As a retired graphic designer and illustrator, I can only congratulate Heidi on such a superb custom paint job! Awesome work with the rigging wires, too, Adam! And the flying matched the model's attitude exactly. Wunderbar!
Wow Gina thank you! I wasn't aware of what you did...awesome! It is a great flyer...it will make you learn rudder if you can't. I love that you do by the way! A lot of rc pilots don't...
Oh wow! What a breath taking flying work of art. Its a night and day, wholesale departure from that "toy" on the table in the video intro. Amazing! Hope Heidi got fresh flowers every day for a month, after muscling through this one. Maybe even a fancy dinner or two. 😊👍
Thanks Al! Man I love WWI planes and the history of them. Heidi did an amazing job! Brother I can't even articulate how blessed I am to have her as my wife. Pretty amazing we get to create Model AV8R together! Thanks for watching man and glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much! Heidi reads the comments and I surely appreciate her!! Also noticed you subbed to our channel...thanks very much for your support!
@@ModelAV8RChannel Yes Sir! Mrs Heidi is super talented, that's for sure! Any time I get the chance to work with my Daughter or Girlfriend on something it's awesome and since a large portion of my Hobbies cross over with them it makes it even more special.
Team AV8R punchin' the clock!! Great paint work Heidi, looks like a wore out piece of drift wood ;-)!! Great touches everywhere. Nice flight Adam. AirHammer out!!
@@ModelAV8RChannel sometime ago I was thinking of getting the Dynam one but I was put off the idea as they did not seem to fly that well - not like this one ... Nice model,
Martyn the Dynam Albatros is actually a great flyer...not many fly them well though if you get my drift. They have to be balanced well...a lot of folks trying them tail heavy and that doesn't go well with WWI planes. Also they have to be turned using rudder more than aileron...and that isn't something a lot or rc pilots are good at unfortunately...its not a good plane for a "bank n yank" pilot so to speak. All that said...Dynams are very cheaply made and require a lot of modeling to make them right, and a lot of times the electronics are poo...
I have the Great Planes 3 channel that I have had for well over 20 years. It flys very good for just having rudder. The whole plane is the purple and green paint scheme. Having the 280 motor to start with, I converted to 3S brushless and I love that plane more than ever.
Steve! Whats up buddy! Thanks for watching and the kind words...I have a talented wife. It was fun to have a project together. Somebody said they saw you at Perry...I somehow missed you.
@@ModelAV8RChannel ...yep, ...I ran into John LeSeur (?). Got him connected with a friend who was selling off all of her deceased husbands "vintage" RC planes, radios, etc.
Heidi lost me on “burnt sienna “. I am thankful that artistic people that understand that can make our world more beautiful. To make an aircraft into a work of art…..well…gorgeous! Thank you for the video Adam.
Thank you Michael! Yeah I'm as lost on the color wheel as you are buddy! We have a deal that works...I make stuff function, she makes it beautiful. Thanks for watching my friend!
Cliff Harvey gave you and Heidi a shoutout on his recent “Hangar Chat”. He has an interesting channel as well if you are not familiar. I have no affiliation just thought you might want to know.
@@Yankee2003 Thank you Michael. Yep...Cliff's channel is one of my favorites! What a great builder! We share a love of WWI planes, and he is the reason I'll be building my first Micro Aces model soon.
Way to go Heidi, some fantastic detail work!! The finished paint scheme is stunning and the engine and exhaust are a work of art, great rigging job Adam, looks amazing!! And of course great flying, filming and editing!! All in all a very enjoyable and educational video 😀👍
Thanks so much Ian! Heidi is awesome...does all my detail paint work, and I'm grateful as I don't have the talent for it. It really transformed it...fun process and a fun plane to fly!
Beautiful redo on tge Albi, xoar hands down makes the best props. I use them on all my big scale electrics. Amazing job Heidi! The rigging was very creative and you did amazing with it.
