Her parents say after recovering from strep throat, Alexia Baier, 4, started throwing violent tantrums, endangering her and her family's safety. WATCH THE FULL EPISODE OF 20/20 HERE: abc.tv/2LI5lwE
@mistyhxrizon dude his comment has nothing to do with gacha youre even more stupid if you attack people who have a bad reputation because of their fandom
In rare cases of strep throat (PANDAS) it can cause your immune system to start attacking your brain. Her symptoms match almost perfectly. Edit: grammar
Patrick Junior I don’t mean to be rude but there is no need to bring religion into this. Everyone has different beliefs and it’s not okay to pressure others 🙃
I love how they really tried to help the child instead of calling her a brat. I have anger issues and my family deals with it by making me even angrier so that I will be "used to it". Made me feel depressed and mentally abused. I hope this girl feels better soon.
you don't deserve that and I am sorry you deal with that. when I was in my young teens I was really angry and sad all the time. begged my mom to take me to therapy but she never did. I did grow out of my anger, but I was sad for so long and had never learned how to deal with hard things, so I ended up doing some awful things for a few years. thankfully I'm sober and much better now. idk how old you are, but if you're under 18 there are therapists who will talk to you for free. call your local health department (if you're in USA), hopefully in other countries there are similar services. or talk to your school nurse or counselor, they can probably connect you with someone to talk to as well,
Y does everyone deny discipline. Even God disciplines. U hv to love yourself too (parents) not j others and by showing that u can help get the message across that the child is not a God to b worshipped at the cost of the safety or self of others and that the only option is to hv humanity towards others. Love is not hard to grasp for the child either. Being ill doesn't excuse anyone from being ruthless towards innocent loving beings (the parents) with no accountability.
I might have adhd or autism . Back then , I threw bad mental meltdowns and tantrums , what made it worse is that someone was always recording me.. It’s still in my photos.
I am so happy she was diagnosed! My 7 year old suddenly woke up like a different kid. He was diagnosed with PANS/PANDAS. 30 days of antibiotics and OCD meds and I have my baby back. Parents if your kiddo suddenly changes overnight. You don’t recognize them push the doctors to find the cause. Many doctors don’t know of or even believe this is real. THIS IS VERY REAL. Don’t stop until you find a doctor that can help your kid. I wouldn’t have believed it had we not lived it. May God’s grace lead you to doctors who can help.
My sister has pandas. She was also "diagnosed" around 7 years old. She is now a teenager and still deals with symptoms but has grown so much now that we know what she is.
You make a great point on noticing behavior changes because I think a lot of people from the outside would (understandably but incorrectly) assume this was just the child’s behavior and she needed some different parenting techniques but if your child is having any kind of erratic or sudden change in behavior, there’s probably an underlying cause that can’t just be explained away as a “behavior problem.” This would be so scary as a parent, especially the suicidal thoughts in such a young child. I’m glad at least that videos like this can succeed in bringing some awareness.
My daughter is now 29 years old. She was the first child in the USA diagnosed with PANDAS .. Sadly she never recovered but is a strong young woman. She deals with the damage the disease did to her with courage. Hopefully her treatment helped. They didn’t know how to fix my daughter since she was the first. Antibiotics. Years of seizures hospital mental illness. Big hug hope they get her positive results.
Why 1998? My son, the same. Threatens my life many times daily, 87 attempts. I'm now disabled due to his hands. Begging for help ... deaf ears. Two pastors thought he may be demonic. Why 1998?
I feel so sad for Alexia because this is not her fault. I also feel for the parents, family and friends. I pray for knowledge, peace and healing for Alexia and her family. Xx
The behavior is alarming because you can easily tell that this isn't a personality issue. The first worry you have is a behavior altering medical issue (like a tumor or chemical imbalance). It doesn't always have to be a trauma that causes something like this. This is a case where you have to bypass the behavior to find the issue instead of being reactive to it.
If a person isn't what they say and do, then what are they? May as well just release all 7 million prisoners in this country. After all, "it's not their fault."
@@josephinetracy1485 Did I even once talk about criminal behavior? That is not even close to what I am talking about right now with this child. I am talking about adolescent behavior that swings.
@@catnoscat Once again, a simpleton who doesn't understand. I'm not talking about criminal behavior. I'm talking about children with behavioral swings. Go back to flipping burgers and leave this topic for the actual adults.
As somebody who suffered from volatility as a kid due to a chemical imbalance in my brain and autistic traits, my heart goes out to Alexia. I was compared to Jekyll and Hyde myself as well. Chances are she can barely help her behavior and it's scary for her too.
