The thing I don't like about Parallels is that they make you pay again for every new version, then they drop support for older versions quickly. So it effectively becomes a subscription model even for the standard version.
that is very true, but i think they are doing a pretty good job. They also use significant manpower to build this software, and also to update their software as mac progresses. It makes their business sustain, however, if we have to pay yearly, then, better just to buy a windows laptop.
As of last July, I downloaded Parallels to my 2017 Macbook Pro to run Solidworks CAD for my Engineering college as a senior. I previously had purchased a HP pavilion that I thought at the time had solid specs in 2021. It died after 2 years of use and left me no choice but to use the mac. To my surprise, the Parallels/ mac combo operated way better in terms of cad than my HP ever did. Hope this carries over on the M2 Macs.
I am running my accounting programs on Parallels with my base M1 MBA. That includes Quicken and Quickbooks. It runs really well but I wish I had 16GB of memory to share between both operating systems. There are times when swap memory is working quite a bit with only 8GB. I feel the price of Parallels is worth it for me to run all of my programs on my MBA.
With every macOS release, you will have to upgrade parallel to continue support your virtualisation. One time pay off will only work if you don’t upgrade your macOS. It’s expensive
@@mythicaldragon2260 Yeah, if you want to continue running Mac VM's you've already virtualized it's still fine. But whenever I've tried to virtualize a version of Mac OS that came out after that Parallels version that's when they want you to upgrade or it fails.
@@rodhoutx Oh I see...That makes sense. I only use parallels to virtualise windows 11 on my m1 mac air. It absolutely runs like a dream. Runs like butter.
@@MichaelGGarry I'm aware, it seems it is because of an agreement between Qualcomm and Microsoft, which is supposedly ending this year. This does not change my original statement, I would still love to Boot Camp on M1/M2. Any blame you may have perceived in my original statement doesn't exist.
I tried Parallels for a year back in about 2016 but it was practically impossible to find a way to contact support and it was difficult to understand the pricing model. Realized I was better off buying both a Mac and a separate Windows computer. Probably would have stuck with Parallels if it wasn’t subscription based.
Without a doubt, one of the best reviews I have seen on such niche topic. Thank you for the holistic comparison, benchmarking and resources shared. Thank you!
i hope we see microsoft leave qualcomm soon so that we get an official release of arm windows for download/purchase just like the normal x86 versions to just install on whatever hardware, at which point we could see the return of bootcamp, but now with arm
Been using it for years and loved it UNTIL M1 came along as the Rosetta changed made it impossible to recognise a Serial USB. Parallels came to help, so did Apple and Microsoft and STILL cannot make it recognised the Com Port. Many hours and late night control of my Mac and no go. After a year, I gave up, bought the incredibly beautiful Asus Zenfold 17 and either TeamViewer or Microsoft Remote Desktop the software I need.
Way, way too expensive for my liking. If I'd pay for Parallels, I'd want license to included as the pricing already is insanely high at least for me. My suggestion is to try to use much as possible OSS software to have inter compatibility. Nice software, but quite niche user group.... Very good review though.
I have used Parallels for 2 years now and just stopped renewing because parallels no longer works with Media Monkey 5. And just a side note; Parallels makes it impossible to stop the auto renewal. I tried for hours as well as opening a trouble ticket. Did not work. They still charged my credit card. To their credit, after the charge I was able to get a e-mail through to ask for a refund which they very promptly provided. I think they might have had a glitch in the renewal/cancellation process for a bit.
You re very much wrong about the core count subject.. with 4cores, it has pretty bad Geekbench scores, but giving access to all 8 core rises the Geekbench multi score up to 7250-7350.
No and based on their forums there are no plans to rewrite VirtualBox to work on Apple Silicon. There is UTM but it requires you know how to make use of it and it can have speed issues with some older versions of Windows. But it will allow you to run Mac OS 9.
thanks for mentioning the ham software aspect. It was exactly what I was looking for. I have a separate older windows machine just to run ham stuff. Just got the m2 mini and wanted to lose a machine and consolidate with parallels. 73 ws9d
Parallels on my M1 runs Windows so much better than dual core MacBooks.... So well that it's actually feasible to use Windows only on Mac... Only issue is some software like Dropbox won't install, so you'll need to use the MacOS version...
Yes, but MS are working on emulation within ARM windows to improve app compatibility. Which means you are using an emulator inside an emulator essentially. Doesn't work well with games or similar heavy programs though.
Yes.. after Apple does their planned obsolescence thing so none of your mac apps work unless the developer updates them or they happen to work with Rosetta, then they give you a half ass Windows emulator that will own run Windows apps compiled for ARM.
@@bryanb3352 What absolute bullshit. First of all, almost everything works with Rosetta and works well. Secondly, if a developer does not update their app to run on a totally different architecture, what do you think will happen?
I wish I could buy an ARM Microsoft Windows license so I don't have the "trial". Hopefully at some point they'll finish up w/ the Qualcomm deal... I still have issues w/ the trial version when trying to watch Movies & TV items I've purchased.
Is it possible for Parallels 18 to allow Windows 11 ARM running Windows Subsystem for Android? Imagine how crazy it is to use Android on Windows 11 running on M1/M2 Macs via Parallels. Emulation within emulation = Emuception.
Its Better to use Multiboot4 from Dosek Technologies, for 4 independant OS in the same PC, cause if you have a problem with your SSD with parallel software you loose All !
Thanks. I’ve been using Bootcamp to run TurboTax on a very old Mac mini which is uncomfortably slow. I prefer the Windows version of TurboTax. Would I be able to run TurboTax with Parallels and Windows?
I have install window 11 on my MAcBook m2 how do you set full screen on windows 11. Instead I see your window 11 not full screen and there are small border at the top.
Can you have the Apple software running on one display while another OS is running on a different display at the same time? How do they avoid data corruption from running two OSs on the same PC at once?
Yes, you can have mac os on one monitor and windows on another monitor. Or run in coherence mode and have all windows and mac programs working simultaneously on the same screens, or full-screen windows on all monitors and swipe to move to mac on both monitors. You can change settings to share data between both OS or to fence them off to not see one another. Typing on the windows side to you right now.
It's an interesting alternative - although I don't believe it supports 3D acceleration so the performance might be a bit slower. I am going to play around with it and learn more.
I tried it few days ago and it seemed very nice at first (even while clunky), but then tried to install SQL Server Express and it failed every time. Then the OS wouldn't let me make changes on the system. I figured it was bc w11 was not activated but anyways it turned unusable to me. I'd say that option is a safer bet with older versions of Windows but not anything really powerfull and modern.
Parallels support says you can go to the Windows Store to buy the license, or you can use the built-in activation troubleshooter to migrate a Windows 10/11 license you may own already.
Yes, and since almost a year already. But exclusively with Windows 11. Parallel will download for you an non insider version of Windows on Arm (you cannot download it yourself). Of course you can activate it, just as you could activate it with the insider version, but this time it will not expire....
the windows activation server doesn't discriminate between x86 and arm activations, so the same product key you use to activate your gaming pc or what have you would also work to activate the virtual machine
it feels dumb to run windows like this, it might be easier, just one machine but feels like a hassle, ot like a advantage, better just have a shared folder and two machines, each one running a differen os
