In this 2-part Abstract Painting video series, I'm specifically focused on finding a balance between quiet, low contrast spaces and loud, high contrast spaces.
********
In this video (Part 1 of 2), I create freely in order to produce bold, interesting marks throughout several layers of paint and collage on a 24"x18" piece of paper.
In Part 2 ( • Part 2: Quiet vs. Loud... ), I cut the painting I created into 4, 9"x12" sheets of paper and continue to add collage and paint as separate paintings. I struggle to find my way for a while (and dig myself into an ugly hole!) but ultimately end up in a good place with these.
Materials used: acrylic/mixed media paper, acrylic paint, graphite, color shaper, Caran d'ache Neocolor crayons, and collage.

Love your honest comments. We need to know you get frustrated too. ❤️

Oh yes, the frustration and feeling lost is very real for everyone who creates. It’s part of the fun of it (not that it feels fun to feel lost, but artists are explorers by nature and the challenge of problem solving to work our way out of it is so rewarding)! ❤️❤️❤️

Inspiring as always to watch you work Jackie ❤ When you were saying 'maybe I'm just a person who makes busier paintings' I thought of a bit of wisdom I heard from Pema Chodron (wonderful meditation teacher) who kept thinking meditation was going to calm her mind and finally realizing it was instead going to help her come to terms with the busy mind she had :)

Thank you! ❤️ I love that she came to terms with her busy mind - I think that might help me come to terms with my busy art! 😆❤️❤️❤️

Thank you Jackie! Like you I get so attached to marks/areas and make more of a mess by trying to protect them. The more attached I get the messier everything gets. It is all about allowing it to happen. You inspire me to dig out old stuff that’s awful and rework it. I love the Pema Chodron comment, very well remembered, I’d forgotten it.

It’s so true that things get messier the more I try to protect the precious parts! 🙄😆 Yes, go dust off the old work and get some fresh paint on it! 🌈

Also VeRy hard for me to quiet things-I like my color pops but sometimes hard to determine focal point when I let color and contrast win. Love me some black and white-too much! But a soothing place for your eyes to rest is necessary

I feel you on all of this. I love the quiet spaces and it’s such a challenge to figure out what to cover up in order to make them ❤️

i am having a bit of pavlovs dog with the music. love it! what was the brush (?) you used for putting on the white just past the beginning? also.....dont be shy of real time! i love it when people use real time editing. less of a frantic pace and more authentic. great work, cant wait for the next one!

I’ve been thinking about how to best handle a looooooong video in real time. Most music is only a few minutes so if I’m working for 45-60 minutes, either there would be long periods of silence or the same song repeated 30 times (and I’ve received comments that others haven’t liked the music on repeat so 🤷‍♀️😂). If I just left my own music on in the house, I think RU-vid might flag me for copyright issues 😬 If you had to choose, would you rather have me rambling on and some silence or to have longer periods of silence? ❤️

Is the brush you asked about the one with grey “bristles”? If so, it’s my color shaper - the “bristles” are actually a wedge of silicone.
@jaynedough130
@jaynedough130 2 года назад
not the colour shaper used to put on the black lines but just after that you put on white paint. is it a dish washing brush? going to try that for sure.

Oooooooh, right - that is a rigid brush intended to clean grout between tiles! There are always creative uses for tools, right? 😂😂😂

Love this! Can I please ask what did you use to make the white marks, Time stamp 4:52, I couldn’t quite tell If it was some sort of pencil? Also what glue did you use to paste down the collage pieces ? Thank you much. I love your work!
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
Hi Les! Thanks so much for watching ❤️ The white marks were made with a China marker (I believe it’s also called a grease pencil, which makes more sense) - thanks for the time stamp as a reference point! I use gloss medium to glue everything down. ❤️❤️❤️

I truly enjoy your process and the flow. I wanted to ask you about the white paint you use. . What brand is it? have different white tubes and they are or too opaque or too translucent, so I am looking for something like this. Thanks! By the way, I used my mini gel press plate and rubber bands after watching one of your videos and the results are so cool! You inspire me every time.

I’m so glad to hear you were inspired to try some new techniques after watching one of my videos, Theo! You just made my day ☺️❤️ I used Nova Color titanium white in this video. They sell directly to artists so they are less expensive than other paint brands and they are highly pigmented colors so you don’t have to sacrifice quality! I don’t get paid for mentioning them, I just use their paints a lot 🤗

@@jackieschomburgart thanks a lot Jackie, 😍I will check my online suppliers i to find it, I just love this white acrylic. I love your style and process. I paint and collage, so aint't an artist myself, but I create some art sometimes. I find inspiring that you go through the mess and chaos and then rework it and it ends so deep and interesting. I tend to put my messy papers in the rubbish instead of reworking them But I work on A4 or paper, so it is not a biggie. I will try to rework the mess next time and see what it happens

I say anyone who creates and makes art is an artist, so you qualify as an artist too ☺️ Here’s the website for Nova Color - you can only buy the paint directly from them: novacolorpaint.com/collections/acrylic-paint

May I ask, what kind/ brand of white are you using in the quieting down parts? Thanks

It was either Nova color paint titanium white or Golden heavy body titanium white - I usually say in the videos ☺️

Great start. I have to ask, how do you get the black rubber band marks on the white tissue paper. It’s driving me nuts as I usually can think it out. lol Thank you.

I’ll have to go back and look at the video to see the marks you’re asking about to see if I remember how I made them 😂😂😂
@janswimwild
@janswimwild 2 года назад
If I remember correctly from a previous video on making collage papers you lay the rubber bands down on the tissue paper and gel print over them? And then do a reverse print?

Do you ever rotate your substrate?
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 11 месяцев назад
Yes I do. For some reason, when I work on a two page spread in my sketchbook, I rotate it less often than when the pieces are stand alone papers/canvases.

what is acrylic ink> is that the same as india ink?
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
It’s not the same as India ink. It has an acrylic base of some kind - feels and moves like ink, but when it dries it’s permanent and doesn’t bleed into the layers on top of it.
