Very detailed video! Thank you for this.. been using that 5100 crank for about a couple of years now without issues. Was planning to upgrade to the 7100 slx cranks but keep my 11spd 5100rd and m8000 shifter. Didn't realize that slx 12 spd chainring might have problems if I used it with the 11spd rd/cogs.

I'm brand new to "upgrading/servicing etc" a few weeks ago I spoke to someone at Sheffield Decathlon who worked at the bikeshop and he information bombed me when I was looking for a new suntour crankset as my pedal had fell off and couldn't find any online as I thought I needed the exact same one, he explained so many options and showed me examples of what people used for trail riding and the huge cassettes which I didn't know was a thing etc. So when i got home i researched.. alot. My voodoo hoodoo was a 3x9 shimano alivio groupset but now i run a 1x11s (11-51t) deore m5100 groupset, 32teeth 175mm crankset using a bb52 bottom bracket, a 150mm dropper seat I internally routed by drilling my frame once, new brake pads and I bled my own brakes and fitted the groupset.. I also replaced my freehub as that had massive play. I replaced both bearings and bearing cups in my headset along with the crown race and opted for new sealed bearings and better cups.. isn't the Internet a wonderful place for newbies like me to do everything! Last month I thought a bike was a bike. Now I feel like I know so much! Haha. Hardest part was the rear derailleur adjustment BUT I recently bought a bike stand for £30 and it took me 1 try to dial it in today, having to either flip the bike over or lift the bike to pedal it to adjust a derailleur is so hard as a newbie. Thanks for reading, I felt like sharing haha.

I've been running Shimano M5100 groupset for about 1 year now. No problems. Just wish Shimano did not abandon non-boost chain lines. I was able to reduce chain line from 52mm to 49.5mm by swapping one 2.5mm bb spacer to non-drive side. I have also used chainring spacers with longer 16mm chainring bolts to reduce chain line. I recently purchased SRAM SX DUB crankset for another budget build that I plan to pair with M5100 cassette/Derailleur. Honestly the SRAM SX DUB crank is little lighter than the M5100 crank, has direct mount chainring and offered in chainrings offsets for non-boost (49mm) and boost (52mm). Seems like SRAM did their homework with the DUB system. Hopefully the 28.99 aluminum spindle holds up as well as Shimano's 24mm steel spindle.

Great pickup about old 135mm and 142mm through axle non-boost chainlines. I've found the cheapest option for a correct chainline, is to find an old 3x (NOT 2x) shimano crank from the 9 speed or 10 speed days with 104BCD. Then install a wolftooth etc narrow/wide chainring on the middle mount. This gives a perfect 49mm chainline. You can buy both 10/11 or 12 speed chainring options in alloy and steel from wolftooth or others.

Starting from SLX Shimano provides stainless steel bolts in many of their parts, which is another bonus when spending bit more. Especially as you do need to service cranks, thus using crank arm bolts on regular basis. Same goes in rear derailleur, where small allen key needs nice, u corroded allen head, not to strip it. Although adjustment doesn't require much torque

Engineering and materials science does not lie. I like an all steel 11 speed rear cluster and front chainring or chainrings they last very well. The great thing about the M5100 is it was designed for a single and double front chainring. The M5100 rear derailleur has jockey wheels that can be upgraded to XTR bearing jockey wheels and also has a clutch. The latest Deore equipment has all bases covered for reliable long lasting performance.... The move to 12 speed has not been well liked by many people for good reason. The 10 to 51 rear cluster holds no interest for me. Once you start using exotic and light weight materials and make things thinner and much lighter the life of the drivetrain is reduced which is okay if you replace parts all the time. But for the normal rider a half a kg weight reduction in not relavent but a reliable long life is.....

(i.e. 49.0 +/- 0.1 mm) I have a calibrated Mitutoyo caliber but the result of the mesurement is influenced by the alignment of caliber, error and uncertainment from the calibration certificade and assuming that the hole under the frame is the middle line. This is mostly an issue with Ultegra and Dura-drace drive side cranks and mostly the new series, because the integrated spider is also hollow on those, it never happens with 105 or Tiagra. MTB cranks are stronger and have a separate spider/DM . It does suck that Shimano seem to be kind of brushing off the issue with the new road cranks as "rare occurrences" though.
