The first facts I remember from Science class were that there were "amoebas" and "parameciums" and that's about all I recall.
From a bountiful plate of stagnant water, rich with a diverse universe of microscopic life, I found these paramecia.
They are single celled protozoa, covered with cilia (hair-like filaments which move them around their environment) and are commonly found in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments and in stagnant basins and ponds.
Like other ciliates, they feed on microorganisms such as bacteria, algae, and yeasts for their nutrition. The cilia help move the food into the oral groove, or vestibulum, a long, narrow depression found in the anterior side of the cell, lined with cilia which beat continuously to draw food inside the cell.
Filmed and photographed on Tomlov DM202 Max, with microscope at range of approximately 1.5 cm from the slide.
