This is a basic tute on MOTIF (but similar to other master controller keyboards) set up for MIDI to read into MIDI application (CUBASE/GARAGEBAND/LOGIC) via USB, local control settings needed and beginning patch assignments related to parts and corresponding MIDI tracks in software.

Broooo, you are such a life saver. I have some big stage gigs coming up next year, and now I can smoothly change my patch for the setlist. This piano was definitely wayyy aheadd of it's time back thenn.

Thank you man! I've been trying to get my motif es6 usb midi working for months (with Logic). You got me to the general area on the motif. I just had to scroll thru a few screens to find anything that said Midi so that I could select it to USB. That did the trick. Thanks!

Hey thank you so much for posting this tutorial Vid. I recently picked up a MO6 which seems to pretty much work exactly like a Motif and I have learned that the Yamaha Manuals are about worthless. After a couple hours of going no where, I got up and running right away with your Vid. Thanks again!

Thanks for your reply. But I guess I explained it the wrong way. I can use the sounds from logic, and use it as a midi board. But what i want is to record the sounds of my mo6 in to logic. When i put the local control off, I record the midi assignment in logic, and my board plays the sound. so it works like an external sequencer. But do you know if it is possible to record the sounds of my board into logic

years ago bought my ES7 Motif,, today I'm trying to set it up with my new Mac studio. Local control off and signals are going through but 'only' note data, samples play but simple sustain pedal function does not work. Is there anything else within the ES 7 that I can do to transmit this essential function to my Logic Pro on my Mac?

What version are you using? I thought it was the ES8 but I just noticed your "Mode" section is different.

If you have Garageband library or other 3rd party soft synths plug-in source to draw from, you'll be good to go.. You need to set up a what instrument you want to source when you make a track. However you get the MIDI file created, you can source whatever sound library instrument you have available inside the computer. Click on track "setting" and you should see a source link to Garageband at least.

sorry for the delay. Just found this. I'd say set your midi tracks in GB to match that of your set up in the Motif seq mixer mode, make sure both BPM match and tempo, enable record on GB, then hit record - while tape heads moving, start the sequence in the Motif. Isn't there an export feature from the Motif that allows you to export SMF ? GB may be a little limited in this context.

System configurations have gotten fairly consistent for sometime. So i'd think your utilities features, or like system configuration settings, should have some cross over likeness to what you get on the Motif 8, but can't be sure. There are many general midi tutes on YT for just getting started with how it works, in general. Gots to be patient.

otherwise - it's time consuming doing this in real time since you have to mute out all other tracks so they dont bleed. and then hopefully the stems line up. but you can edit that.

in real time i guess. i'd usually save that for the final mix and mix via mixer to another external source. but you should be able to take the mono or stereo outs from keys to digital audio interface, create live instrument track(s) and bring them back in there in real time. if you have any soft synths and hopefully comparable instrument samples, you cd just convert midi to audio files and reprint them using the soft synth instrument you choose..

i have my motif6 "classic" running thru protools 8 via an edirol um1-ex midi interface. when i use it with the edirol or with a standard usb cable to track midi or audio, it doesnt sync properly. idk if its latency or if i dont have something set correctly.

Tried that yesterday but wasn't working , the mac wasn't showing that I connected any new drive so problem is somewhere .

Do you have to own Cubase for this setup to work? I'm running Windows 7 and trying to interface with a Motif XF8. If Cubase is needed, can I use the least expensive one, Steinberg Cubase Elements 7 DAW Software Educational Edition?

thanks for the comment DB... No.. These configurations and concepts are not Cubase specific. Your platform should have similar interface features. This vid was to feature general Motif set up and understanding channels, getting the device to talk to software.

I'm not familiar with Midiculous, but I presume you connected the Mo via USB. In my vid I explain one has to get out of "performance mode," which is what one uses when live and stage and put the MO local mode "off," (see: 03.53) to have it speak to your corresponding MIDI channels and whatever instrument patches ( you may have set up for any one of your 16 MIDI channels. It's my impression your instrument and performance libraries in the Mo are appreciably much better than what a free MIDI download app is going to bring you. If you prefer to use the Midiculous patches, you'll simply have to make sure whatever channel you have selected that is "engaged" is sending MIDI to the corresponding same channel on your software app. If you need further help, please sign up/register over at www.catfishfridaymusic.com and I'll get you going. ; ). Shouldn't take more than 30 mins. But take some time with my short vids, writer down questions and I'll look forward to being of service to you, if you need help.

Hi, i got a question can you plz help me out? I can sequence my mo6 in logic now (thanks!), but the sounds still come from my mo6. I want them go into logic, so i can use the sounds in there and make a song out of it. Is that possible?

So I have a Motif 8 and I use Studio One Artist 2 how can I connect it to use this DAW I also have a Presonus USB Audio Box is there any info for setting these up to work together any info will help thanks

I have the exact same question. I followed the Studio One Artist 2 instructions which tell you to download the midi driver for the Motif 8. I went to the Yamaha website to download the driver onto my Windows 8.1 64 bit computer. But the driver did not download. I'm stuck and don't know how to proceed.

You have to have the Motif hooked up to your computer with the USB cable so the computer can ID the keyboard then you can download the latest driver..however it still doesn't ID Studio One so I have to get a different DAW that it will ..Sonar Cubase Logic and Pro Tools are the ones it does support hope that helps

Rob Winfield Rob.. Sorry for the delay in this. hopefully - you shouldn't have to buy new software. there could be a plugin/extension conflict between hardware you mentioned, audio box and computer. try just using just the Motif without the other, and see if your software registers activity connection, sounds output when selecting Motif as your master controller.

catfishfridaymusic So the great secret to get the Yamaha Motif to work with Studio One is you need all updates for the Motif and if it isn't communicating with your computer just factory reset the Motif 8 I now have my Motif to play and write with Studio One and Garriton Personal Orchestra 4 thanks for the advice.

Can someone help me with re-setting the Motif 8 so I can record individual Midi tracks into Digital Performer? I pushed a number of buttons located below the word "sequencer" and as a result I messed up my settings. When entering an instrument from the banks of sounds on the Motif 8, all tracks now list the same instrument.

***** Thank you for posting HB. When working with an external DAW, they usually instinctively know you are a talking to a particular MIDI channel, being that you are talking/writing to that channel. If it is set to input/record. Is your MIDI showing up as receiving msgs via your console. It may be an output prob with your USB connect or otherwise.

Hey can you help me out. I'm trying to Midi up my Motif ES7 To Protools 10. Trying to take it back old school. I'm not trying to use the Midi Instruments within Protools Software. It takes up to much CPU Power. Question do I have to do the old hook up? running midi in to midi out- Midi out to Midi in? or can we use the USB going direct into Protools? USING MACBOOK OXS NOTE IM NOT TALKING ABOUT MIDI INSTRUMENTS I GOT THAT PART.

Thanks Gat. PT 10 should see USB Motif instrument in your PT MIDI set up. So you are using/reading Motif sounds live till final?