And the worst part is in my opinion, people would expect the mother to be able to handle her because she is a special needs teacher, but the biggest difference is, after a hard day at work she could go home to her well-behaved, neurotypical children. She had a break. It is a completely different story when you are dealing with it 24/7. As someone who worked in a care facility who dealt with behaviors, it is unbelievably frustrating to handle destructive and violent behaviors and what gets me through those shifts with my head on straight was knowing I could go home and decompress. I feel sooo bad for that mother.
Felicity Ramsey I know. I’m just saying that people are saying that some people commented about beating her with the belt but there isn’t any comment about it.
**manic screams** "Imagine this is your house..." That's exactly what goes on in my house EDIT: bruh why’s my comment blowing up all of a sudden a whole fucking year later lmao
Lord have mercy, so sorry that this has happened & that baby girl is going through is. I'm gonna keep PRAYING FOR HER. My hugs, love from South Carolina.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️
My five year old nephew through a tantrum for over an hour because we told him he couldn't put a fake tattoo on his face ( he was going to preschool in 2 hrs). The interviewer clearly isn't around young kids alot, is she?
My daughter had problems like this, violent tantrums that lasted hours. She has just graduated in a medical degree! I always supported her and love her very much, it was hard for years on the whole family and it has taken its toll on my mental health but I am very proud of her. The younger teenage years were the worst, but tantrums started very young. I think a lot of it had to do with high intelligence and frustration that her body would not do what her mind wanted it to do, simply because of age limitations.
I am a clinical social worker and specialize in OCD. We will occasionally get kids with PANDAS. Some insurances won't recognize the disorder and so won't pay for the very expensive treatment. Therefore, some families have to go without the treatment their child desperately needs or go into debt because the goal for insurance companies is to figure out ways to not have to pay for services.
I have the same issue, at he age of 7, I got diagnosed with a severe case of strep throat. I got it 8 times in a month. I soon after became someone else entirely. I had behavior issues and had to be taken out of school. I hated therapy and medication. I’m almost 15 now, and am much better. Pandas is difficult, and the medicine never works, so I feel for this baby girl.
3:06 is one of the strongest cries I've seen from a mother. She pushed that insecurity all the way back after she let it out. My mother had the same exact cry when I was going through severe depression for years and refused to talk to anyone. Makes me tear up just seeing another mother go through that feeling
She needs church, carry out to a Pentecostal church let a pastor prayed for her its a demon spirit pleaz this is serious, we r spirit being n there is n enemy also there is a powerful God who love her n wants to deliver her

What do you care if I laugh at another person's comment? By the way... Shouldn't you be pissed at the original poster of the comment, and not the people replying to the comment? It isn't my fault you have no sense of humor. I never said the child's condition was funny. I thought the comment about mom calling a priest for an exorcism funny. Jessie Stoss I just asked a simple question. I certainly didn’t mean to upset you so deeply. I think calling me a psychopath , pathetic, miserable, whiner seems extreme.
@@theresabrown1272 You didn't upset me at all. I know better than to let a troll get to me. There is no question to answer, since there's clearly no evidence of me laughing or saying it was funny. Reading comprehension must not be your strong suit.
I was a child like Her. I used to shout out at people, give my parents and teachers a hard time, through stuff around the room to get attention. Nobody cared I was sad or angry, My parents didn’t do anything. They put me in special ed, and the teachers were very emotionally, abusive, locked me in a small room. Nobody cared
I think I can kind of understand what she's going through. Children are smarter than we give them credit for. I think she knows that this kind of behavior is wrong, but she also cannot control it which lead to a lot of frustration for her. Therefore the "explosion" or desire to hurt oneself, others because it's all so overwhelming for a child and she cannot just keep it in. I hope she gets the help she needed, and kudos to the family for genuinely trying to help her instead of blaming her
I have what she has I've grown out of the early stages and now it's just really bad depression and the comments are so offensive... It's something called "pandas" so please stop..
I developed PANDAS when I was 8. I’m 51 now. I had strep several times in a row and then everything you see here started. But no one was diagnosing PANDAS then. Instead they told my parents that I was just being a brat and needed more discipline. 😟
FOR REAL! Everything about this situation is suspicious... I don't think she would be having "temper tantrums" if her parents just try to understand her child more. NOT PUT HER ON FUCKING LIVE T.V.!
