You can reach my guest, Solomon Gitau Kilanga on +254715874094
Through his heart-rending story, Solomon takes us on a journey through the twists and turns of a privileged but confusing upbringing, his "harmless experiments" with alcohol as a teenager, and his eventual addiction. Denial and blame games that followed eventually rendered him homeless.
Find his book, " CHOKORA" in Nairobi town at Former Ebrahim mall first-floor shop f1.
It's along Moi Avenue, opposite Imenti house.

Man! This is such a sobering conversation. Everyone knows an alcoholic. At this rate, I feel like we all have an alcoholic in the family. In our generation, we have lots of functional alcoholics even in our workplaces. It’s scary to know how the scales can tip with addition of some life pressure and a person becomes completely redundant and dependent on alcohol. The perspective of male homelessness is also heartbreaking…and absolutely true. How many times have I even said to myself: Why is a completely healthy man out on the streets begging when he could be doing something to earn a living. I have said this from my point of privilege without seeing just how homelessness completely diminishes a person and breaks them down to almost nothing. How if they cannot even get documents like IDs, they are pretty much screwed before they even start. Gitau, your story is so powerful. There is a reason you lived to tell the tale. Especially now that we can see how men live with traumas that they never share, as society keeps heaping expectations on them without a safe space to decompress because they were taught to “jikaza kimwanaume”. I am also praying for my own loved ones who are on the path of self destruction from alcohol addiction ♥️

@Di Kajigi we're all guilty when it comes to that statement... "Why is a completely healthy man out on the streets begging when he could be doing something to earn a living." So much to learn from this story. Solomon God is using you to change the world in many ways you might not know

Another great story. The other side of the penny that has not been spoken about, the owners of those lodgings and those cheap bars, who are themselves very rich, but suffer a whole host of other problems. Life style diseases, s.t.i, rebellious and lost offspring etc etc and the irony is that their offspring become the next generation of users and not owners of those establishments. And offspring of reformed users become the next generation of owners, a reversal of roles as it were. The irony, the irony, the irony. And the arrow of time continues to fly ever forwards and all that remains are the names of ancestors echoing down the generations.

Everything happens for a reason. If this man never went down this route we would not have had someone to humanize street people to us, someone like us, who wasn't an orphan or an abused runaway who fell through the cracks. He could be any of us and tomorrow when we see a street person we will remember this guy who really is just like any of us, we dehumanise street people so much. He has helped us have more compassion and understanding for them. Wherever they may be in their struggle with addiction they are still human beings just like the rest of us. Thanks for helping us understand and relate to addicts and street people , I have learnt a lot from you.

I can totally relate to the fact that teenagers get lost... My parents used to wonder why I changed so much from the 'good girl' they had yet they had given me everything I needed. But what they don't understand is that sometimes the influences and peer pressure may get to us, so that we can get validation from people at times or for the hype and we don't know any better. We don't know this until we become older and realize the mistakes we did. One thing that I've promised myself is to guide my child and support and guide him especially emotionally and mentally. Because sometimes it's not the child... It's that he's lost. Thank you for the inspiring story.

Well put. Spoken as a true insider. This will help anyone struggling with alcohol use disorders. The abusers , the dependents, etc. SELF ESTEEM needs to be built from a young age. God bless you as you carry this message far and wide

I do not blame your parents per se ,but I think as a parent we MUST always be snoopy on what our children do........because this money we chase and abscond our parental duties in upbringing our children. And thanks for sharing your story.

The prodigal son had a brother equally raised in the same environment by loving parents, but yet he still strayed away from home. Parents could have done all but it sitll happens.
