I have used Paramo for years,. One time the Paramo analogy jacket was beginning to wet through and I was getting wet (Paramo 3rd element jacket). Really heavy driving rain. I put an extra large Paramo Furea smock over my Paramo analogy jacket and it made all the difference. I got warm and dried out. I was comfortable for the rest of the walk. Last year I tried out a new pair of membrane overtrousers instead of my Paramo analogy trousers. I got completely soaked through with sweat. I hadn't used membrane waterproofs for many years having moved over to Paramo in the 1990s after three gtex jackets failed. They would always fail within the guarantee and I would end up sending them back. I find Parmo much more comfortable. Sometimes on the odd occasion, I might get damp but I am always comfortable. I have used Buffalo clothing in the past as well and find it is more important to be comfortable rather than dry.

I've been hillwalking/mountaineering/wildcamping for over 30 years, my personal experience is that any "waterproof" coat performs well when new, but after a couple of years use and a few washes/re-proofs, they tend to fail, especially the newer ones with "environmentally friendly" so called DWR's, you can't beat flourocarbon based DWR'S for a DURABLE water repellency. Though I'll probably be demonized for pointing out that fact lol, Greta will be after me saying "how dare you?" 🤣

I was told by a friend of mine who was in the outdoor clothing trade. The first thing to do when you have purchased a waterproof jacket is to clean it and reproof. The reason why is that your purchase has been handled by many people and the natural oil off their skin can have an effect on the material. Now I don't know how true that is, but everyone from the cloth cutter to the shop assistant and customers,could add up to a lot of people handling the jacket.
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
I totally get that... and I wonder, with the jacket that failed, if its perhaps where a shop assistant has wiped it with a cloth / detergent or it had been returned to the store by someone who wiped it with a detergent based cleaner to make it look clean. 👍
@raggee1

I was told by Paramo themselves to put it through a protective wash as soon as you get it out if the package because it could have been laying around for a few months and they say to reproof after every 3 months. Have had no problems yet👍

Hi Shamus, thanks for vlog. I have had gortex jackets over the years and 15 years ago bought.my first Paramo jacket which I still have and use in the winter as it has a double storm flap. I have recently bought via their second Ebay shop a lighter jacket for both myself and my Boss (in doors). We do reproof our stuff and that is the key as you mentioned. I do get warm sometimes so I use a cheap craghopper jacket in the summer and proof that as well it does the job. They do have a high eco ethos which might be why they wanted to try and resolve the issue with a reproof. If anyone wants to upgrade you can send your old jacket in and get money off a new one and they will try and recycle the old garment. The recycling I really like. Thanks again for your films and may bump into you two one day !

The best waterproof I've had so far is a Mountain Hardwear Drystein 2 made with Dry Q Elite which they no longer do sadly, but it was bombproof and very breathable. I've lost weight so only use it when I'm layering now. Other than that an Outdoor Research Gore Tex Pro has done well, but it's sweaty. I'm about to buy a Paramo Bentu to give their fabric a try, but their are so many for and so many against their garments I guess I won't know until I try it for myself.

Agree with all yr points, particularly about water coming in off seams-- that’s a weak spot on my only Paramo jacket which otherwise works excellently. Also Buffalo Special 6 Shirt, good performer. My Goretex feels a bit damper on shoulders, despite re-proofing….and v old school Barbour + wax has its place!

Great video. Once you understand the basic science behind it, it all makes sense. Different garments for different purposes. When I’m properly out and about, comfort becomes a relative term so being wet is only a problem if it makes me cold. Which is why I love windproofs (pertex and some cottons) and proper soft shells (buffalo etc). During high intensity exercise, given how much I’m sweating, it has to be raining very hard for me to worry about getting wet from the outside.

Once again you talk sense. It is what works for you. I have used Paramo, like you for years, at least 27, the age of my eldest. The thing that I have always found to be an issue is there weight. If I know I will wear them all day then they go. If I am going to carry them then I tend to go for Goretex. One thing that I do swear by though is their waterproof trousers which, providing it is not going to be too hot are my go to if o know that it is going to be wet.
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Thank you, Ian 😊 Weight and warmth - yes they seem to be both in favour of and against Paramo - I suppose it depends on your point of view. As you say though, if you're wearing and not carrying then weight isn't the issue, but I find a mid layer is seldom needed while wearing Paramo - in summer, that warmth isn't always welcome either 😊🐶👍

I picked up quite a few bits and pieces from the small factory shop when I lived over there. The prices were so spectacularly low that I can't bring myself to buy it over here. Their clothing was great for hiking in the high moorland and mountain environments there where it was often wet and chilly, just like Dartmoor at the moment. Pajaro is one of the Spanish words for bird, maybe the jacket is named thus as it they thought it might be popular with birdwatchers. Cheers.

