Having the tire mounted against the recommended direction of rotation may cause faster tire wear and it changes how the tire moves dirt, rocks and water you may be riding over that could be a potential safety hazard.
I have Maxxis Minion DHF's on the front and rear wheels of my 2021 Rocky Mountain Slayer. Found them on sale for $54/ea. at REI one day. I accidently mounted the front tire against the recommended direction of rotation, but thought I'd ride on it and see if there were any issues and I quickly found there to be a few.
(New Noises and Projectiles) First I noticed at lower speeds rocks seemed to be lobbing up into the chain area and the rear wheels spokes all sorts of new noises and at high speed rocks were zinging straight up past my field of vision and really smashing into the frame loudly.
(Rapid Unusual Wear) After only a few rides the L shaped blocks on the outer wall were getting shredded up, I'd guess because top of the L shaped block is the weaker part of the construction was taking the abuse vs. the bottom which is the bigger?
(Water Channeling) I haven't ridden this set up in the rain or mud yet, but I'd guess the water and mud would not clear the tire properly and would be channeled right up into the frame and onto the rider.
