At 21 years of age Lim Sihyeon from Korea set a new World Record at the archery event at the Paris Olympics. Not only did Lim Sihyeon set a new world record she shot a higher point score than all the male archers.
At 19 Nam Suhyeon was questioned why Korea would put her in a World Cup let alone the Olympics at such a young age with little experience. Nam Suyeon shot 688 beating every male archer and setting a new personal best for herself.
Korea's dominance in Archery continutes having the two top places in Men and Women in Archery.
In this video I discuss how little social media exists on these two female stars and I question if these two role models are acknowledged for what they have achieved. I question why archery is not show casing these two women as what is possible and how Women dominated men in what many would consider a strength event.

My wife, brother, sister-in-law, and myself were glued to the TV when the women's archery teams of Korea and China went against each other in the gold medal team competition. It was thrilling. We bought a subscription to Peacock just so we could watch as much of the games as we could. Women's rugby is also a must-see. 70 meters with a recurve - amazing.

To select the players for every competition, Korea holds knock out stage. Open to everyone. 3 people who remain after the competiton have access to the real event. There is no handpicked atheletes. That is why you see some new faces in every competitons. For example, the gold medalist from Tokyo Olympic 2020,she got knocked out by 1 of those you see now. So she cannot be found in Paris Olympic.

Traditionally Koreans were good archers. Their traditional archery is for a sniper, 145m distance from the target. The traditional archery is quite popular. About 250 public traditional archery clubs all over the country. In 1960s, the President said. "Let's try this Western style archery. Why not?" At that time, Korea was a country as pooor as Gabon or Niger. They did not have US dollars to import Western bows and arrows. So they made coarse indigenous substitutes. Who could teach? The traditional archers! Now many countries hire (South) Koreans as a coach or a director. Their trainging method has some grain from the traditional archery. (As a Korean, I am a traditional archer. I love sniper-style shooting from 145 m afar)

World Archery covered her world record, both in writing and in videos. This was amazing. I have been watching Lim all season. She broke on the scene in the Hyundai World Cup, winning not only the first stage in her debut international tournament, but other stages as well. She was really dominant for the whole season. The Korean Archery RU-vid channel has been promoting all of these archer all year. Both Kim Woojin and Brady Ellison are competing in the Olympics as well. They are the Olympic and World rrecords of 700 and 702 respectively. The men qualified in the afternoon. The reporting did say the afternoon had more wind than the morning, when the women qualified.

I think a lot of it also has to do with how Korean athletes are just generally not treated the way other celebrities might be treated. Look at someone like Son Heung-Min. Arguably the best Asian footballer of his time, national team captain, Tottenham captain, Premier League Golden Boot winner, Puskas award winner, etc. Sure, he is absolutely adored here in Korea and he does a ton of product endorsements - but you'd find very little interest ins his personal life. At least, not in the same way as K-Pop or K-Drama stars, who get much more media attention in that area. I could be wrong - I am not Korean, so I'm no expert. But I am a Tottenham fan living in Korea, and this is how I've perceived it. As for the girls getting media coverage here - the Korean Herald has done full English pieces covering their Olympic successes, so you could check that out. And of course everyone is following and watching on TV and discussing on Kakao Chat groups, etc.

There is something you misunderstand. Korean archery appears to be popular at the Olympics, but it is usually of little interest. Archery is not broadcast on any broadcast, and there are 1,900 registered archers, and only about 100 of them belong to professional teams. I have lived in Korea for 30 years, but I have never seen archery in action other than the Olympics.