Another good vlog as usual. After many years of using goretex and various other tex's i have recently switched to Paramo, i went for the Velez Evolution Hybrid smock,(i prefer smocks) i got fed up with paying around $500 for a jacket and it would be done in around 3 years even with regular maintenance. Also come to the conclusion that eventually if i was in gnarly weather for extended periods sometimes very extended i was always getting wet to a degree no matter what i wear, so what i wear underneath, how quick it will dry and how much moisture it will hold seems to be the key for me but hoping my Paramo top will last longer than my other jackets, cheers.

Hi Jeremy - I like the look of the Evolution, I don't have one of those. I think, from Paramo's perspective, even if water gets in, the pump liner will continuously move it back out again 👍

Fantastic video again Shamus, I would say if you paid over £200 for a coat you can expect it to be waterproof and it was a bit disappointing that they didn't just give you a new one! What's you say about base layer choice is correct & missed by many reviewers on youtube. Your base layers must be breathable and work to wick or expel moisture or you will simply end up with a nasty wet base or mid layer that has made the environment inside your shell horrible. Buying the most expensive shell is a waste of money without attention to what you're wearing beneath. Merino & fleece are a good combination. Grid fleece is great at temperature regulation and expelling moisture. Down jackets must be clean or they won't breathe as effectively.

Hi, that was a very good review, with some useful information. I am looking for a new winter jacket. I spend a lot of time outdoors, part of my work as well as walking and cycling. I have used Gortex, event, Paramo, Ventile and a NZ jacket made by Swazi. The last one Swazi was the longest lasting garment I have used. I have been to the Rain tower test unit at Leeds University, a very helpful team. I am re-looking at Paramo Velez, this lasted ten plus years. I have reviewed, Sasta and Klättermusen. There's others. I have found the Nordic outdoor kit is made to last...it works in very harsh weather, and from what I have seen, they work and play outdoors.

I have a Paramo Alta 3 jacket which I really like although it did let water in through the zip as I probably hadn't zipped it properly over the storm flap.. quite difficult with cold wet hands and the zip itself is a tad fiddley. I also have Paramo trousers which let me down 2 weeks ago on the Preseli hills.. this was the first time they have failed. . I had just reproofed them.. I have Goretex jackets which have only let me down after about 10 years. My new Ventile smock ( Country Innovation) on the other hand is brilliant but sadly a bit heavy for backpacking.

Thanks Shamus for yet another excellent and informative video. A little like yourself, over the years I’ve been through a fair number of different waterproof stuff, starting with a rather bright red 3/4 length totally waterproof and totally unbreatherable cagoule, a must have for the outdoors person of the 60’s😂. Now, because it’s as cheap as chips ex military “Gortex” seen me through some horrible weather but needs extra care when walking up a blackthorn hedge! All well and good if you don’t mind the Camouflaged pattern! I hate to ask this but is Paromo worth the hefty price tag? Kind regards Clive from deepest Dorset.

Hi Clive - I loved my first Gore-Tex - it was half way down my thighs and had no frills. My first short Paramo was the Velez, followed by an Alta - they both lasted about 12 years and where abused beyond belief - I broke a zip in the Alta after about 7 years and Paramo fixed it FOC - They were fantastic, robust, hard wearing and worth every penny 👍 However, you do need to keep on to of the DWR and reproof from time to time 😊👍🐶

My fault, another story) and I'm impressed so far. Definitely seems less breathable than anything I've had before, but I am a fair bit fatter and unhealthier than "before times". Hello Austin - Thank you for subscribing 😊 I can't speak for the RAF element (I've been out too long). However, Nikwax Tech Wash works very well, it can be purchased as a twin pack with Nikwax TX Direct, which can then be used to reproof the jacket. In terms of just cleaning though, I used to use 'Granny's Soap Flakes' - available in supermarkets (it's pure soap) - I used to dissolve a small amount in hot water and use it in place of detergent. I'm not sure if it can clog up your washing machine, after time though 👍

Hi Michael 😊 I recently bought some new gloves, but I do have many pairs. There's just such a variety of conditions to contend with. I use running gloves mainly - just standard running gloves. When it's colder, I use cheap liner gloves and a thin=cker glove over the top - something a little more insulated. I have a pair of old waterproof mittens that I use in very wet conditions to cover my gloves. Sealskinz are very popular waterproof gloves - but then Ive never found gloves to be particularly waterproof.

I find waterproof discussion very interesting. I have used Mac in a Sac to throw in my bag in the summer for a few trips now and it works great.
