This Abandoned Asylum for the Criminally Insane in New York is on the grounds of an active prison and the property is peppered with active buildings mixed in with many very old derelict and crumbling abandoned buildings.
Many of the patients admitted to this now abandoned insane asylum died there and were buried in graves marked not with names, but by numbers. In 2012 I took a day long road trip with this abandoned asylum on my list of places to visit. I had no idea what to expect when I got here or what to look for once I made the over 4 hour drive.
This abandoned asylum, which opened in the last quarter of the 1800’s was setup to provide better treatment for those who were unable to care for them self.
Rather than being locked away in squalid conditions in an almshouse, this facility promised better care for those who could not “fit in” to every day society. Like all asylums, significant budget cuts lead to overcrowding & deplorable treatment of patients. Then, after a expose in the 1970’s by Geraldo Riveria, the wheels were set in motion to start the closing of this & all other facilities.
Today this particular building along with several on the grounds have been left to rot with significant structural damage. Although the history of this place is quite sad, the building itself was at one time quite beautiful & it’s sad that is now beyond repair.

I grew up on the grounds of Willard. My dad was a doctor and he did his residency there. I still remember the mental patients and the bars on the windows. It sends shivers down my spine.

I worked there and was a patient there 9months after starting to hear voices and running away. 35years ago. I lived as normal life of a life after. I still take medicine. I had shock treatments there. I graduated from college in 2004.

Thank you so much for exploring this place for us. I really appreciate the work you do. And look of this place is fantastic. It's one of the cooler abandoned asylums that I've watched. Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to the next part.

That’s so cool, thanks for sharing! I would love to visit this place myself. It’s about a 2 hours drive. My one question: is it hard to get into it or did you have permission? Looks so cool but so many of those old places are on security and fenced up.

Happy i found your channel man, been recently been exploring around ottawa and now love the hobby of exploring the past through ruins and abandoned places. I was wondering if you have a playlist of vids which are strictly ontario based or even better Ottawa area based. Hope to hear back but either keep up the amazing work!

Chronic does not mean dangerous. Many were lock up because people did not like to admit that mental illness existed. They were sent away and many times forgotten.

[note to wannabe explorers: this place is patrolled, fenced, n today is in worse sketchier condition than seen here. They will arrest and prosecute you for trespassing. There is an operating state prison on the property.

4:30 : an Extension Ladder already in place, leading right up to the prize pinnacle Cupola - n you do not climb or even Mention it! - then claim that you've conquered the Most Dangerous part of the building! Wth?! Bogus! The Cupola is the Grand Prize, n there was miraculously a Ladder right frkn there! At least don't pretend to us that you weren't too scared to climb it. Anyways sorry to rag: I respect yr work, thank you for sharing it, and your photographs are beautiful.
