Still weird that there is that city out there that has been hit that hard.

It's not the only one in the US, but one of the at most hard hidden. Detroit does not have the power to free itself there. Actually, the city would have to be directly subordinated to the government in Washington and this would then have to reinvest a lot of money in order to eliminate the dirty corners and settle new jobs there.

I suppose is all I can say.

While just a hobby of sorts, I do take it seriously, and try to utilize new skills and techniques in every video. The Michigan Central Station video is one I am really proud of. The video is not perfect (I left in the shakes and jitters deliberately), but I think it's probably my most personal video. At least in this case, a new development will be going up in place of the ruins. Still, I would have preferred if the hotel could have been saved and rehabilitated.

Drone Girl Thanks! Glad you liked the video. It was thrilling to shoot it. And I have never been to an event where there were so many other drones filming. There were about 6 or 7 other drone pilots recording the event!

TheGadgetGuy1 Really?! Yikes! Were they all there with permission? How did you all handle the airspace? Did you each stick to a certain altitude or similar? Potential nightmare to avoid collisions, esp if the others weren't as experienced. Great video dude, balls of steel. I'd have been sketched out about signal interference, shock waves, down drafts and the dust cloud rearing up and going through the motors. I assume you managed to plan it all out with the dem crew? I'm very jealous that you got to do this!

Ed Winchester Hello Ed. Very good questions. Let's see... As far as I could tell, there was only one 'drone group' that was there with full permission, and they were working with the demolition company. I was working with the Detroit Free Press, but we did not seek permission from the demo company. Some of the pilots I could tell were new and/or amateurs, but some were proficient. While there is a theoretical potential for a collision, it is not very great. The craft are small, and there is a lot of free air space. Personally, I tried to stick to clear altitudes where no one else was around. There isn't really an issue with control signal interference, but there IS a valid concern with video signal interference. With that many drones in the immediate area, I could see a degradation in my video feed, and I'm sure some of the others saw the same issue. It doesn't affect the recorded video quality, but the quality I can see on a live basis, on my monitor. And it can cause problems, because ideally, you would really like to see where you are flying! :) Since this wasn't my first implosion video, I knew from experience what a safe distance and altitude away from the building would be. I saw other drones that were REALLY low once the dust started to fly, and personally, I wouldn't have done that. I'm sure that dust isn't friendly to the motors. Really glad you liked the video! I had granted the Free Press an initial 24 hour exclusive on the video, so I needed to edit it and get it to them very fast. This was the quickest video turnaround I had ever done. It makes me happy that the end results are still positive!!

NCErrorhead Hi. Memory serve, during the actual implosion, I was at about 70-80 meters. For the closeups of the hotel before the implosion, I was obviously much lower. Hope you liked the video!

It's sad, really. The motor industry left the city, which caused most of the population to, as well. The city went bankrupt, and began to fall apart. Now that they're getting back onto their feet, they are having to deal with the fact that over half of their one-beautiful city is now abandoned and falling apart.

They imploded this building to make room for a new arena and new commercial and residential buildings. The developers made a deal with the city where they will refurbish its neighbor.

Coleman Watts And don't forget the stupid elected officials and stupid politicians of Detroit that let the city become to the point where it is now. They are all responsible of letting Detroit get that bad and allowing it to happen! The past 40 years were absolutely miserable. My family was apart of it and had to live through it for a long time until it got so bad that they moved to a different area outside the Detroit area.

MegaMoose1989 Yes I realize why they imploded this hotel but there was a way around it and they could have incorporated both hotels instead of just one. Not everything that the Illetch family has done in Detroit was smart. They have made some stupid mistakes.

Hi Rob. Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad people like the video. It was fun to capture the final moments of the Park Avenue. If you're just getting into FPV, you are really going to enjoy it. Just take your time and hone your skills. What gimbal are you setting up? The best advice I can give is simply practice, practice, practice. In a big open area. You'll learn something new from every flight.

I'm trying to save some cash at this point, so I'm going with the Tarot T-2D gimbal. Having a tough time getting the pan to work right now. Also, wasn't really planning on going fpv, but the more I dig into the hobby, the more I'm realizing that's the only way to go, to know if you're wasting your time or not, as far as the video goes!

Rob Linger Without a doubt, going FPV is the only way to go. It's what allows you to pilot your craft as if you were really sitting inside, seeing exactly what you are filming. Without FPV, you will be severely limited as to what you can do, and even limiting the enjoyment of flying. Once you get more than maybe 40-50 feet away, it is very difficult to maintain proper orientation (which way the drone is pointing), how close you are to other objects, etc. Seriously, the difference is like night and day. Nice thing is, all of the equipment keeps getting cheaper every day. Keep practicing with the gear you have now while slowly acquiring the items needed for FPV. You won't regret it. :)

I learned the limitations this past week while trying to video my daughter and son in law wakeboarding! Lol, not good!

Rob Linger Don't give up. You'll get there. Just be patient and careful. Don't make the stupid mistakes other people do. Otherwise, you'll end up posting one of those "drone crash" videos. :)
