He became possessive, verbally abusive and racked up insane levels of debt on our credit cards / emptied the bank accounts. Changed passwords. When I confronted him he said “what are you going to do? Leave me”?. You bet I did. Then he tried to ruin my life to prevent me from leaving. I ended up with nothing but a suitcase and sleeping on the floor at a DV centre. If you legitimately don't think you owe on a loan DON'T PAY. "They were harassing me." "I just wanted them to leave me alone." "I felt bad." Paying any money on a loan is an acknowledgment of the debt. I personally don't think the $1900 was a loan originally. The plaintiffs said so themselves that they knew the defendants couldn't afford much. Had the daughter-in-law NOT paid that $100, the judge would have dismissed that part of the case as well. She nearly did it already because she already believed it was BS. The plaintiffs are miserable people. Your son is already going through a separation after probably being pushed into getting married by the mom, who damn near planned the whole thing, and now you're suing him? Sounds like a good way to lose a son to me.

Those kids needed to go to the courthouse on their own to get married if they wanted to. Those parents are overly involved in their grown son's life. Renting is not throwing away money. There are smarter ways to invest, but there are equally smart reasons to rent. Cut the cord, everybody!

I've seen this so many times where a couple live together very amiably THEN get married and it all falls apart. I think the feeling of being 'tied' to one another is a burden they can't accept. The adage "the looser the knot, the tighter the bond" springs to mind. Then, of course, the horrendous expense of doing a wedding also plays a big part of this stress 😏

Champagne thoughts on a beer wallet - they both have grandiose ideas and zero funds to fuel them. If they had bought a house, they would have never made a mortgage payment. Why should they when mommy and daddy open their wallet for him at every turn? The Ps waited about 18 years too long to teach their son how to be independently financially responsible. I suspect her parents did the same. They’ll never learn now. Too set in their ways.

@AmandaTexas
@AmandaTexas 2 месяца назад
@@kimm6589 That's true, but they already don't have the money for the purchase of the house. Or the wedding. Or to pay the past due bill. And they probably wouldn't be able to qualify for a mortgage through a traditional lender, which is why they had an option to buy the house through their lease, "real estate contract". So a rental with option to purchase, if I heard them correctly. Those arrangements usually involve high interest rates. Now throw in an unexpected $10,000 furnace replacement, or the sewer line breaks between the street and the house (two of my personal fears lol). I'm not saying they can't but they probably shouldn't.

Its really sad to see parents, who are clearly ageing, and who have done so much for their children go through so much mental anguish. I agree that these parents should probably not have dragged their son (along with their family’s dirty laundry) onto national television. But I guess the desperation of the situation must have led them to do this. I can see a lot of people blaming this mother, and some of the assumptions people are making could be true - but we don’t know that. We don’t know what really happened and what anyone’s intensions were. What I do know (being in my early 40s and who has parents in their late 70s / early 80s) is that I would never make my parents so unhappy and disappointed that they would have to drag me to court. We need to respect our parents and instead of taking money from them - actually look after them in all manner - physical, mentally and financially support them if required. Even if parents are willing to help kids financially to kick start their lives (they are only doing it from the goodness of their hearts - it’s not business for them)…we should always consider that as a loan of some sort and we should repay it back in some form or manner. If I can’t afford to have a big wedding (because I am living pay check to pay check) - I would not be borrowing and accepting handouts for a big wedding, from anyone.

My sister got married summer of 88, the marriage was over & done before Thanksgiving, my mom & grandparents pretty much paid for everything. It was just a very small wedding, “rehearsal dinner” was the Dairy Queen across the street. My mom nor my grandparents even DREAMED of suing for return of money spent. You can have a nice wedding, nothing fancy, for $100-$200!! I know because my son has been married twice & both weddings were within that range. That included food & the wedding dress for the first wedding.