Completely enjoyable video my friend! First, you scored big time when you married Heidi! She's a true artist if ever there was one and her mastery of colors and shades is just amazing! The paint job is just spectacular...literally. I really enjoyed your detailed look at the flying wires, and the scale flight was just the icing on the cake! I'm really liking how you go into a real discussion about the use of rudder...a lost art in today's world for sure. So many RC pilots just try to mix that in, and the reality is you can't mix different airspeeds! Or wind conditions for that matter. All in all a very fun viddy...top notch! Looking forward to next week's installment from Team Gault!
Hey John thank you so much man! Yes sir...I hit the jackpot with Heidi. Being artistic is just one of the many things she is awesome at. Such a wonderful woman...an angel really. I'm a grateful, blessed man. Yeah man...rudder skills are not something most of the newer rc pilots coming up today are mastering. Heck man some of the old guard don't use rudder. I know guys that have flown 20 years or more...they still punch n pray on every takeoff, and only use rudder to taxi. It is such a basic skill...every brand new 40 hour private full scale pilot learns how to coordinate turns, slip, skid, etc. I have guys look at me slipping a Cub and think that is magic...lol. Anyway buddy...take care and I'm looking so forward to hanging with you in a couple of months!
Just found your channel, great job, i did a very similar approach on mine 10 years ago. This was one of the best flying planes until my son took me out in a spectacular mid-air dead center of our club runway!
Excellent video. I had this Albatros a while back and it's a great little plane. I subsequently sold it to a friend who, like Heidi, gave it a full repaint. Both my friend and I delight in transforming ARTF warbirds into something on a different level, just and you and Heidi have done here. We also extensively weather them, using reference photos to make sure the effect is just right and not overdone. As you say, it elevates the whole flying experience. You mention differential coming in in the late 30s. I would respectfully point out that the DH82a Tiger Moth had differential from its launch in 1931.The ailerons had approx double the upward movement compared to the downward movement. But it goes even further back…, the DH60 Moth (the Tiggie's predecessor) had differential in 1925! I believe it was de Havilland who actually patented the use of differential, a British invention back in the 20s! Totally agree with your comments on rudder though… I too lead the turn with rudder and continue to use it throughout the turn on all my model biplanes (with differential too of course!). Greetings from the UK. Grahame
Hey Grahame! Man thanks for watching and really glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the history on differential my friend...I did not research it as extensively as I could have. Actually not at all for this video...lol. I have done a ton of research in the past on WWI planes and knew they didn't have it yet, and just went with knowing the J-3 didn't have it in the late 30's. I'm glad to know...and not a bit surprised to find De Havilland invented differential. They made some amazing planes, and the most beautiful airliner ever in the Dragon Rapide (some may argue Concord...good choice too). Thanks for watching Grahame and the valuable info! I really appreciate your comments my friend!
That paint is like art my friend love it. You're a lucke man that have a wife have the scills like that. Even she make the filming . Take care bouth off you. Realy a like your videos. Grettings from Norway😊
First, interesting Aircraft, don't see those a lot comparatively. Great paint scheme, and Heidi's wood grain and engine detail work I think is the crowning Jewel of the model's beautiful scale look and FEEL. Good comments about using rudder; first three years of flying I just used rudder mix with my ailerons and only used left stick for throttle! But then came my first Eflite Maule and I decided to learn to fly more scale and more effectively using no rudder mix and doing it all manually. Also cool what you said about flight enjoyment from working with and personalizing a model; it brings the model to a new level of beauty in appearance and or performance, which is very satisfying and I will say even forms s bit of an extra bond between RC Pilot and Airplane...
Thank you Mark! Very well written comment...you get it buddy. Something about the plane/pilot experience is enhanced when you make yours different from all the others. Heidi's talents never cease to amaze me. She transformed that plane. WWI planes are not the most popular genre for sure, but I love everything about them. I love the history and the result when you get one set up to fly scale, and then use pure flying skills to fly it well. Icing on the cake.
