Paris also makes many Parisians sick, not to mention the other French. Nothing "romantic" about Paris. Prospective visitors need to understand that Paris is no setting for a novel but rather a disaster area. Take it from a Frenchman.

The first time I was in Paris I was at a train station talking to a Parisian who had just been mugged by a group of North African migrants. His face was bleeding and his eye glasses were broken. I asked him if he needed help, he said no. He then noticed I was a tourist and told me he hated his country and that the government didn’t care about native French. That was back in 2012, and I can only imagine things have gotten a lot worse since then…. It’s a shame committed national/cultural suicide. Pathetic

Actually, importation of culture from other regions have existed since ancient human civilizations started & intercontinental trade or marauding happened. Without Anglo-Saxons with North Germanic influences, they wouldn't create Britain, along with France's Normandy influence in English royalty, i.e. House of Normandy setup William the Conqueror lineage of England's Kings & Queens in the Middle Ages. Also, Vikings has been raiding Britain a lot that time too. So, Viking culture did eventually influence the Brits then. Coming back to France...if you insist on "no importation of (foreign) culture", how do you tell your ancient European ancestors what they did was B.S.? How do you untangle centuries-old blood in you already mixed with other cultures in your DNA? I'm trying to say, none of us can really stop importation of foreign cultures into our homelands. Our ancestors had done it, & so other people will continue it in the future. But I believe, there needs to be a limit to how much culture you want to import from other cultures - without forgetting/eroding your own identity & roots of your Motherland. I think the only way to solve this over-immigration issue is limit the number of refugees & immigrants coming into the country. And seriously educate them to learn the foreign host country's language & way of life. These immigrants need to know they cannot act & think like Kings in their country they've left behind, and have to behave like good guests instead, i.e. cut down on their entitlements.

In the UK, the people voted to leave the EU and gave the Tories a massive majority to do something about it, but the elected politicians just gave us more of the same. We stayed in a gorgeous apartment that belonged to an artist & her daughter who were traveling elsewhere in Europe that week. The neighborhood was not distinguishable from my own then. I live in the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in New York, Jackson Heights. It had nothing but calling card businesses, smoke shops, various grocery stores selling the same foods I am used to that come from Pakistan. It was the dirtiest streets I’ve ever seen, garbage piled everywhere. There was also a lot of youth scoping trains, trying to pick pocket. The beautiful Paris apartments across mine, were visible in the evening light. They were destroyed, filled with piles of rubbish and hanging lines of clothing. It was truly depressing. As a Frenchwoman, I just have to agree with everything you say. Most French people know it and agree, except for that tiny wealthy minority who lives in the the most expensive districts at the center of the city and who are persuaded that everything about them is good and "progressive". Most of them are either boomers from the so-called "May 68" era which brought about the monstrosity everyone saw at the Olympics or the leftist kids educated by that same pseudo-elite whose values are just a devious way to claim a "higher morality". Sadly, boomers are currently the largest White population in France by now, for many reasons, which is also a huge problem for Slavic countries as well. What's worse, those same Parisians who have left Paris for the reasons you've mentioned have moved to smaller cities like Nantes, Bordeaux, Lyon or Strasbourg and, because they always vote left, these ctities are slowly but surely becoming plagued with migrants, modern architecture and overall chaos like in Paris. And once the city is no longer livable, they just change and continue that same cycle forever and now they're going abroad to do the exact same thing, like in Switzerland, Luxemburg, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands for instance.

I visited Paris in '82. It was already then the rudest and dirtiest city I had ever been to. It was already then overrun by north Africans and was an open toilet for both dog and human wastes. The French incessantly smoked in restaurants, brought dogs in to eat with them even if others were allergic to dogs, let their dogs eat off their plates in the restaurants and all this while not one of the "Frenchmen", if any even existed back then, would help a tourist by saying so much as one word in English. 42 years ago I proclaimed to myself that France was a country in decline and that it would never recover. Sounds like my prophesies were correct.

