street with lots of traffic speeding by. Once you've got the hang of it on these quiet streets, then venture out to the busier streets and practice there. Thanks for watching and please stay safe out there!

As a cyclist, I don't agree with the advice to fold in your driver's side mirror when you park (you won't be able to see the cyclist approaching in the mirror, thus risking opening the door in front of the bike). 🤕

Hello! That's a great point! It would be a good idea to check for cyclists before exiting the vehicle, and if it’s safe to do so, to fold the mirror in once they’ve exited to help prevent accidents. Thanks for your input!

Interesting, I've also seen many lessons where they do full right until lock, tail light of parked car visible through passenger side window, then full turn left until lock. However, I think that's for a tighter fit. I'll add in the straight reverse like you did for the larger parking spots during my drivers' ed and see.

Thanks for sharing! There is definitely more than one way to get the job done, ultimately you'll use what works best for you and your car given the parking situation. Please let us know how it goes!

I have been practising this technique but i am able to psrk 5 time's out of 10 times....what should i do...do you have any other techniques or video so i can watch that as this one is not working for me
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 7 месяцев назад
Hello, thanks for the feedback! While this video lays out the basic steps of parallel parking, I think you are finding that no two parking jobs are exactly the same. Out technique will work for most situations, but depending on the size of your car and the space you are fitting into, you may have to make small adjustments here and there. The more you practice, the more you'll confident about making small adjustments for each parking situation. But thank you for the feedback - I think a great idea for a video would be one where we do several different parallel parking maneuvers - sort of giving you a variety of situations to learn from. Thanks for watching!

Hey guys, As this was a demonstration using a car. would using the same technique and visual markers as this parking video be the same for parking a minivan?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 2 года назад
Excellent quesiton! The truth is, no two vehicles will use the exact same reference points for parallel parking, but the basic steps (right-straight-left) are the same for both cars and minivans. The best thing you can do is a lot of trial and error until you figure out the reference points that work for your vehicle. For a larger vehicle like a minivan you may find the following helpful: - You will need a larger space to park in (of course) - When preparing to park as you see in 2:30, instead of aligning your rear tires, try aligning your car's BUMPBER with the other cars bumper (this will increase the chance of you fitting a larger vehicle into the parking spot) - For the reference point at 3:24, you may need to adjust where you stop the car when aligning the window divider with the other car's taillight. If you find yourself parking too close to the curb, then you'll want to stop a little sooner. If you are parking too far away from the curb, then try aligning your window divider with the other car's license plate (instead of the tail light reference point). I hope that wasn't more confusing than helpful. If you get our there and practice the right-straight-left method and combine it with reference points that work with your minivan, you should be good to go! Thanks so much for watching!

I don't understand turning the wheel all the way before reversing.. it messed up my first road test and I failed. I reverse straight then, start turning right, straight again, then left. Also the actual parallel park starts at 2:51 because you have very long winded explanations which loses your audience with short attention spans. This video could be half the duratiin

I keep doing this method and I always end up too far from the curb. What am I doing wrong?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 2 месяца назад
Hello! I know it can be frustrating, especially because every car is a different shape and size, so there's really no "one size fits all" parking solution. If you are ending up too far from the curb, you may need to adjust your visual reference points slightly. In your case, when you are at the 45-degree angle, try reversing an extra few inches before turning your steering wheel back to the left. That might fix the problem you are having. Also, once parked, you may need to make small adjustments, such as steering to the left and reversing slightly, or steering all the way to the right and moving forward slightly until you have parked correctly. Mastering parallel parking can take lots of practice! You may want to practice with larger spaces to get it right. You got this!

when exiting. How do i know i¿m not going to bump into the car in front of me if I cannot see?
@DriversEdDirect
@DriversEdDirect 11 месяцев назад
Hello, great question! If you were able to back into the space WITHOUT any adjustments, then in theory you should be able to pull out of the space safely by turning your wheel all the way to the left (away from the curb). However, if you needed to make adjustments to fit into the space, then you'll want to back up as far as you can in the parking space before you attempt to pull away from the curb. If you feel like you are still going to hit the car in front of you when you pull out, then the best way of learning to gauge the distance is by putting your car in park and getting out of your car to see how much room you have. Chances are, you'll have more room than you think when you see it from outside the car. By doing this "getting out of the car" a few times, you'll start to get the hang of how much room you really have and eventually you won't need to get out of your car to know if it's safe or not to pull out. Like anything in life, after a lot of practice and repetition, you'll get more skilled and confident. Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for this video! I got my driver’s license about 2 weeks ago and today I decided to do the parallel parking. I did it in two attempts because the first time the mirror of my car was too close to the mirror of the other car, so I made sure for the second time to keep 3 ft away and it worked!
