Parquet Floor Restoration (EPIC TRANSFORMATION)

How To Sand A Floor

This is my epic parquet floor restoration transformation video! You get to see this parquet sanded and finished from start to finish. Before and after and everything in between.
howtosandafloo...
This floor is an Iroko herringbone parquet floor around 50 years old. Iroko is known for having a bad reaction with some finishes as it has salts (calcium) in the grain of the wood.
I start with a rough grit sanding, progress through to fine grits then move to the finishing sander, then filling and then again with the finishing/orbital sanders.
I love this parquet wood flooring! it has such a beautiful colour and grain. It has the iridescent ribbons that can give it such a beautiful 3D appearance.
You may notice that I completely changed direction when sanding with the big machine. This shouldn't be news to those who have read my parquet floor sanding guide. Which can be found here:
howtosandafloor...
I have to apologise for the quality of the video, I will be buying a new camera so I can get 2 shots, both with high-quality cameras.

The saddest part of this, - is the fact that so few people can percieve the difference between your perfectionism & a cowboys substandard effort. BTW - This is an outstanding result, - Best of the best......( from a 20yr. floor sanding vet.)

I got a question to a old head in the business… say your sanding a harring bone floor and you don’t have them trio machines how do you sand them with big machine and not leave them cross cut marks for when they use a stain and not just clear coat?? Jw I been in the business for bout 3 or so years and was jw for the future thanks!!

After you try to refinish a floor yourself once, you will know for sure how to tell a pro job from cowboy’s. You will know it from your own mistakes and from understanding of what is really difficult in this job vs what people _think_ is difficult.

When I do this I use Bona products, so you just have to match the filler color with the type of wood. So if it's a white oak floor then I use Bona Pacific Filler in the white oak color. Then use the Bona sealer and top coat of your choice.

Yes, for your sealer use Bona NaturalSeal. It has a subtle pigment in it to give it the "just sanded" look. Next put on two top coats of Bona Mega One or Bona Traffic HD in the "Extra Matte" sheen level. If it's a commercial job, then you do three top coats.

New subscriber here love your vids ….Q: what grit number sandpapers do you recommend from course to finish? And what finishing emulsion do you recommend? TIA 👍
@CheeseBae
@CheeseBae 6 месяцев назад
The grit you use depends on how badly the floor is damaged. If it's damaged pretty bad, then start a the lowest grit you can find. If it's a new installation, then I typically start with a 36 grit since the boards can sometimes have a "lip" that's higher than its neighbor. If it's an older floor that's not damaged and is already flat, so that you just want to remove the existing finish, then I start at an 80 grit. Wherever you start at, you want to make sure you only skip no more than one grit level. So if you start at 36 grit, then you can skip 40 grit, but you can't skip 60 grit. So the grit pattern looks like 36, then 60, then 100, etc. to the final grit that's recommended on the bottle of the finish you're using. If you're ever in doubt then don't skip the next highest grit level, just go through each one of them. It will take longer, but you're less likely to leave any unsightly scratches or marks in the floor.

furiookami depends on how many layers of paint it’s had, I’ve worked in a school where it had been painted so many times we had to use a special drum cover in blades to cut it away. 1-3 layers; just crack on with the sanding, nice low grit, 24 maybe. Belts may last longer if you only go backwards when removing the paint 👍🏻

I suspect your other video doesn't get as many hits just because it says "How pros create floors like glass" on the thumbnail and high gloss floors have fallen out of fashion somewhat and show scratches more. I'd recommend changing the title and thumbnail to something along the lines of "DIY How to Sand Floors like a Pro" because most people probably don't search for 'refinishing' but rather 'sanding'.

So was helping my aunt about a year ago, I was doing good till I hit a spot that the wood was rotted and not secured and I was getting a drink ... attached cup holder for my beer to sander... and I cut into the floor, the machine started wobbling crazy and the pieces came up, 2 stuck in the wall across the room and 1 went out the new double pane window glass. The beer bottle spilled on the sanded floor part and I let go of the sander to grab it and it started spinning in circles to the cord ripped out of the wall outlet. Between the outlet and the buffer was a gallon of polyurethane gallon can that smacked against the wall and the lid wasn’t on all the way because we opened it to look, as if we knew what we were looking at to begin with but smelled great.... think I was high also from fumes, anyway we have poly on the walls, ceiling and floors.