Jean, just curious, have you encoutered at all the relatively recent phenomena of Brits moving to rural France, looking for abandoned properties for sale, or otherwise places that need a lot of renovation or restoration, and are thus relatively or even very cheap compared to properties in the UK? Everything from simple farm cottages all the way up to full chateau estates. It has become popularised by YT channels such as Escape to Rural France, Sean's World, Life of Ryan, Chateau Life, The Pethericks, How to Renovate a Chateau, Bordeux Life and many others (though Ryan grew up in France so his perspective is a little different, but his MO is the same, he bought a terraced house for 15K Euro, ie. 18K with fees included). Channels like Sean's World and Sean's Universe often show rural French life to be of a nature that Britain once had but has largely been lost; the village-wide Vide Grenier, Brocantes, Emmaus, etc. It reminds me of rural Wiltshire in the 1970s, where I lived as a child. Even at the higher end of the market, websites such as Le Nail have to a Brit what appear to be incredible value properties listed, such as the 17th century mansion house estate in the Mayenne department for only 600K Euro; or for those willing to put in the time & effort, a 19th century 4-bedroom house in the Deux-Sevres department for only 275K Euro, set amid almost 6 acres of land, with a lake, outbuildings, etc. Honestly if it weren't for family ties and practical matters, I would consider such a move, though only if I learned French first (which would be life come full circle perhaps, as my father was a French teacher long ago). I have a friend in London who is moving to southern France very soon, he already speaks fluent French and thus has that advantage. He said London is lost, and he desires the better weather as he approaches retirement. I found a French property market report which stated that due to the nature of French inheritance law, there are now some 2.8 million abandoned or derelict properties around France, but at any one time only about 8% of them are on the market, though one can strive to find those not listed by searching locally, knocking on the doors of neighbours, asking around local shops, etc. I used Google Street View to have a look at a typical random village (Mainsat, in the Creuse department) and indeed it has a large number of empty houses, some in such a bad state the roof has collapsed, yet only a few have for-sale signs visible. I just wondered to what extent rural or small-town native French people are aware of this trend and its rising popularity, and it also made me ponder, why are the urban and suburban ethnically native French not doing the same thing? Or perhaps they are but the supply side of the market is so high, a few Brits coming over barely makes a dent. Either way, it means the cities become ever more devoid of native French, creating a bizarre divide between the urban and non-urban areas, which is already very much the case in the UK. There are caveats of course, those such as Dan (of Escape to Rural France) and Ryan have commented frequently on the high cost of building materials in France, likewise the complexities & difficulties of product availability, but even so, the appeal of rural area life is doubtless regarded as more than worth it, though one can't escape what happens at a national level in terms of the fallout from leftist state economic and other policies. In the US there are what one could regard as equivalent channels, though with a more offgrid leaning, such as Bushradical, The 2nd Empire Strikes Back, Betting on Alaska, Truck House Life, Girl in the Woods, etc., probably because land availability and less restrictive laws in parts of the US mean this approach has greater appeal, again if one is willing to put in the work required, and can cope with the caveats of location (such as in Alaska).

Then we were taken to the hotel which was on the outskirts and there didn't seem to be many native French and it felt scary we were only 11 and especially the girls had a bad feeling about it. There is also a big French diaspora in London but it is mostly for business reasons, I think most of them came for good jobs in their sectors that happened to be there (and since it's next door to Northern France with the Channel tunnel...). For now, most frustrated Parisians flee to other big French cities, namely Bordeaux, Lyon, Lille, Nantes, etc. But those are becoming little Paris because of them (high prices and immigrants coming there too). If you're American, it's just the same as that proverbial Californian that flees to Texas only to export the Californian ways that he fled in the first time... When my wife and I took the train from the Paris Airport to the city center we were shocked at how much we missed the relative safety and beauty of the South Bronx.

When I visited Rome and saw the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel I spontaneously burst into tears. It was somewhat overwhelming to say the least.

I remember that. It's also fun once you shake the initial awe, turn around and watch the latest tourist walk in as their eyes hit the ceiling and their jaws just drop while they are paralyzed. Amazing experience.

I am an Italian American. I've always wanted to visit Italy... My husband said I'd be disappointed because Of the exalted view of I have Of Italia, for me, Italy is caught in a time-warp circa 1580... It is, therefore, a beautiful dream. I started doing some research on the Italy of today and it is far different country than I imagined and my mother described. That isn't a disease. There are two realities... the one of 2024 and the one in our minds, between, our temples. I really do think my heart would break if It was an entire disappointment. It's not an illness, it's what happens when our dreams and exterior reality don't mesh at all... there are no similarities.

I had been to France as teenager in the 1989. I went back as an adult in 2000. I was shocked in 2000 how much things had changed for the worse. Paris was already completely flooded with foreigners. It has only become worse over the decades.

You forgot Lima Syndrome. Which is the opposite of Stockholm, where the hostage taker starts to have feelings for their hostages. But maybe that's just feeling guilty for being a POS

LOL when I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s a disease could be found under a microscope as it was an organism. My school teacher did not like it when I asked what the disease of “alcoholism “ looked like under a microscope. Now nearly everything is a disease or syndrome, or “illness”😂.

Well, that's what decades of socialist and a decade of Anne Hidalgo rule does to a place.

We really need to get rid of all these socialist ways of living we can't sustain ourselves like this.