@@justafellowsamaritan7845 She legit has PANDAS and they’re acting like “she’s so naughty” she can’t help it! I’ve heard some updates a little while back when she was 6 and she is now having hallucinations and really wanting to kill herself. But I’m sure her parents recording it and talking about it online isn’t going to make it any better.
Reading through all this comment section makes me feel like humans are so dumb. She's obviously suffering from PANDAS which got activated by her strep infection. Yet, people be like she needs to be a disciplined with a belt or like she needs to get exorcised. So dumb.
@@MelodyToonie Yeah. People call themselves good and understanding while rather being judgemental and delusional as much as possible to the reality of things. Hypocrisy kills humanity slowly. Everybody these days just cares about taking advantage of others' weakness.
It’s so lucky that she has such loving and supportive parents, one of them being a special needs teacher. Many kids like this are just labelled as brats and written off by their parents and teachers and locked away in institutions or care facilities for mentally unstable kids and kept on cocktails of medications to “zombify” them. I’m absolutely blown away by the sheer empathy and maturity in the family, the sister didn’t blame her and suspected something had happened to her brain and the mother even wondered if it was something she had done wrong. Many parents couldn’t even face considering the possibility of a child acting out somehow being due to their own wrongdoing! The world would be an infinitely better place if more people had the same maturity, kindness and empathy as Alexia’s family. Turns out she has PANS/PANDAS a condition that causes brain inflammation following a strep infection. Who knows how many other “naughty” kids out there are also suffering from a medical condition.
The kids in her class watching her throw everything at them and everywhere: 👁💧👄💧👁 (Edit: I've never gotten this many likes before what the heck, tysm! Xx
I was like this as a kid. It terrifies me to think that I ever was this bad. I was dealing with a mother who had NPD as well as lashing out from meltdowns and sensory overload ( I am Autistic but only just discovered this at 28). A large factor in my bad behavior was dealing with my mother; she was cold, uncaring, and to this day puts her desires above the health and will being of her children. I feel for this little girl and I hope she gets the helps she needs. It often unfortunately is the parents that cause their kids to lash out. This little girl likely is not having all of her needs met.
I believe it PANS or PANDAS, but it’s important to never discount the spiritual aspect of things in this world!! Jesus even cast out demons. I would take her to a good Lyme, mold and PANS literate doctor, but also to a quality pastor. Praying for this poor child. My heart breaks for her suffering. 🙏🙏🙏
My husband works 60-70 hours a week, and has to travel to different sites around the southeast. He calls his kids everyday, multiple times a day. He calls me to ask how I'm doing and ask about how the kids are, ask how it was getting them ready for school, did they eat breakfast ok, and after he gets back to the hotel he calls and talks to us all again. He plays online games with the older 2 before bed while talking with them on video chat. Friday night, he gets home as fast as he can, showers, and gives every second of his weekend to the kids. He even leaves 3am monday morning rather than sunday night (and stay in a hotel) because the kids want him there for bedtime. It irritates me that the dad's like "i don't have the time to talk to you everyday..." After watching Supernanny, i noticed dads often check out when kids behavior gets hard and they use their job as an excuse. You don't work so much that you don't have the time to know what's going on with your kids and to be a partner to your wife.
@@MishaSkripach how can you helicopter parent when you're gone 5 days a week? What is wrong with you? He is calling to be a part of their lives. I feel very sorry for you.
Strep is a lot more formidable than we think. Bacteria can do a number on the nervous system, especially if the immune system isn't mature enough. Another disorder similar to PANDAS is Chorea, but it's instead caused by antibiotics, which I find both bizarre and interesting.
kly rand note this person said tried. I don't think you read that right. It's clear the child needs help, but even still....she needs to be disciplined
kly rand you know, all I said was discipline. Chill. U said abuse, I didn't. Read. Discipline can vary due to the types of parents. It can pretty much be giving a stern and strong command. Like I said, yes she needs help and I am glad she did, but also trying to set discipline (it doesn't have to be spanking. It's whatever works for the child) DOES help the child get a slight understanding of what's right and wrong. Also I advise you to not call someone ignorant and uneducated for a simple thought. It doesn't make you very worthy of respect when you're in an argument. If she did not have a mental issue, I would spank her. Abuse also means hitting your child regularly out of no reason. Spanking is something to teach the child of what is wrong. No u don't just spank them, but you explain and teach what is wrong. But every kid works differently. Are we done now?
Ryan Depaulo: Degenerate Gambler why did she act like that, I'm not saying that in a rude way but she needs to learn how to control herself and your wife and you aren't doing anything wrong it's her behavior!!

