Parashat Bamidbar opens with a description of how the people of Israel camped around the Tabernacle. One of the details that the Torah emphasizes is the flags of each tribe. What is the meaning of the flags and why were they given to the people of Israel? Do they have a historical, national, or religious significance?

There is a fascinating insight into flags or emblems as means of identity. In Ancient Rome, the eagles were the army's emblems of identity for each battalion, proudly conserved in battle and regarded as a disasterif the enemy captured the eagle which was a priority to regain. The eagles were symbols of war. For the Jewish people, they were proud symbols of identity, of place, tribe, family and belonging. As such, they were emblems of peace.
