Abundant in we areas: would you recognize this plant. While the word "Cabbage" is in its name because of its large cabbage-like leaves, DO NOT EAT THIS PLANT! Skunk Cabbage, Symplocarpus foetidus, is very TOXIC!
This is an amazing "thermogenic" plant that can actually melt its way through snow when it flowers early in the spring!
Check out my companion episodes on Skunk Cabbage for more surprising details about its biology!

Fascinating ! What a remarkable plant. I know we have it here in Manitoba. I'm guessing it grows in most of North America.

It is mostly a northern plant...it follows the spine of the Appalachians south..pushed their after glaciers and remains in cool pockets at elevation.

That sounds like a Louisiana Waterthrush. I didn't know they were all the way up there. Good video, new subscriber.

Every time I see a Skunk Cabbage Flower I can't help thinking that it's from another planet, it's a weird plant for sure.