On scratch built models from plans, we just used elastic thread to simulate the flying wires, but these were balsa plywood, and hardwood models covered with silk and painted with Aerogloss Dope. The springs look like they would create a lot of drag.
The springs just make removal easy when you have to invariably tighten the elastic thread when it loosens. The springs are tiny, and worrying about drag on a WWI sesquiplane is like thinking a diet coke will offset the calories in a Big Mac meal, Lol.
Coat the rubber\ elastic rigging with sunscreen to help protect it from UV rays. Even if kept inside sunlight will deteriorate the rubber\ elastic. I really like flying my PZ Albatros. The Mod\ painting looks fantastic, nice flying Adam, Looks amazing, Pipes like rudder, Jeff in LA USA
Hey Jeff thanks man! Nice tip on the sunscreen...we have LED's in the shop just for that (better for covering on balsa and to keep foam from yellowing), and I'm anal about keeping my planes in the shade at the field when not in the air...especially foamys. Got a few WWI's with this type of rigging. Easy and inexpensive! Fun project!
Just found this. Outstanding! Great job and I am eventually going to repaint mine so this is VERY helpful. I've been trying to find a Xoar prop like yours. Assuming its a PJWWI-Scimitar. Stock prop is (as you know) a 10x8. Can't seem to find one that size. Any thoughts where I might look? Heddi did a super job on the faux wood...whew...NICE!!! Congratulations y'all.
Hey Larry! Thanks very much for the kind words! So glad it is helpful. Try Just Model Props. They are out of Florida and carry the full Xoar line...and they have that size in stock. On their website they are listed as "gas two blade WWI Scimitar", but the small sizes are plenty light enough for electrics...I've been using them for years. Good luck with your Albatros and happy flying! Send us some pics at the channel e mail when you do yours!
@@ModelAV8RChannel Thanks so much. I will give them a try. Don't know when I will get to this project, but I WILL :) - BTW also enjoyed your video on the Corsair. VERY nice.
I am sad that I missed this one when it was available from Parkzone. I always thought they picked a rather boring scheme considering how colorful some of the Jastas got with it. Your project really transformed this into a scale looking parkflyer.
I scored one of these recently and put a wood prop on it and a more powerful eflite power 15 motor in it, there’s a bunch of different paint schemes on this plane from what I’ve seen online
Yeah man a lot of people did repaints back when these were new. I was stoked to find one in such great shape... the dude ca'd all the screws in which made the paint work much harder for Heidi, but still stoked! Congrats on getting one!
Hi Adam the wires are cool and will be adding wires to pitts ive found all parts you used. The wires be screwed in plastic apart from conect ing tail feathers to rudder. Don't want dig into feathers if can't help it they be to thin I think. So the jewelry tabs once bent could I just do slit place it in slit tight and then fill slit with foam tac to seal it up and hold it in place would that work or would need to put tabs on wood as you did. Was also good paint work gave me some tips cheers Adam
Hey Lee thanks for watching and glad it was helpful! On the tail I have a good way to do that...watch our FMS Super Cub Greg Miller Edition video. I did tail wires on it. I wouldn't glue the tabs directly in to the foam. Let me know if you like the technique we used in that video. Hope this helps!
Beautiful job. I was lucky enough to buy back a Parkzone Albatros i sold a few years ago. I've been thinking about doing some detail work on mine so now I've got your work as a guide. Thanks so much. Can you give me details of the prop you used?
Thanks for watching and the kind words...fun labor of love! Awesome you have one...great flyers as is the SE5A they made. The prop is a Xoar WWI scimitar 12 x 6. I've watt metered it several times in differing wx conditions and the highest reading I got was 33 amps with it. Not enough over to be an issue really but I programmed a throttle curve limiting full throttle to 94% as I fly it scale so that is still more than I really need. (The esc is a 30 amp btw). I get the props at "Just Model Props". Happy flying!
Very nice….well done !! Heidi could have easily worked in the Albatros factory as a painter in WWI…I’m sure she would have been head of the painting department.
