On February 18 Neuropeculiar, within the frame of AUTCamp Off, hosted Alice Scavarda, Katjuscia Zof, Tiziana Naimo and Andrew Dell'Antonio to comment on the contents of Dr. Scavarda's book "Pinguini nel deserto. Strategie di resistenza allo stigma da Autismo e Trisomia 21" ("Penguins in the desert - Strategies of resistance to stigma from Autism and Trisomy 21") and to reflect on parents' role, particularly in their relationship with the diagnosis and with professionals. The meeting was moderated by Alice Sodi.
The panelists offered many useful insights, which we promise to deepen later, such as medicalization of everyday life, so-called "courtesy stigma" that hangs over the heads of people who are in relationship with an autistic person, such as parents and siblings, but also the possibility for parents to include themselves in embracing differences regardless of their neurological structure, the concept of "parental disability" and much more that you can also read in this detailed report by Andrew Dell'Antonio:

Alice Scavarda
Sociologist, research fellow at the University of Turin, where she teaches General Sociology at for university students in Nursing. Since her doctoral thesis, which she expanded into the volume "Pinguini nel deserto. Strategie di resistenza allo stigma da Autismo e Trisomia 21" ("Penguins in the desert - Strategies of resistance to stigma from Autism and Trisomy 21") , she has been interested in Critical Autism Studies and neurodiversity.
Andrea/Andrew Dell’Antonio
is a resident of cold Texas; his daughter and son are autistic, while his diagnosis is ADHD. He teaches music history at the university level and has been involved in neurodiversity activism for about a decade.
Katjuscia Zof
Mother of Ariel, a non-speaking autistic child, founder of the blog The princess and the Autism from which she chronicles life experiences with Ariel, important perspectives.
