Thanks Shamus. Another very interesting video on a topic that many of us probably take for granted in the form of shove the peg in the ground and hope for the best! I particularly like the Y pegs and they have kept my 4 season tent in situ on a few wild nights. However, I always do my best to apply the first principle of survival (Protection) and try to hide my tent behind a large rock or outcrop. 😄. looking forward to the next 'Essentials' video. This is absolute gold!!! ! Guy lines and pegs, so vital yet not in the forefront of many campers and manufacturers minds alike. I need to reconsider what I’m doing armed with some of that info......especially the backstake with tube and peg. Delta thoroughly recommended, been using them for a while now for guying. Those TN laser toothpicks are an affront. Abysmal nonsense in pursuit of weight. Tremendous vid again 👍👍👍👍
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Hi Del, thank you 😊 Absolutely, the guy lines are there for dressing, they're part of the structural strength of the tent - consequently the anchor (peg) is a vital piece of the equipment 👍 I'll give Delta pegs a go one day, but double staking (as you can see) is very effective. I use a bit of a mix of pegs; Vargo titanium shepherd hooks, some Alpkit V pegs but mostly I use Y pegs, I think from Camcleats. I have some Hilleberg Y pegs as well that came with the Soulo. Having a mix of pegs means I can usually get something in the ground and I’ve been lucky I’ve not had any snapped guy-lines, just the odd slightly bent peg. I have the Delta pegs but really only use them on a big family tent as they are a bit bulky. One thing I did with the shepherd hooks was put some red heat shrink tubing on the hook end so I could find them!
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Exactly 👍 My Akto has about 4 different peg types in the bag - a tunnel tent is absolutely reliant on pegs, so I don't want to find that I can't get one solidly in the ground. I thought Delta pegs were meant for family tents too - but lots of people keep recommending them? 😊🐶

Thank you for taking the time to watch the channel, I really appreciate that 👍 I don't do recommendations or reviews. Everyone's experiences and environment will be so different from mine - I make videos about the the things that I do, in the places that I go, with the gear that I have. What I would say is that the 3F floating cloud is probably not best suited to crazy wind, storms and snow 😊👍🐶

really useful video Shamus! Had my robens tent fail on my on Friday due to wind. One guy rope snapped, then after fixing it and wind still battering the tent decided to abort the camp. Looking into getting some 22cm tube steaks but makes me concerned then that the tent fabric is then the weakest link in the chain. Do you have any insight/advice on this as to if it's better for the peg/guy to fail than them hold and result in a torn tent instead? Thanks.

I’ve never been in a position where the textile of the tent was ripping. Realistically we should be looking for shelter in dips or behind outcrops etc to diffuse the wind.

Back staking also works well with large tents, so agreed. But I am very surprised you have not used Delta Pegs? The science behind them is simple but fantastically effective. Bit of an awkward shape to carry in a backpack but recently found someone who makes triangular... made to measure bags from Hilleberg Kerlon material, very good quality.

Very interesting Shamus, I had seen you back stake before in one of your videos and was impressed as I’d never considered doing it previously. Do you find length of guy lines has any bearing on their effectiveness in severe weather? Is long most effective or short better? Is there any optimum length in your experience?
@outdoorsinspiration9284
@outdoorsinspiration9284 3 года назад
Thank you 😊 I think longer brings greater stability to be honest. Too close to the tent and it's not supporting the structure, it's just holding it down on the ground. There will be an optimum length and that's where you have to use judgement to see how much stability it is realistically adding 👍😊🐶

I have some abs plastic screw thread pegs that are brilliant in really soft peaty soil where nothing else grips- it’s a really deep thread, so offers a hell of a lot of resistance to coming out, you screw them in like a normal screw, so they keep the soil structure intact, without breaking it up. A lot of my camping is in woodland where normal pegs come out with no force at all, so these are indispensable, albeit, they are very chunky so take up more room than a bag of normal ones.

Hello Shamus I hope you and your family are well. I now am the proud owner of an MSR Hubba NX and hope to spend my first night on Dartmoor once my sleeping bag arrives. It comes with needle stakes so I thought I would buy some Y stakes to double peg if it's windy. Do you double stake every guyline?

It's a guilty pleasure watching things like this. But by far the most balanced view, albeit that really you should have looked at 3-5 pegs of each design and taken an average. But since the lovely Petra was in the video I think I'll overlook that ; -). I think I'll be packing a few extra pegs with my Soulo should the wind look to warrant it. On that topic, in your experience is there really any value in using all 12 guys with the Soulo when two guys are going to one peg? I've only had my Soulo out one and it was calm, but my thought was to go down to six plus two guys, placing the two 'extra' guys on the windward side with their own pegs. As per others, the double pegging idea is new to me too, but a simple but effective solution.
