Paramotoring - Flight 1 - A few issues/mistakes but overall, a success!

My first Paramotor flight using the Ozone Roadster 2 and a ParaJet Thor 100 Volution. Overall, a successful first flight. During this flight, I made a few mistakes and observations, all valuable lessons that I will take forward to my next and subsequent flights! CLICK 'SHOW MORE' for my notes.
- THROTTLE HESITATION ON TAKEOFF: With being a beginner, I wasn't particularly confident with going to 'full throttle', hence my take-off was a little delayed and I used valuable 'runway', but I was very conscious that I wanted to check the wing thoroughly and for it to be where I needed it before going for rotation. In future, I won't hesitate to go straight to full throttle.
- WIND DIRECTION: Before take-off, the wind was blowing directly down the field and therefore my take-off path was unobstructed and I had lots of space. However, as I powered up and started to move, I felt that the wind direction had changed and so to avoid taking the wing off course, I followed the wind direction which unfortunately meant that the building was in my path but far ahead.
- BUILDING: Despite the building appearing to be closer than it actually was, I should have gently turned after launching to avoid flying directly above it. At no point did I fear hitting it, but the GoPro FishEye effect makes it appear to be far closer than in reality.
- SEAT: I got into my seat a little too early, I should really have remained hanging with my legs 'running' until I had established a little more height - but this wing climbs so quickly so I jumped straight in!
- TURNING: I need to focus on lifting the opposite arm when turning with the other, I suspect that my initial turn to face away from the building failed because I hadn't fully raised the right-arm.
- THROTTLE HESITATION IN FLIGHT: The engine sounds hesitant but this isn't due to the engine, its me being hesitant on the finger-throttle. In future, I'll make use of the cruise-control which I had forgotten about to avoid constantly throttling up and down.
- BRAKE LINE LENGTH: On landing, my flare wasn't particularly effective due to the length of my brake lines, I should either have taken a wrap (or two) to ensure that my flare slowed me efficiently. I plan to shorten my brake handles by 2-3 inches as overall there was too much slack.
- ENGINE FAILURE: Nothing I could really have done to prevent this, we've got a list of things to check - in addition I'll be cleaning out the fuel filter which is a likely cause. I feel that I managed the situation well, I noted my position as soon as the engine failed, as well as wind direction (from flags on the ground) - I then used some left/right turns to slow myself and to lose altitude. Most importantly, I landed safely!
- ENGINE RESTART ATTEMPT: I attempted to restart the engine whilst still holding the right-brake handle, in future I know to release it, however I was worried about letting it go, I guess this is just 'maiden flight nerves' :)

That world famous Polini reliability! When will Parajet make the switch to something that actually runs without constant fiddling? Nice landing and congrats on your first flight, Ash.

Don't be so harsh on yourself, you did a great job considering it was your first flight. I have the same motor (great engine) Try adjusting your idle, don't actually think there is a fault with the motor Enjoy buddy

I know, first flight though and I didn't know any better - to be honest, I was just a bit scared of giving full throttle...but quickly realised that I had to in order to remain airborne :) I cringe as well watching back these first flights :)

Great job, looked like an enjoyable short flight! FYI I've had x 3 flights and x 2 engine outs... its really not that much of an issue. The take off towards/over the building would have had my palms sweating though! Lots more power next time. Fly safe :o)

Thanks dude - yeah the building wasn't ideal but I've learnt from that maiden and definitely won't be overflying such obstacles again :)

toughplum out of curiosity, have you found the root cause of your engine-outs? 2 cuts in only 3 flights is a pretty high ratio and isn't normal?

i think it was running on rich side and idle was too low thus stall...quarter throttle and pull start hard should have worked...any landing you can laugh at and walk away is a great landing :)

Possibly although I gave the engine a thorough stripdown and clean after this flight (as I bought the unit second hand), since then its been running beautifully! Enjoy my series of videos, my first 16 flights are in this playlist :)

Yep listening to it again you are messing with the rev's and it died, When I am flying I always maintain a constant pressure with the rev's..

Thanks for the feedback Darragh Foley, are you certain that it died because of that? Shouldn't modern 2-strokes like these be able to cater for changes in throttle position without dying suddenly as it did?

Just by going your video yes!! Don't overanalyze the problem. Just adjust the carbie until you hit the swear spot ie you can do high revs then drop off etc etc do this on the ground. I was one of the first people in the uk to get the 100 I know it inside out, if you have any technical question let me know.

Darragh Foley sounds good - when you say adjust, which mixture control? Also I'm looking for advice on how to remove the Flash Starter so that I can overhaul it?

Sergeant Despite what a few people say about polini they got it right with the 100, the 200 got a lot of slack due to blowing many pistons, anyways.. If i was you I would ditch the flash starter, google it to read why. Its easy to adjust the idle on the motor. On the carbie you have two adjustments (have you got the manual)

Darragh Foley I've been asking for advice from others and they're saying to leave the mixture/tuning and that it wouldn't be related to it as it ran perfectly on the ground - what do you think?
