Paris Is Burning is a landmark 1990 documentary film directed by Jennie Livingston that explores the underground subculture of ballroom dance and performance in the 1980s among New York City's African American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities. Although things are better now than how things were at the time this was filmed, and at the time that Ms Corey killed and mummified that person, at the time, the LGBTQ+ community wasn't protected as swiftly or as thoroughly by police as they should've been. They had a lot more self protecting to do then than now.

I love what Dorian Corey said about how you’re too busy trying to survive in a big city that you don’t have time to hate. I grew up in the closet in a small town in NC. Then moved to DC at 22. It was like day and night.

Dorian’s wisdom rings true to this very day. Especially about the TV being the mom and the dad which now it’s probably Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat but it’s the same deal.

@@kachi9293Thanks for the insight , I’d never heard that version of someone planting the body there after Dorians death , with or without her permission, but it does sound likely!! Either that or the widely perceived story of her defending herself against an assailant, romantic or otherwise!! But no way it was there when she moved there , how could she not notice the smell ??? Also , did you watch Pose , because trust if one had to move the body it could and WOULD be done !! Period 😂

I appreciate this. I watched PIB When I was a teen and fell in love with all the lives displayed. Beautiful creatures who were ahead of their time. I rewatch PIB every few years and cherish these sweet souls and often wonder how they would have absolutely SMASHED it in our times. TY for sharing this

What Dorian said about reading as opposed to television I Absolutely agree. I've read every day since I was 6 and people were always so surprised that I read because I love and chose to read. If I had to choose between television and books the Books are going to win every time. Holding a actual book in my hand was like I owned a piece of the author's endeavor.

This really reminds me of Frantz Fanon's Wretched of the Earth. In Chapter 1, he describes dances that colonized people attend where they are spiritually possessed and dispossessed ,or become something else for a short time, over the course of the dance. And he wrote that book in the 60s.

We will never know what happened. What we do know is that the guy in the closet was a violent criminal. Early 90s NYC cops wouldn't believe a damn thing a black drag queen says. If I were in Dorians shoes I'd do the same thing. You robbed the wrong house tonight.

The mummy they found in her closet had been her boyfriend and had been missing for about 25 years, so he had been curled up in that suitcase since shot in the head. - there was also a bottle cap from the 60's inside the bag too. It wasn't discovered till after she died .

Yes. I saw an old video of RuPaul when he was young....he was in a rather huge apartment, with roommates, and the rent was mentioned.... about $175 a month. The place is probably a 3 million dollar condo now.

PIB was filmed in the mid to late 80's & the film wasn't finished & released till 1990. Livingston edited the final cut down to 78 minutes from over 75 hours of footage, all shot on expensive 16mm film.