"Strep throat is a bacterial infection, most commonly associated with sore throat in children. ... But strep can also lead to serious psychological and neurological complications known as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections, or PANDAS."
This reminds me of the fact that I started showing heavy symptoms of OCD less than a month after getting bad food poisoning while on vacation. Now I'm diagnosed with OCD.
i haven't watched the next part, but i'm on the verge of tears. i'm 14 years old, and when i was 5 years old i had strep throat, leading to a terrible infection that both me and my mom had. we had large pustules on our legs, and also on my face. my mom did not like taking western medicine so my mom put bandaids over the bumps and thought we'd be fine. 5 months later they never went away so she took me to the doctor and we got antibiotics. a few weeks later my behavior totally changed. watching this video, alexia mirrored me. i have never seen someone act the same as me. the past few months my parents and i decided i have autism, and im going to get tested soon. i'm going to watch the remaining parts to see if it was possible something else...
She needs behavioral corrections with a good behavioral therapist. I am one. No beating the child. She need good intervention. Special needs teachers have no training for that in particular.
Jamie Taylor: Not sure where you got 4 from, lol......As usual, most know it alls don't listen. @ 0.34 in the story simple states that she is 4 years!!!

I feel like there are some cases where a person’s life and the lives of those around them would be better if they were institutionalised. It’s an environment where people are equipped to help them and keep themselves from harm. He’s safe in there and you’re safe outside. You can still visit him if need be.
Im a single dad of 10 year old girl who is just like this. I don’t have anyone else to help me deal with it. I work 6 nights a week on third shift. Some people don’t understand the nightmare. They don’t understand how hard it is when they get into these episodes and they just can’t seem to get themselves out. You try everything. Try staying calm, try holding or hugging, try raising your voice, try punishing, try incentivizing, etc. nothing works. Sometimes it’s over nothing. Sometimes I just need her to text her grandma quick to tell her we’re on the way. Sometimes she just needs to get dressed for school. Sometimes her phone isn’t charged. You have no idea what’s going to set them off, how long it’s going to last or how it’s gonna end. I’m so glad I’m not the only one because some days I feel so defeated. And also, my daughter is autistic and that’s why she is this way. It isn’t PANDAS.

Even though Alexia got better and grew out of PANDAS and once again went back to the happy and kind kid she always was. She stilled had long term affects of PANDAS. she has permanent cognitive damage but she is doing fine and is on no medication.
Video: This little girl was a normal, well-behaved child but contracted an illness that damaged her brain. Comments: *sHe NeEDs a BeLt!* Edit: It's been a while since I checked this but I'll just say to all the people who say "white people are too nice" or "she would never act like this around a black/Mexican/Asian family" are wrong in many ways. There *are* white people who beat their kids, they're called rednecks and I was raised by them. And I was beaten with a belt but it never taught me good behavior or respect, it taught me fear and discipline and it definitely affected me negatively. There were even times where I didn't know why I was punished and expected to know but it was never explained to me. And stop bringing race into issues like this. Whenever I see the "[insert minority race] beat their kids" argument, it doesn't make me change my mind because, like I said before, all races have beaten their kids and second; all your argument does is tell me that minorities are abusive towards children. What kind of argument is that? Are you seriously trying to turn everyone into a racist with this?
@@emmanuelchannel221 that's fucking idiotic, she has PANDAS a disorder, plus, hitting your child to "learn their lesson" it isn't gonna help, so as a wise gen z I saw on the internet would say, I will kindly say no❤
As someone who had a few strep throats when I was really young I remember I got one so bad I had to be hospitalized and given a shot and specifically after that one is when my painful OCD/ADHD journey started. It changed my brain pattern and way of thinking. Not only till 2 years ago did I get therapy because of mental health stigma in my family and unfortunately i suffered all those years alone. I was reading up how there’s a connection between brain function and adolescent strep throat. I now have autoimmune issues (possible disease) and ever since then suffered a lot of trauma and anxiety over the years. My OCD is now manageable by 95% but i think I couldve curved a lot of stress and pain if I had known much sooner and gotten the proper help. This poor girl needed evaluation preferably brain scans and professional treatment.

Update on Alexia’s story: Alexia was successfully diagnosed with PANDAS. PANDAS is a disorder that causes the immune system to attack the brain whenever you get infections, leading to irrational, erratic behaviour (sometimes also physical symptoms such as seizures, but this didn’t happen in Alexia’s case), and is initially specifically triggered by strep bacteria. Source: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lGNH2d_9MWM.html For a while, she got the right antibiotics which got her back to normal.