I am a korean living in Korea. Excellence has a lot to do with extreme hard work backed by technology, science, and rigorous screening and training programs rather than the myth of the tradition and hostory, imo It is a well-known fact that making it to team Korea is way harder than winning a gold medal in an olympics. 200+ excellent archers shoot 20 thousand shots for days to earn a spot in an olympics. Top 3 scorers secure 3 spots in the olympics. There is no seeding for screening process. Doesn't matter whether you won the gold medal or world championship in the past. Everybody starts from the ground zero to get through the olympic selection process. Transparency and integity is the key to screening process. For example, An San, who won 3 gold medals in previous olympics, did not make it to team korea for this Paris olympics. That is the level of competition when it comes to korean achery. That is why we have new and young archers in every olympics and yet still won gold medals for the last 10 olympics. Plus, they have trained with shooting AI that shoots perfect for this olympics. Main sponsor of Korean archery team is Hyundai motors, and they are known for its devoted sponsorship, finacial support, technology, equipment development, etc... What they also focus on is that they train in a situation or location that is similar to olympic location, considering rivers, winds,....plus they put high emphasis on mind control and psychology as a part of the program. Korea women archery team won 10 consecutive gold, which means they never lost a game to anyone for almost 4 decades, given that the game is played as tournaments. It is almost a miracle if you think about it...
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz Месяц назад
You're forgetting something. Most of us across the world don't have access to archery. There is no archery possible within 30km of where i live. A screening of best of the best from 0 people is still 0 people. You have to be very wealthy to participate in archery, just like you have to be independently wealthy to participate in motorsport, horseback etc, it's just not possible. "nothing to do with tradition" you say well where do all the archers come from.

@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz Месяц назад
@@elekow7998 What i'm hinting at is that archery appears to be part of common school curriculum in Korea. Why is it so? What could it be besides tradition - it's widespread because it's been widespread for a while, so facilities and equipment are available. What does tradition mean other than maintaining and developing what's been there already? They say nothing to do with tradition... Whatever sports are part of school in your country, it's likely to do fairly well at that sport as well in overall international competitiveness, as exceptional talent is more likely to emerge and be discovered purely by the mass of numbers, more so than in countries which don't have that sort of foundation. Yacht sailing medallists? Very heavily skewed towards wealthy countries! Almost none come from landlocked countries! Access is the determining prerequisite of success.
@joeywheeler9074

@@joeywheeler9074 Simple targets WHERE. Setting up a 70m target on your premises implies owning at least half a hectare of land, and in a lot of the world you aren't allowed to just go into the nature with sharp arrows and shoot them, you could injure a hiker. You need secured facilities open to the public to train archery.

A few things: 1) I think they all get some recognition in the Sth Korean media. 2) Most of them have a job of archery with companies/councils/universities - so equipment sponsorship is not as important. 3) Their selection process gives no favours to past Olympians / international winners, so if you shoot great in the selection trials you go to the Olympics. 4) My opinion is that 2) and 3) keep Sth Korean archers in Sth Korea. It diminishes the likelihood that an archer would leave the country to try and get citizenship and selection from another country. 5) Didn't An San have a bit of social media presence and she was harassed by "little boys" who couldn't cope with some things she said/her looks/????/ anything and everything that made them scared?

My theory about why these ladies (i.e most Korean archers since I started shooting competitively in 2008) shoot slightly better than men is that the men have too much muscle - it becomes raw strength and high poundages, which i hypothesize leads to less supple and sensitive muscles, or the general sense of one's muscles. I think the women probably shoot several poundages lower than the men, which means that they shoot worse in really windy and wet conditions (though still the best among women overall), but when conditions are decent to great, the bows are perfectly capable at 70m. With lower poundages, they are also probably just more able to feel the shot and set up the shot because they aren't attempting to put so much raw power into the equation/system.

I don't think strenght or endurance has much to do with target shooting in archery: both in indoor and outdoor you shoot at predefined distances (except in 3D and field, but those disciplines aren't olympic), so you don't need much power to release the arrow, only consistency. A couple of years ago the winners at Vegas in both male and female were a 14/15 year old girl (two years in a row) and a 15 years old kid. Both are still highly competitive and did beat everyone. So you don't need to pull 60 pounds, even 20 or 30 are more than enough. This sport is more mentally demanding than physically demanding. You can win in it just with aotomatized kids; you just need to "weaponize autism" (in words of your fellow Austrailian Craig Jones).

Lim Si-Hyeon reminds me of another Olympic female champion, China’s Shan Zhang, a phenomenal Skeet shooter. In the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, Shan Zhang won gold in the Skeet shooting mixed event. Since that time the mixed Skeet shooting discipline has been deleted from the Olympic program and not long after the women’s skeet events. One could infer the men didn’t like it when they were beaten by women. Like Lim she was a very humble champion, a legend of her sport. And in the previous Olympics, there was An San, and before that Chang Hie-Jin..the list goes on.

