Awesome work young man! Your video’s are absolutely wonderful. I have a 292 in my 76 Chevy, needs a ton of work but it’s a lot of money to complete this job. I am now 61 and have never rebuilt an engine, but I’m willing to learn. Thank you for your hard work! And for planting good seeds. I want to thank you for not using fowl language on your videos.! Don’t get me wrong I’m not perfect but I do my best on not using harsh words. Especially around my grandkids. 🙏 God bless

Rebuilt many engines including the 230 250 292 series. Very easy engine to rebuild good beginner. Worst mistake if you don't need to overbore is honing the cylinder too much. Hone them just enough with a hood cross hatch.

The tall deck Chevrolet 292 4.8 litre straight 6 was a super tough motor one of few engines that work well in a 3/4 truck... good video and awesome channel

Had a 66 p30 step van with a 292 in it. The #6 piston busted in half 25 miles from home and I drove it home! The top half would stay at the top of the cylinder for a few minutes then all of a sudden the bottom half of the piston would bang the hell out of it. Got home changed the piston and it ran for two years until I sold it. Really durable, indestructible engine!

Many years ago a buddy on a construction crew bought a truck with a straight 6 and, almost apologetically, told all the guys, “when this six wears out I’m going to slip in a V8”. His father, the wise old foreman of the crew replied, “son, you’re gonna be replacing all the other parts of that truck long before you wear out that engine”.

Did you notice that he didn’t have to get under the truck till he took the flywheel cover off? So much working room it was ridiculous. I had 2 of these and I loved working on them. I overhauled one without removing the engine. Just straddled it with one foot on each frame rail and honed the cylinders. You could do a tune up with plugs points condenser and timing set in less than an hour. Sure miss the simplicity.

Hey did the same steering wheel thing at 3yrs in my dad's home made, roll over cage protected, race car. My first solo at 5yrs was in a Ford 3ton army truck driving around in bull low on the 24volt starter. It would still bowl over 6in dia trees.

If you can and have time to, would you please explain how you can tell externally the difference between the 230, the 250 and 292? I remember that they all look pretty much the same from the outside.
@TheJayhawker
@TheJayhawker 4 года назад
The 230 and 250 look the same, the 292 block is roughly 2" taller because of the extra stroke. The push rod covers on the right hand side of the block on the smaller engines is about 4" tall, on the 292 they are about 6". Thanks for watching!

@@TheJayhawker Also, if the water pump is present, the 292 has a bypass hose, about one inch diameter, connecting it to the water outlet above it. This is not used on the smaller engines.

You can also check the ID number stamped on the flat spot of the block next to the distributor.

Hi love the channel. I have a 64 c20 with 292 and have great compression but want her to have a bit more punch. Any suggestions how to add cheap hp?what would head machine specs be? Thanks!
@TheJayhawker
@TheJayhawker 2 года назад
There is a lot you can do to these old inliners but I'm not sure I would call any of it cheap. There is a "lump port" kit out there that creates better head flow but from what I have read it is better to install larger valves, cam, etc, etc. You can do a turbo, EFI, or a 2 or 4 bbl carb. Aftermarket intakes have been around forever for these things and the "cheapest" and simplest upgrade may be a 2 or 4 bbl intake and a carb to match.

If yours is a straight 6 with a floor shift manual like this one, all you should have is the throttle linkage. Is that what you need a pic of?

Are those custom bolts that you used to pull the motor? if not do you know where I can purchase some?
@TheJayhawker
@TheJayhawker 3 года назад
Go to your hardware store and look for eye bolts with 1/2" thread. I actually ended up cutting about 3" of thread off of mine because they didn't need to be as long as they were. I also tack welded the ends of the rod at the eye so that it wouldn't spread open when lifting that much weight. So I guess they are purchased and then customized.

WHY NOT STEAM OR POWER WASH THE MOTOR BEFORE YOU TAKE IT ALL APART ?
@1575murray
@1575murray 2 года назад
That would have been a good idea. It makes the fasteners easier to find and there is less risk of getting dirt into places it doesn't belong. This engine looks like it has been in service for a very long time and will benefit from a rebuilding. Not everyone needs a big V8 engine especially for short trip use.

Good video, But very dangerous to pull engine with crane truck running in your garage. Carbon Monoxide builds up fast. It doesn't matter that the garage doors are open. I'll use my cheery picker.

GM Put these engines in some very large trucks, lots of UPS trucks had them!
@prevost8686
@prevost8686 3 года назад
Yes they did. They also used many Ford 300 sixes in them . The Ford 300 was used in trucks as large as the F-600. I love the 292, 300, and the Slant 6. I’ve never been fortunate enough to have a 292 but I did own a 300 in a 3/4 ton work truck. It was a real pulling machine and I regret selling it. I’d love to do a full restoration on an old work truck with a six in it.
