For many years now advocates and communities around the world have been focussed on Paris School Streets not only because they make streets safer on those blocks for kids but by the swift and ample number of the high quality implementation of them.
In the last 4 years there have been many thousands of social media photos of the school streets in action, presentations by academics & safe streets advocates and even a few video clips and an occasional news report from Paris on them, but there hasn't been anything on the scale of even a short film.
So I set out to change that interviewing some people that could give a good amount of background on Paris School Streets. (And even two folks from the U.S. who frequent Paris I interviewed in NYC on some of our nicer places.) I didn't get everyone I wanted on film, one of my prime interviews came down with Covid(!!). But I hope you enjoy this. It is truly remarkable.

But are our children's safety and education REALLY more important than cars?

Thanks for making this video. I know new york has tried something similar, but the implementation is so different. I really wonder what it will take to get American cities to take car-free living seriously?

NYC has a great open street on 34th Avenue which has six schools along it. It is the closest we have to Paris School Streets but it is doing fairly well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ezPzocuqKPc.html

@@StreetfilmsCommunity Yup, your video is el exactly what I was referring to! But new york has an aversion to fully committing, unlike Paris here, and hopefully one day that will change.

Thanks for your awesome videos and for featuring 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens, throughout this recording and many others. Pedestrianization makes sense and benefits both human and environmental health, especially in cities with relatively good mass transit, like NY, Chicago, Paris, Bogotá, etc. 😊🙌

My hometown of 10,000 is going backwards in this regard. More and more parents dropping their kids off by car, despite max 10 minute bike ride. It's ridiculous, if freakin' Paris can be safe enough to walk to school in, then so can a little town where nothing ever happens.

❤ common sense is the least common of the senses. Paris is showing the right way to transform cities with a lot of common sense and sensibility.

I don't know how many times I've shared this video now, usually in attempts to draw it to the attention of city officials where I live, in Birmingham, UK. Just to know this example is out there, that this is possible, is really helpful in places where we have seen very little movement from total automotive domination of the public space of our streets. Thanks so much for making this!

John, that means the world to me. I have heard from many folks using it out there. And that;s what I want to happen. The video has been slowly chugging along. From 200-500 plays every week no matter what. It might be because I am the only one making videos about School Streets but that's good for me. I think it will have a very long life!

@@StreetfilmsCommunity Wow, thanks for this generous response. I think you're exactly right: rather than a bunch of views for the novelty and that's it, the audience for this should only grow as more and more people see this example and naturally ask "why can't we have that?!?"

Thank you so much Coach. I really think this will either motivate some cities to try it or help boost or further amplify places that have a weak program to further reinforce their efforts towards putting in real barricades or implementations that keep the cars out!!

Your videos about Paris always want to make me move there. Living in Zurich, Switzerland this makes me hopeful. Zurich is still in a really bad spot though even after decades of "trying". Seeing what is possible is such a short time makes me sad when thinking about Zurich but also hopeful that it would be possible and is possible at other places. Guess our system of always having to vote on things and objections makes everything harder and slower.

So beautiful! I grew up in a very safe neighbourhood with lots of playgrounds and fields, and you could walk everywhere. The playground next to our home was a place to connect with our neighbours, and the other walkable places were places to explore. I understand not everyone can have all that, even though I wish it upon everyone, but I'm sure this could already improve those childhoods drastically

It really is truly remarkable. I enjoyed this very much. Thanks! Would love to also be able to hear the reactions and general change in perspectives by those that live in the residential buildings along the school streets. All the benefits expected and unexpected. Also would be fun to hear what all the children think (but understand privacy is an issue). Thanks for another great video and all the work you do 💚

Absolutely inspirational! I want to do this in my city -- Cambridge UK. I am curious about pro-car lobbyists and activists in Paris. Do they exist? Or is public opinion different from the UK? Here this kind of thing is very contentious.

Most of these school streets are located in east and north of Paris. Parisians pro-car are right conservatives who lives in the west so it's fine for them. Rest of pro-car people are suburbians, and since they don't vote for the mayor of Paris, they are just getting ignored.

Actually, there is a massive backlash against Mayor Anne Hidalgo but then it has to be said honestly that she’s completely lunatic, psychorigid and autistic. She’s largely right about soft mobility but on the whole she’s completely nuts and she positively loves antagonizing people. Her character party explains why the pushback against her pedestrianization and bikization of the city is so strong.