Historically, Koreans were famous as the world's best archers. Archery is literally the reason this ethnic group survived among neighboring superpowers. Just as Japanese swords were considered the best in East Asia, Korean bows were also regarded same. However, unlike in Japan where swords were a symbol of the ruling class, archery was the core of Korea's unique militia culture and a game enjoyed by all Koreans regardless of class. The tradition continues even today, with many students joining the archery club at South Korean schools. That's why South Korea's archery completely dominated the Olympics Unlike Japanese and Han Chinese bows, Korean bows are classified into the same family as Mongolian and Turkic bows. These bows are made of several layers of different elasticity, and requires more than 50kg of force to pull them. Other agricultural countries created bows with a weaker pulling force to supply to unskilled conscripted soldiers, but Korea had making bows exceptionally strong for an agricultural society due to their unique militia culture. The culture made archery a daily sport for all Koreans, which enabled them to become proficient. In Korea, even when the government fled or collapsed, militias were organized to fight invaders. Historically, Korean Peninsula was envaded by neighboring empires. But commoners continued to resist by organizing militias and hiding in the mountains for guerrilla warfare. So, even the Yuan and Qing dynasties were able to subdue Korean kingdoms and nominally rule over Korean peninsula, this culture made the actual domination and cultural assimilation impossible. This is the secret to the Koreans, a small people group stuck between superpowers, maintaining their identity and not being assimilated for thousands of years. In the Joseon period, all classes such as farmers, scholars, and officials played archery as a daily sports game. According to records from the Joseon Dynasty, many archery ranges were installed in every city in Korea, and in large cities such as Seoul, there were hundreds. In addition, as can be seen from letters and receipts from the Joseon period, civilians enjoyed archery games by betting money like gambling, or by drinking alcohol and having the loser pay for the alcohol. Archery was also a basic skill for scholars, and the archery subject had the highest score in the exam to select military officers during the Joseon Dynasty.

I think with the way that the Korean archery works with top shooters being on corporate teams etc in Korea they don't have to rely so heavily on self promotion like archers from every other country do. Of course the IOC is super strict about using the images etc without a license especially while the games are on. The media companies pay big bucks for Olympic licenses and the IOC is very controlling of who gets to show what. The IOC will DCMA you in a heart beat. Wait till the games finish then I suspect all the big archery companies will come out with promotional material. The only one that seems to be promoting their stuff right now for the Olympics is Ramrods.

You've made a valid point. I completely agree.

Not really valid. They can’t compete at the same level. The men’s qualifying was shot in very high winds vs the women shot in still conditions. When competing at the same time the men out score the women. What Lim and Kim shoot against a shooting machine. And you see the difference in level of skill. Not to say that the Korean women aren’t amazing.

For context, the world record for men’s is 700 in the Olympics and 702 in a World Cup. Those are by Kim Woo-Jin and Brady Ellison respectively. So she’s 6 pts off the Olympic record overall. That’s insane . She’s 21!

Do the women also shoot from 70 meters like the men?

이 양반 뭘 모르시네. 다음 올림픽에 임시현이 못나올수 있어요. 도쿄 올림픽 3관왕인 안산선수가 한국 국가대표에서 탈락하고 임시현이 나온거라구요.

there has been more coverage of the anti-Christian show than all of our top archers. Forget the nationalities, cover our athletes.

They did well and are all great archers, but I was still hoping Korea would be dethroned. I mean 11 Olympic golds in a row !! First time in my Olympic watching life I cheered for China in that final match !! Korean archers are great because it's not just a hobby, it's a way of life for them. They do not even work....just practice archery. They are focused on archery when they are very very young. I read they do not even shoot and arrow or pick up a bow for the first two years. Not sure if that is true, but that level of commitment is pretty hard to beat. Especially in a sport where the margins are paper thin.

I hear that they are well taken care of by the government, houses and stipend and things like that. But, not confirmed
@Been2Tube
@Been2Tube Месяц назад
That is not going to happen until you have a good record in competitions. Government rewards athletes with medals in major events like the Asian Games, Olympic Games, or World Cups. There is no support for housing, stipend, etc. They will receive some pension and there is a cap.
